Chapter 18: Chapter 17: Going to Nobita's House as a Guest 【Part 2】
Doraemon had half a piece of dorayaki in his mouth when Nobita burst into the room, disheveled and clearly upset. Quickly swallowing the dorayaki, Doraemon raised an eyebrow.
"Eh? Nobita, what's the matter? Why are you such a mess?!"
While he voiced his concern, Doraemon didn't really need an answer. He could tell Nobita had been bullied—again. However, as someone who had watched over Nobita for years, Doraemon knew that most of Nobita's problems came not from others but from his own actions.
"Ah! Waaaah! Doraemon, Jaian said… Jaian said he's going to make me regret it!" Nobita wailed, tears streaming down his face.
For as long as he could remember, Nobita had been terrified of Jaian. Their "friendship" revolved around years of relentless bullying that left Nobita with a deep-rooted fear of his so-called friend.
Unable to contain his emotions, Nobita threw himself into Doraemon's arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Don't cry, Nobita," Doraemon said, patting him gently on the back. "Calm down, stand up, and tell me why Jaian is threatening you this time."
Though Doraemon was always there to help, he secretly hoped to mold Nobita into someone brave and self-reliant. That was a long-term dream, of course—one that required endless patience and guidance.
Through his tears, Nobita sniffled, "Doraemon, do you have any gadgets that can help me?"
Doraemon's face lit up. "Of course! I'll help you this time. I'll get you a gadget that'll make you strong and good at fighting! How about it, Nobita?"
He hoped this would be a turning point—perhaps Nobita could finally learn to stand up for himself.
"Uh, no thanks, Doraemon..." Nobita muttered, scratching the back of his head. "Actually, I just need something that'll help me escape quickly."
"Escape?" Doraemon asked, baffled.
"Yeah," Nobita nodded earnestly. "Why fight if I can avoid trouble? I'd rather nap in the hills or hang out at Shizuka's house."
Suddenly, something clicked in Nobita's mind. He slapped his forehead and gasped. "Oh no! Shizuka and Dekisugi are coming over today!"
He had completely forgotten about their visit amidst all the chaos with Jaian. His tear-streaked face quickly transformed into a mischievous grin.
Seeing the sudden change in Nobita's expression, Doraemon frowned. "Nobita, what's so funny? You're acting strange."
Before Nobita could respond, his mother, Tamako, called from downstairs. "Nobita! Shizuka's here to see you! Come down, quickly!"
Tamako welcomed Shizuka warmly at the door. "Come in, dear. Make yourself comfortable!"
Like most mothers, Tamako was thrilled when her son associated with bright, well-mannered children. Shizuka was not only kind but also an excellent student, and Tamako admired her deeply.
"Hi, Shizuka!"
Dekisugi arrived shortly after, slightly out of breath. His newfound enthusiasm for physical activities had improved his efficiency, allowing him to catch up despite leaving later than Shizuka.
"Hello, ma'am," Dekisugi greeted politely. "I'm Dekisugi, Nobita's class monitor. Shizuka and I planned to do homework with Nobita today. I hope it's no trouble."
Tamako immediately recognized Dekisugi. He was well-known among parents in the neighborhood for his intelligence and diligence. Delighted by his offer to help Nobita, she welcomed him warmly.
Meanwhile, Nobita, who had been scheming upstairs, heard his mother's call and raced down the stairs with excitement. He flung the door open and beamed, "Shizuka! You're here!"
But his smile quickly faded when he saw Dekisugi standing beside her.
"Oh... it's just you, Dekisugi..." Nobita muttered, disappointed.
Dekisugi raised an eyebrow but remained composed.
"Nobita!" Tamako scolded sharply. "How could you be so rude? Apologize to Dekisugi immediately! He's here to help you with your homework!"
Reluctantly, Nobita mumbled, "Sorry, Dekisugi..."
"It's alright, Auntie," Shizuka interjected with a kind smile. "Nobita didn't mean it."
Satisfied, Tamako headed to the kitchen to prepare snacks for the guests. Meanwhile, Dekisugi handed Nobita a manga that was tucked neatly between his textbooks.
"Here," Dekisugi said with a smile. "I promised to lend you the latest volume of Lion Mask."
Nobita's eyes lit up as he took the manga. "Wow! Thanks so much, Dekisugi! This is awesome!"
The moment Nobita got his hands on the comic, he completely forgot about Shizuka, Dekisugi, or even Doraemon. Instead, he plopped down on the floor and began reading excitedly. Doraemon, intrigued by the manga, joined him.
Dekisugi sighed and turned to Shizuka. "Come on in, Shizuka. Make yourself comfortable."
Shizuka chuckled softly as she stepped inside. Dekisugi followed, observing Nobita and Doraemon huddled over the comic as if nothing else existed. He shook his head and thought, Some things never change.
Once upstairs in Nobita's room, Dekisugi couldn't help but glance around with interest. Despite having visited countless times, the room always intrigued him. It was simple yet oddly charming, with its desk, cabinets, and closet neatly arranged.
"You know," Dekisugi said, "this room feels different every time I visit."
Nobita barely heard him, his attention entirely consumed by the manga. Shizuka, on the other hand, politely acknowledged Dekisugi's comment.
"Nobita!" Shizuka finally said, crossing her arms. "We came here to do homework, remember?"
"Huh?" Nobita looked up, blinking. "Oh, right. Homework."
He glanced sheepishly at Dekisugi and Shizuka, then at Doraemon. "Uh... Doraemon, do you have a gadget to help me with this?"
Before Doraemon could respond, Dekisugi interjected. "Nobita, you can't rely on gadgets for everything. Come on, let's get started."
With a sigh, Nobita reluctantly set the manga aside. Shizuka handed him her neatly organized notes, and the trio settled down to study. Doraemon watched from the side, amused by how easily Nobita shifted from excitement to exasperation.
Though Nobita struggled to focus, having Shizuka and Dekisugi around made a noticeable difference. Their patience and encouragement motivated him—if only a little—to put in some effort.
As the evening progressed, the room filled with laughter, light banter, and occasional scoldings from Shizuka. Even Doraemon chimed in with his usual witty remarks, keeping the atmosphere lively.
For all his shortcomings, Nobita couldn't deny that he was grateful for his friends.
