Chapter 43: Chapter 42: Shindou Aio’s Milotic!
Late afternoon, around five o'clock.
The school's knockout tournament was nearing its conclusion.
Each match had eliminated one trainer per round, narrowing the competition down to the final eight.
Only one match remained—Shindou Aio's battle.
Her opponent?
A girl named Tachibana Mei, the class representative of Class 2—rumored to come from a wealthy and influential family.
But Ryuu had never cared enough to look into her background.
She wasn't important.
The only thing that mattered right now was Aio's match.
"Charmander, it's your turn!"
Aio released her trusty partner, a well-trained Charmander.
Next to her, an Eevee stood ready—a Pokémon Ryuu had won in a shop battle and later gifted to her.
Though its potential only reached the gym level, Aio had trained it well, and it had already grown to the Common level.
Together, they had secured victory after victory, carrying Aio to the final round of knockouts.
Ryuu stood on the sidelines, arms crossed, watching closely.
Aio's progress was important to him.
She was going to be his future partner in battle—someone who would stand by his side, not just as a trainer but as an equal.
If she wasn't strong enough, she'd fall behind.
He couldn't let that happen.
"I've heard about you," Mei said, smirking as she tossed a Poké Ball forward.
"But I won't lose that easily. Let's go, Onix!"
A massive, serpentine boulder emerged onto the battlefield, towering over Charmander.
The ground trembled beneath its weight.
[Pokémon: Onix]
Level: 22
Potential: Quasi-Elite
Ryuu's eyes narrowed.
So the rumors about Mei's background were true.
She had connections—probably similar to his own family.
After all, getting a Pokémon with quasi-Elite potential wasn't something just anyone could do.
He glanced at Aio.
This was going to be tough.
Charmander was a step behind in level, and Onix's Rock-type attacks would hit like a truck.
Even Eevee wasn't strong enough to turn the tide.
Which meant—
She had only one real option.
"Aio, don't let me down," Ryuu muttered under his breath.
As if hearing him, Aio took a deep breath.
Then, she smiled confidently.
She already knew what to do.
"Let's end this quickly," she said, grabbing her true trump card.
"Go, Milotic!"
The Poké Ball snapped open—
A long, elegant figure emerged onto the battlefield, its shimmering scales reflecting the light.
Gasps spread through the crowd.
"A Milotic?!"
"Are you kidding me?! How does she have that?!"
Among the students—especially the girls—pure envy filled their eyes.
Milotic wasn't just powerful.
It was gorgeous.
Owning one was a dream.
Many would trade years off their life just to have one.
Even Mei flinched.
Her confidence shattered.
She had assumed she held the advantage—
But now?
She was completely outmatched.
If she had known Aio had a Milotic, she never would've sent out Onix.
[Pokémon: Milotic]
Level: 21
Potential: Quasi-Elite
Though Milotic's level was slightly lower, the type advantage was absolute.
Water vs. Rock.
This battle was already over.
"Onix, Dig!" Mei commanded.
If she couldn't attack directly, she'd go underground.
Onix burrowed beneath the battlefield, disappearing from sight.
But Aio was prepared.
"Milotic, Water Pulse—into the hole!"
Milotic whipped around, unleashing a concentrated blast of water straight into the ground.
The attack rushed through the tunnels, filling them instantly.
"Onix, dodge—!"
Too late.
A deep rumbling shook the battlefield.
The ground split open as Onix shot upward, completely drenched.
Mei's face turned pale.
"Now, Aqua Tail!"
Milotic moved gracefully, its long tail coiling mid-air before swinging down—
BAM!
The water-infused attack smashed into Onix's head, sending it crashing into the ground like a meteor.
The entire arena trembled from the impact.
The crowd fell silent.
Even Mei knew—this was over.
"Milotic, Water Pulse—finish it!"
A final blast of water hit Onix, sending the massive Pokémon skidding backward.
It didn't get up.
The referee raised his hand.
"Onix is unable to battle! The winner is Shindou Aio!"
Cheers erupted from the stands.
Some girls screamed out of excitement.
Others just stared in pure jealousy.
Mei's hands shook as she recalled Onix.
She had been completely crushed.
And all because she had underestimated her opponent.
Ryuu leaned against the railing, watching with amusement.
"So… she was hiding her trump card all along, huh?"
At first, he had actually worried about Aio's chances.
He had even considered helping her train more.
But now?
There was no need.
She was already strong.
And just for that—
She deserved a reward.
Ryuu's eyes flickered with mischief as he thought about how he'd congratulate her later.
After all, a lesson needed to be taught.
For keeping secrets from him.
He tapped his fingers against the railing, nodding to himself.
"The best spots have more meat. Won't hurt her as much if I go for those…"
The corner of his mouth curled up.
His gaze locked onto Aio.
Tonight, she was getting a good spanking.
Of course—
She didn't know that yet.
...
Aio walked off the battlefield, wiping sweat from her forehead.
Before she could say anything, Ryuu stepped forward, smirking.
"You really kept this from me?"
Aio blinked innocently.
"What do you mean?"
Ryuu cracked his knuckles.
"You know exactly what I mean."
Aio took a step backward.
She could feel it.
The dangerous aura around him.
"Wait—Ryuu—hold on!"
Too late.
He grabbed her wrist and started pulling her away.
"Time for your punishment."
"W-What?! No! Stop! Help—!"
The students just watched, confused.
"Uh… are they flirting?"
"…I think so?"
No one knew for sure.
But one thing was clear—
Shindou Aio had won the battle…
But now, she was facing her real challenge.
