Chapter 56: Chapter 56
Outside Kakashi's courtyard, only a small squad of four ANBU guards stood watch.
"I'll handle two of them; you two take the others," Naruto whispered, signaling to Tsunade and Might Guy before darting into action.
Naruto's fox tails glimmered faintly in the moonlight as they lashed out, striking with deadly precision.
The immense force locked onto the throats of two guards, crushing their laryngeal bones before they could react.
Death came instantly.
Tsunade and Might Guy moved just as swiftly, neutralizing the remaining guards in moments.
The four bodies were dragged into a nearby ditch, where they would remain unnoticed until morning.
None of this, however, concerned Naruto.
The trio entered the courtyard, and Might Guy confidently produced a set of keys to the house.
"Wait—why do you even have the key to his house?!" Naruto asked, his face a mixture of shock and confusion.
His thoughts raced. I always suspected there was something weird going on between you two. Do they… live together?
Tsunade, sensing the inappropriate direction of Naruto's thoughts, subtly tugged at his sleeve. She silently vowed to keep Naruto far away from Konoha's infamous white-haired ninja in the future.
With a click, the door swung open.
Inside, Kakashi leaned casually against the wall, his gaze cold and unyielding.
"Guy, are you here to kill me?" he asked flatly, his tone devoid of surprise.
When Naruto and his team had dispatched the ANBU guards, Kakashi had immediately sensed the disturbance. Even if he couldn't pinpoint their chakra signatures, the disappearance of the guards was enough to alert him.
And now, here they were.
"Kakashi, we're here to bring you back to Shin-Konoha," Might Guy said earnestly. "Konoha is rotten, and Shin-Konoha is where you belong."
As Kakashi's longtime partner and classmate, Guy couldn't stand to see him wasting away in the decaying remnants of their once-proud village.
"Ridiculous," Kakashi snapped. "If I shout for help, you'll be surrounded in seconds. Do you have any idea what you're doing?"
This was still Konoha, even in its current state. Its power wasn't something a few rogue shinobi could challenge.
"I know," Guy said firmly. "But I'm still taking you with me. You don't belong here anymore."
Naruto and Tsunade exchanged glances, their expressions unreadable. To them, Guy's heartfelt declaration only reinforced their suspicion: These two definitely have some kind of relationship.
Kakashi sighed. Guy's stubbornness wasn't new to him, but it seemed he'd have to fight his old friend to settle this.
"Don't forget our mission," Naruto interjected, breaking the tension.
Their goal wasn't just Kakashi. They needed to take more than one ninja back to Shin-Konoha.
"What exactly are you here for?" Kakashi asked, narrowing his eyes. He couldn't quite figure out their true intentions.
"To steal people," Naruto replied bluntly. "Shin-Konoha needs teachers for its ninja academy. We came to Konoha to recruit—or rather, to take—some."
Naruto grinned slyly. "We're really short on staff. You should come with us. Might Guy is already there."
Kakashi's expression darkened. "You're insane. This will start a war between the two villages." His hand instinctively moved to the hilt of his ninja sword.
"Don't move," Naruto warned, his voice cold. "I can knock you out and drag you back if I have to."
Before Kakashi could react, one of Naruto's fox tails shot forward, coiling around his neck with startling speed.
When did he get so fast? Kakashi thought, shocked by Naruto's precision and strength.
Despite himself, Kakashi couldn't help but feel regret. How did Konoha let someone with this much talent slip through its fingers?
Naruto's raw potential was undeniable. In another life, he could have risen to the pinnacle of the ninja world, perhaps even surpassing the legends of old.
But that life was gone. Instead, Naruto had built something new—Shin-Konoha.
In some ways, it reminded Kakashi of the village's founding.
"I don't know much," Naruto said, his voice softer now. "But I do know this: Guy considers you a dear friend. And as annoying as he can be, he's one of my sensei. You can be too—or not. That's up to you."
Naruto's tone shifted again, becoming sharper, more commanding. "But I'm done talking. Make your decision now."
The tail around Kakashi's neck tightened slightly, the fur bristling like sharp needles against his skin.
Kakashi closed his eyes and sighed. The Konoha he once loved was already gone. Perhaps it had disappeared the day his father took his own life or when he saw his closest friends die one by one.
"Fine," Kakashi said at last, his voice tinged with resignation. "I'll go with you. Let's see if Shin-Konoha is what you claim it to be."
