Chapter 13: 13. Class Assignment
Dining together that afternoon, the atmosphere suddenly grew tense after Odel's unexpected question. Her three fiancés were rendered speechless, their faces stiff as if struggling to find the right response.
"Why would you ask something like that during a meal? " Just finish your food," Daffin said with a faint smile, attempting to change the subject.
"No!" Odel snapped, her sharp gaze fixed on Daffin. "I've been thinking about this for a long time. I need to know! I don't even know which ancestor of mine trapped me in this agreement. If I keep it bottled up, I'll go insane!"
Clayton let out a deep sigh, stirring the spaghetti on his plate, choosing to remain silent. Daffin and Emilio exchanged glances before Daffin cautiously spoke up.
"Alright, Odel. " One of your ancestors was a witch," Daffin began softly. "She stole an heirloom crystal from the vampires and... swallowed it to gain certain magical powers."
Odel's eyes widened. "What? A witch? An heirloom crystal?"
Daffin continued, "The crystal's power flowed through her bloodline and was passed down to her descendants. While the gene is usually recessive, there's a rare moment when the crystal's full power manifests. " It happens in the seventh generation, marked by a unique sign, like the crystal flower mark on your neck."
Hearing this, Odel instinctively touched the back of her neck, gently running her fingers over the crystal flower mark she had always thought was a blessing. "So... this is actually a curse?" she murmured, her voice barely audible.
She shot a sharp glare at Daffin, folding her arms in frustration. "Then tell me—what happens if I marry one of you? Will I turn into a vampire? Or a witch again? Explain!"
Daffin glanced at Emilio, silently pleading for help. Emilio, however, looked at Clayton, who promptly rose from his chair.
"I'm going to wash the dishes," Clayton muttered, quickly jogging to the kitchen.
Not wanting to be left behind, Daffin and Emilio also stood up, each grabbing their plates. "Me too. " I'm washing the dishes," they said almost simultaneously, hurrying after Clayton.
"You're all running away from me?!" Odel yelled, chasing after them. But within seconds, the three men transformed into black mist, floating toward the kitchen to set down their plates before retreating to their rooms. The sound of doors locking echoed in succession.
"You three are so annoying!" Odel shouted angrily. "Don't expect me to choose any of you!" Fuming, she stormed into her room and slammed the door shut.
That night, Odel locked herself in her room and refused to speak to anyone. Even the next morning, she left for campus without allowing any of her fiancés to escort her.
"If you want to get close to me, you'd better answer all my questions!" she warned before walking out.
The threat worked. Throughout the day, Clayton, Daffin, and Emilio kept their distance, only watching Odel from afar. In sociology class, Odel finally enjoyed some peace, free from their presence by her side.
Fiona, one of her classmates and close friends, approached her with a curious expression.
"Why are you sitting alone? " Usually, you're always surrounded by those three handsome guys," Fiona teased with a playful smile.
"They're my cousins," Odel replied curtly, trying to sound casual.
"Cousins? I thought they were your fiancés. " The gossip about you four has spread everywhere," Fiona chuckled. "Aren't they a little too close for cousins?"
"Ah, they just like to joke around. " Don't mind them," Odel said, trying to change the subject, feeling uneasy discussing this in the middle of a human environment.
But deep down, Odel knew the secret was becoming harder to hide. Three vampire fiancés and an ancient pact weren't exactly easy to explain, especially amidst her normal life as a university student.
That day in sociology class, the atmosphere was lively. The professor had just announced a group project, and the students began enthusiastically choosing their teammates. However, most of the girls' attention was drawn to the three handsome men sitting in the back row—Clayton, Daffin, and Emilio.
One female student walked up to them and asked shyly, "Can I be in your group, Emilio?"
"Why? " I don't even understand the material," Emilio replied bluntly.
"I'll teach you," the girl said, trying to charm him.
Clayton, on the other hand, was surrounded by a group of girls begging him to join their group. With a cold expression, he immediately shut them down.
"I don't want to. " I'll group up with Daffin and Emilio," he stated firmly.
Meanwhile, Daffin covered his ears, unwilling to listen to the surrounding commotion.
Odel, noticing the chaos, could only sigh.
"Why are they acting like that? " They're so annoying," she muttered quietly, loud enough for Fiona to hear.
"Because they're incredibly handsome—perfectly mysterious," Fiona replied, giggling.
"You're right, but it's way too much," Odel said.
"Yeah, it's over the top. Sometimes being too perfect isn't appealing. " I prefer someone more realistic," Fiona commented.
Odel's attention shifted when the professor called her name.
"Odel, do you already have a group?"
"It's just me and Fiona, Sir," she replied.
"Only two students? " If your group isn't complete, you should invite Adrian," the professor suggested.
Odel turned, startled. Adrian? The name sounded familiar. She glanced toward the corner of the classroom, where a tall man with glasses sat casually. Adrian, an upperclassman she'd met before in the library, nodded at her nonchalantly.
"Adrian? " Is he retaking this class?" Odel wondered to herself.
Meanwhile, Fiona stared at Adrian curiously. "Wow, that Adrian! " Take him, Odel! " He's famous for being smart and serious," Fiona whispered eagerly.
Hearing Fiona's suggestion, Odel agreed to the professor's proposal. After all, she already knew him, and he seemed friendly enough.
After class, Adrian approached her.
"So, we're in the same group. " You can pick any topic you like—I'm flexible," Adrian said.
Odel glanced at Fiona, whose face lit up as she immediately introduced herself.
"I'm Fiona, and this is Odel. " Aren't you the guy who was chosen as Student of the Year?" Fiona asked excitedly.
"Yes, though it's not something I asked for," Adrian replied casually.
"Wow, so you really are that Adrian! " That's so cool, but why are you retaking Intro to Sociology?" Fiona asked curiously.
"I was sick and missed a lot of classes, so I have to retake it this year," Adrian replied.
"That makes sense!" Fiona nodded in understanding.
Adrian glanced at Odel and smiled. "We meet again, Odel. " It's nice to be in the same class as you."
"Yeah, I'm glad we're in the same group. " We'll get to discuss things more," Odel replied.
"Wow, you two already know each other? " That's great!" Fiona chimed in.
The three of them chatted warmly, and Odel even flashed a sweet smile while talking to Adrian—a smile and laughter her three fiancés had never seen directed at them.
From afar, three pairs of eyes watched the scene with jealousy. The three vampires observed with unreadable expressions: Clayton crossed his arms, Daffin furrowed his brow, and Emilio let out a quiet sigh.
"Who's that guy?" Daffin asked flatly.
"Adrian. An upperclassman. " I saw his face on the announcement board—Student of the Year," Clayton replied.
"And he seems... too close to Odel. " I don't like it," Emilio added.
"Neither do I!" Daffin said, clapping Emilio on the shoulder, then gripping it tightly.
"Calm down. He's just a regular human. What could he possibly do? " But seriously, let go of my shoulder," Emilio grumbled.
Daffin smirked sheepishly and patted Emilio's shoulder as if to smooth things over.
"A regular human, huh?" Clayton murmured, his eyes fixed on Adrian as the latter exited the classroom. "But for some reason, he feels... different."
The three vampires, still watching from afar, grew increasingly irritated when Fiona left, leaving Odel and Adrian chatting alone.
"This can't go on!" Daffin declared.
"If you go over there, what if she starts asking you last night's questions again?" Emilio hesitated.
The two exchanged glances before looking for Clayton, but to their surprise, he was already ahead of them. Without waiting for his brothers, Clayton was now standing beside Odel, gently taking her arm.
"Odel, let's go home," Clayton said, his tone calm but firm.
