Chapter 17: Don’t Be So Self-Absorbed
Oh well, looks like it's time for me to start a new account again…
...
"?"
Lihua opened her eyes in confusion, still seeing Otto's blond hair.
She hadn't died?
She looked at her arm, the purplish-black veins from the Honkai infection had completely disappeared.
Wow, Otto is amazing. He succeeded on the first try?!
I'm sorry. I shouldn't have made fun of you earlier!
"Otto, you're incredible!!"
Lihua rushed forward and gave Otto a big hug. "This means everyone is saved!"
Otto, who had been freezing, finally snapped out of it when Lihua hugged him. He was covered in cold sweat. "Lihua, don't be so reckless next time..."
He hadn't been prepared when Lihua had snatched the syringe and injected herself!
He was confident in his medicine this time, but what about next time? What if the medicine hadn't been fully developed?
Otto shuddered at the thought.
Lihua trusted him, but the more she trusted him, the more pressure he felt. He was worried that he would mess up, and something tragic would happen.
"Okay, okay, I'll listen to you."
Lihua pouted. Wasn't I just careful around Kallen because I was sick? Why does he have to be so naggy?
But she would forgive him, since he had created a cure for the Black Death in one shot.
"So, does this mean the medicine was successful?"
Otto's body stiffened, but he tried to act casual.
"Yeah. After some more tests with volunteers, if everything is fine, then we can release it to the public."
"That's great! I knew you were the hero to save the world!"
The hero to save the world?
Otto laughed at himself. He was no hero.
Selling the medicine at high prices, hoarding supplies, bribing executives, doing human experiments; each of those sins made him a villain.
If Lihua knew about this, would she still treat him so kindly?
Impossible. Given Lihua's nature, the day these things were exposed would probably be the day that they parted ways.
Otto wouldn't let that happen. He would hide everything and slowly climb to the top, ensuring that no one in the world could hurt her.
He wasn't the world's hero; he was Lihua's hero!
---
The Black Death was quickly contained thanks to the medicine developed by Otto. With Lihua's help, the civilians had a high survival rate.
Because of her actions during the outbreak, Lihua's popularity among the civilians soared to incredible levels. Schicksal HQ even tried to get her back.
Lihua agreed, because going back to Schicksal meant she could often see Kallen and Otto and farm their energy.
After the Black Death, Lihua understood that Kallen and Otto weren't just ATMs. They were goldmines!
The energy was flowing like a waterfall!
As long as she approached Kallen while in the presence of Otto, or Otto while with Kallen, she could continuously reap the energy.
The only problem was that Lihua felt like a bad woman who was interfering in a relationship…
If this happened to someone else, Lihua might even think that they were in love with her. But it was possible for Kallen… but for Otto…
You all knew, right? That was Otto.
That ultimate, invincible, and obsessed Kallen simp would never be interested in anyone else. If you thought he liked you, then it was either your illusion, or he was deliberately making you think that to use you.
Countless people had such unrealistic delusions, and ended up being turned into tools.
These were the facts, personally tried and tested by those unlucky Valkyries who overestimated themselves.
So when dealing with Otto, she couldn't be so self-absorbed. He was truly evil.
Even the old fool who was the Schicksal Archbishop was more likely to like her than Otto!
Luckily, she knew what was going to happen. And she knew herself. She wouldn't be fooled by Otto's tricks.
On the other hand, Lihua didn't give up on harvesting favorability from the general populace.
She continued to operate her hospital, and turned it into a charity organization that was a mix of a hospital, an orphanage, and a red cross that aimed to solve all sorts of problems the people encountered. The organization was even backed by Schicksal and became a subdivision of the organization. It was called the Schicksal Charitable Association.
Thanks to this organization, civilians' problems were being solved. Schicksal's name was starting to improve. As a representative of the Schicksal Charitable Association, Lihua was beloved by the people.
Even minor things like Lihua choking on her food or falling down became headlines, making people worried for half the day. It was like the modern-day fan clubs. She hated them back on Earth, but when she became the fan club's idol, she was totally into it.
Small things like that became news and allowed her to get energy from the people. This was a guaranteed win!
Lihua had planned to die when Schicksal started their eastern expedition, but she now thought she could die sooner. If she died now, her death would create a massive surge of energy from the public!
Because of that, whenever someone wanted to scam or corrupt her, she always rejected them harshly and berated them.
Each of these people had connections with powerful individuals. Normal people wouldn't even dare to reject them, let alone scold them. Someone who did that would probably be found dead in a ditch in Kolosten with seven arrows in their back the next day.
But that was what Lihua wanted!
If she died so tragically, then not only would the public give her energy, but also Kallen and Otto. As long as she dragged her injuries out until she was found dead, she could become an energy millionaire.
Unfortunately, even when she was that arrogant and righteous, nobody tried to assassinate her. Lihua was really sad.
Influential people, what's wrong with you? You can't even kill an orphan like me?
I don't even have a bodyguard, and the only two people I know with any power are Otto and Kallen, who have no real power. Why can't you kill me?
What Lihua didn't know was that Otto and Kallen had both become the backbone of Schicksal because of their internal fighting.
Lihua had been waiting to die for years, until Schicksal was finally ready to launch an invasion against the Ming Dynasty.
Lihua's response: You're all just cowards.
And Otto and Kallen, who were secretly protecting her from countless assassination attempts could only say: Ancestor, please be more restrained!
