Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Facing Death
The gray sky hung heavily above the barren land, a world devoid of life and filled with an overwhelming silence. In the midst of this dead world, a lone figure clad in black and silver-trimmed attire walked slowly towards the fallen Thor. He glanced at the unconscious god, a hint of amusement playing at the corners of his mouth. Is Asgard really this corrupt now?
Thor's eyes flickered open, and the first thing he heard was a voice—the cold, mechanical voice of the system.
"Drip, congratulations to the host for triggering Hela's exclusive mission: Facing death. As the eldest princess of Asgard, Hela will take back everything she has in the future. Now, let's start the first round ahead of time!"
"Mission goal: Face death. Do not use external force to keep alive in the hands of Hela."
"Mission reward: Passive skill—Death resistance. In any case, time will go back after death, and the host will return for a certain period of time, retaining the memory. This effect should not exceed fifteen minutes. Enemies with high strength may notice it."
For a moment, Thor was silent. If he were still the mighty god of thunder, perhaps he could have fought back, at least managed a struggle. But now, he was as mortal as any other man. His strength was gone, his power drained, and the Fat House Power granted by the system didn't make him invincible. He was trapped.
Thor's mind raced. He thought about the three Infinite Gems experience coupons that he still had—the Power Gem, Space Gem, and Soul Gem. He could activate the power of the gems to escape or teleport, but that would fail the mission. He needed to find a way to survive without using them. The weight of the mission hung over him.
Taking a deep breath, Thor steeled himself and slowly began to sit up, preparing himself for the challenge ahead. He had to face Hela, a sister he never truly knew, and deal with whatever would come.
As he looked up, his gaze landed on Hela, whose appearance was nothing like what he had expected. The black, messy hair, the smoky makeup, and the fierce aura around her made her seem almost unrecognizable—yet there was something undeniably familiar about her.
Thor's face lit up with excitement. "Sister?!" he exclaimed, his voice tinged with disbelief and joy. "It's you! I thought you were dead!"
Hela froze for a moment, taken aback by his reaction. Her eyes narrowed as she tried to understand his words. She was aware that Odin had concealed her existence for so long. Few, if any, knew about her. Thor's claim, though, made her wary. She had to proceed carefully.
"Stop," she interrupted firmly, her tone cutting through the air. "I ask the questions, you answer. If you don't cooperate, there's no point in continuing this conversation. But if you do... perhaps I'll offer you a chance to serve me."
Thor's heart sank at the thought of being forced into submission. There's no way I'll kneel, he thought bitterly.
But he didn't let it show. Instead, he leaned into the conversation. "How do you know me? Odin covered up your existence. No one, not even me, knew you were alive until just now."
Hela scoffed, her sneer filled with disdain. "Of course, you didn't know. But you should. After all, Odin has always kept secrets from you."
Thor continued, his excitement growing. "No, you were mentioned to me in an ancient tome. I read about you, and when I asked Father, he got angry and told me never to mention you again. But then, Mother confirmed you existed, though she never told me where you were."
Hela's face darkened as she processed his words. She knew she had been erased from the history of Asgard, hidden away for reasons she was still trying to understand. But hearing Thor talk about her so casually brought a rush of conflicting emotions.
She quickly changed the subject, her voice icy as she asked, "Why are you here then? What brings you to this forsaken land?"
Thor's expression shifted to one of anger and frustration. His fists clenched as he recounted his disobedience. "Because I defied him! The enemy has already attacked Asgard, and Father still wanted to talk and negotiate with them! I couldn't stand by and watch Asgard fall under that hypocrisy. So, I took matters into my own hands and attacked Jotunheim's Giants without his approval."
Thor's voice grew more impassioned as he spoke, his eyes blazing. "If Father had stopped playing at peace, I would have solved the problem long ago. It's time for the universe to remember the name of Asgard. But instead, he clings to that weak, hypocritical sense of mercy. And for that, I was exiled! For defending our people, I was cast away!"
As Thor spoke, his anger poured out. He knew that Odin's way of dealing with the enemy—through diplomacy—would never work. The Frost Giants would never appreciate mercy. They would only use it as an opportunity to strike harder. His thoughts were a tangled mess, but they all led to one conclusion: peace at any cost was not the answer.
Though he didn't fully agree with Hela's militarism, he couldn't support Odin's appeasement either. Both extremes were dangerous. But Thor believed in one thing: Only those who are willing to fight can truly make peace. And he would fight, even if it meant going against his own family's ideals.
