Chapter 2: Chapter 2 Are You Serious This Time?
The next day, Sheng Youxia went to the hospital for a follow-up visit.
She had no idea how much longer her eyes could hold out.
As she hurried to the elevator, she bumped into someone by accident and all her belongings fell to the ground.
Sheng Youxia was just about to bend over to pick them up when she never expected to run into Fu Shilv here.
During a workday, shouldn't he be at his Hua Xing Hospital holding consultations?
Fu Shilv moved his gaze from her to the ground. There certainly were a lot of examination forms.
"What are you doing at the hospital?"
Sheng Youxia saw that his attention was still on those papers and quickly crouched down.
Her heart was tense, and she tried to suppress her trembling hands as she hurriedly stuffed the examination forms into her bag after picking them up.
"Didn't you say Grandpa was pressing hard? It's been so long without conceiving, so I came for a check-up."
Fu Shilv's eyes were sharp as he scrutinized her face, "Then why didn't you go to Hua Xing Hospital?"
The infertility department there was renowned nationwide.
Sheng Youxia struggled to find an excuse, "Isn't it embarrassing to run into your colleagues?"
Fu Shilv stepped closer, "If you're sick, you seek treatment. What's there to be embarrassed about?"
"What if the checkup shows there's nothing wrong with me? Then everyone will know the problem lies with you."
The man's face tightened, his knack for implicating others seemed to be on the rise, though recently his family had indeed been pressuring him to the point of headache.
"I happen to be free in a bit, I'll take you to Hua Xing Hospital for an examination."
Sheng Youxia felt like she'd shot herself in the foot, "There's no need, I've done all the checks, I'm perfectly normal."
"Really?" Fu Shilv extended his hand in front of her, "Let me see the examination forms."
Sheng Youxia was at a loss for words.
Fortunately, Fu Shilv didn't insist, "I don't trust other hospitals."
He took a step out and then turned back, staring at her displeased, "Are you coming or not?"
With no choice, Sheng Youxia reluctantly followed.
With just a phone call from Fu Shilv, the hospital's examination room was already cleared out.
The doctor in charge was very polite, "Mrs. Fu, please take off your pants and get on the bed."
Sheng Youxia looked at the man standing beside her. Fu Shilv had a noble and handsome face, a natural beauty, with not a shred of frivolity showing when he sat down in the chair by the bed.
"She's too embarrassed. Draw the curtain."
The doctor chuckled lightly, "Between husband and wife, there's still shyness?"
It was fortunate that Sheng Youxia wore a skirt, but as she slipped off her underwear, the fabric grazed her thighs.
An itch rose in Fu Shilv's throat as he peered through the curtain, watching her lie down and bend her legs.
This posture...
He flicked open the lighter in his hand with a "ding", forcefully calming his mind.
The doctor was very thorough in the examination, and Sheng Youxia nervously gripped the sheets.
"Relax, Mrs. Fu. This will only take a moment."
"Mmh..."
She let out a tremulous sound, whether from discomfort or something else.
Sheng Youxia's legs became even tenser.
Meanwhile, Fu Shilv's entire body tensed.
"Do the checkup properly. It's been a year—why haven't we conceived yet?"
The doctor didn't dare to relax. With all the equipment in place, the experience was no small ordeal for Sheng Youxia, who dreaded these examinations.
"Some of the reports won't be ready until the afternoon, I will call you then to inform you."
Sheng Youxia put her underwear back on, still feeling some pain.
She heard the grating noise of the chair being pushed back, followed by a pair of hands that parted the curtain.
Sheng Youxia hurriedly pulled down her skirt as Fu Shilv grabbed one of her arms, intending to help her up.
Then she remembered the phone call from last night and felt a sudden wave of nausea.
Fu Shilv was tall, and Sheng Youxia's gaze landed on the man's slender fingers.
These were the hands of a surgeon, meant to save lives and help the injured, but Sheng Youxia knew this man—inside and out, he was nothing but pure ruthlessness.
She brushed away his support, "I've already done my part. Now it's your turn."
"What?"
"Is it definitely my fault that we can't have a child? Maybe the problem is with you. You even took medicine last night."
Fu Shilv's handsome face darkened as the doctor on the side enjoyed a juicy revelation.
That couldn't be right; wasn't it said that men with big noses were supposed to be impressive?
Annoyed and with his pride on the line, Fu Shilv could not lower himself to argue with her in front of a colleague about whether or not he was capable.
His icy aloofness was clear on his face as he turned and left.
Sheng Youxia quickly gathered her things and thanked the doctor before leaving.
Outside in the hallway, the harsh light streamed down, and Sheng Youxia heard a nurse greeting Fu Shilv.
"Good to see you, Mr. Fu."
He acknowledged her flatly.
But as Sheng Youxia raised her eyes, her vision suddenly blurred until she could only see a large silhouette.
Sheng Youxia panicked, fearing Fu Shilv would notice. She hurried forward a few steps and grabbed his hand.
Fu Shilv turned to look at her, "Weren't you so capable just now?"
Despite the closeness, Sheng Youxia could no longer discern the expression on Fu Shilv's face.
She forced a smile, "We are husband and wife after all. Holding hands won't cost you any flesh, will it?"
As soon as she finished speaking, Fu Shilv's hand slipped away.
She listened to the footsteps; it seemed he was walking faster.
Sheng Youxia hastily tried to follow but bumped into someone, and immediately, there was the clattering sound of things falling to the ground.
The patient's family member whom she bumped into was furious, "Are you blind? All the food I prepared is now spilled, are you blind or what?!"
Sheng Youxia could only discern a blurry figure; she didn't dare move recklessly anymore.
She heard footsteps double back; it was Fu Shilv's voice, "Watch your mouth."
"She bumped into me, the hallway is so wide, what is it if not blindness?"
Sheng Youxia's breathing was heavy, her eyes truly could not see again.
Fu Shilv pulled out his wallet and casually took out a few red banknotes.
The patient's family member wanted to say more, but upon seeing the man's cold face, they wisely shut their mouth.
"Let's go," Fu Shilv said in a deep voice.
Sheng Youxia wanted to reach for his hand but grabbed at air.
She stepped forward and her foot landed in the mess of food, leaving a greasy footprint on the floor tile soon after.
The person who took the money murmured softly, "Are you really blind?"
Sheng Youxia walked a few steps before someone bumped her shoulder again, she winced in pain but didn't make a sound.
She vaguely saw a row of dark blue chairs against the wall, and walked over to sit down.
Fu Shilv saw that she wasn't following and frowned as he looked at her.
"Aren't you coming?"
Sheng Youxia closed her eyes, "I want to sit for a while."
Had Fu Shilv paid any attention to her, he would have noticed something amiss.
But, alas, this man had no place for her in his heart.
Sheng Youxia leaned back slightly, her gaze directed toward where Fu Shilv stood, "Can you sit down and keep me company for a while?"
She didn't know if her eyes would get better later; she was afraid to stay here alone.
Fu Shilv's phone rang at just the right moment, and Sheng Youxia heard him answer, "Hello?"
A woman's voice came from the other end, "Mr. Fu, Nianwei is in severe pain in her eyes, she secretly took several painkillers behind my back."
"I'll be right over."
Sheng Youxia's plea for him 'not to go' never made it out, as Fu Shilv was already preparing to leave.
He put away his phone, and Sheng Youxia stammered but still spoke up, "Fu Shilv, can you go later? Even just ten minutes to keep me company would be good."
Fu Shilv looked at her sitting there, looking normal enough.
A healthy person can't understand the pain of the blind.
"If you don't want to leave now, then sit for a while, I'll take you home later."
His tone, dropping into Sheng Youxia's ears, was sharp and indifferent.
It pierced her heart.
Moisture welled up within Sheng Youxia's eyes and a stabbing pain came from her eyeballs, "Fu Shilv!"
Someone nearby, perhaps feeling pity for her, said, "Don't shout, he's already far away."
Sheng Youxia looked around; she felt abandoned, struggling to make a step without sight.
Later, Sheng Youxia regained some clarity and called Mrs. Feng to come and pick her up.
It wasn't until the evening that Fu Shilv returned.
He brought back the scent of the hospital with him, took off his coat, and noticed that Sheng Youxia wasn't asleep yet.
"When did you come back?"
"Did you go back looking for me?"
Fu Shilv's fingers reached his cuffs, leisurely unbuttoning one, "Hmm."
"I came back home on my own."
Before going to the bathroom, Fu Shilv glanced at the woman in bed; the light slid off her shoulder, making her brows appear cold.
It was as if he was explaining, "There were two major surgeries today, so I got back late."
Sheng Youxia said absently, "Oh."
Fu Shilv got into bed after his shower, lifting the covers, letting in a chill. As he moved closer, his leg touched hers, but Sheng Youxia moved away.
"Was it you who performed the surgery on Liang Nianwei?"
Fu Shilv looked troubled, and he could be seen grabbing a pack of cigarettes from the nightstand.
He rarely smoked; Sheng Youxia propped herself up as a blue flame leapt, blurring his features further.
He inhaled and exhaled the smoke and said, "Yes."
"Then there's no need to worry, you are the miracle worker of the medical world; for you, this is just a minor operation."
Sheng Youxia had also fantasized—if Fu Shilv personally treated her eyes, would her chances of recovery be greater?
It's a pity that there was only one pair of corneas.
Fu Shilv's gaze fell upon her, a sense of claustrophobia closing in, "Where did you hear about Liang Nianwei?"
Sheng Youxia reached to brush her hair, "No need to find out, I suspect some paparazzi are in love with you, hence the constant attention to your scandals."
Fu Shilv glanced at her askance.
Sheng Youxia curved her lips slightly, "Dirty dog."
The hand holding the cigarette tensed, "Who are you cursing?"
"The paparazzi, of course. I step in now and then to clear things up for you, it's exhausting."
Fu Shilv laughed scornfully, "Aren't you used to it?"
This man, really a cur through and through; she must have been blind to have loved him for so many years.
The scent of smoke got into Sheng Youxia's nostrils; she waved her hand through the air. Although Fu Shilv did smoke occasionally, doing so in the room, on her bed—it was a first.
"Is it serious this time?"
