Billionaire: Money and Power

Chapter 26: Chapter 26 – "The Price of Power"

The City Reacts

Morning came, and Lagos was already buzzing with the news. Senator Bako was dead. Shot in a private compound. No suspects, no witnesses, just silence.

The media called it an assassination. The police called it an investigation. The streets? They called it a shift in power.

Joshua sat in his penthouse, watching the news play on the large screen. The anchor spoke in a serious tone, but he barely listened. He already knew what they were saying.

Bako had enemies. Plenty of them. But only a few had the power to pull this off. And now, everyone wanted to know—who did it?

The problem? Some already had an answer.

His phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number.

"You've made your move. Now it's our turn."

Joshua exhaled, locking his phone.

Tunde, sitting across from him, leaned forward. "That's not a good sign."

Joshua smirked. "It never is."

The First Warning

The first shot came fast.

Later that afternoon, one of Joshua's business fronts—a luxury club in Victoria Island—was hit. Armed men stormed in, setting fire to the place. Security fought back, but by the time the flames were out, the message was clear.

This wasn't just business anymore. It was war.

Joshua arrived at the scene an hour later. Smoke still lingered in the air. The entrance was a mess of broken glass and bullet holes. His men stood outside, waiting for orders.

Adisa walked up, his face unreadable. "Six dead. Four of ours, two of theirs. The rest escaped before we could catch them."

Joshua's jaw tightened. "Who?"

Tunde checked his phone. "No official claim yet, but we know the usual suspects."

Joshua glanced at the burning wreckage. "Then we send a message back."

Amara, who had been silent, finally spoke. "Joshua, this isn't like before. This is different."

He turned to her. "I know."

She met his gaze. "Do you?"

Joshua didn't answer. He just walked past her, pulling out his phone.

It was time to make some calls.

A Meeting in the Shadows

They met in a hidden lounge beneath one of Joshua's hotels. Only trusted names were allowed in. No phones. No outsiders. Just business.

Seated around the table were key players—businessmen, underworld figures, and old allies. They had all benefited from Joshua's rise. Now, they were here to see if he could keep his throne.

An older man, Chief Okon, leaned forward. "You've shaken the city, Joshua. And now, the city shakes back."

Joshua nodded. "Bako was a problem. Removing him was necessary."

A younger man, Kola, smirked. "Maybe. But necessary doesn't mean safe."

Tunde exhaled. "If we start worrying about safety, we might as well leave the game."

The room was silent. Then, Chief Okon chuckled. "He's not wrong."

Joshua leaned forward. "This isn't just about me. Bako's people think they can move against us. They burned my club today. Next, it could be your businesses. Your people."

Another man, Musa, nodded. "So what's the move?"

Joshua's eyes darkened. "We remind them who really runs this city."

The Counterattack

That night, they struck back.

Tunde led a team to hit one of the warehouses owned by Bako's remaining allies. No killing—just destruction. Burn their shipments, ruin their supply chains, make them bleed.

Adisa handled another front. A high-ranking police officer had been paid off to cause trouble. A quiet visit to his home, a brief conversation, and suddenly, he wasn't so eager to play against them anymore.

Meanwhile, Joshua made his own move.

He met with Chief Okon privately. They spoke in hushed tones over expensive whiskey, and by the end of the night, deals were made. Promises exchanged. The old man still had influence in government, and with Bako gone, that influence was now in play.

By morning, Joshua's name wasn't just feared—it was respected.

But power came with a price.

And his enemies weren't done yet.

A New Enemy Rises

The next day, Joshua received an unexpected visitor.

A woman. Dressed in a sharp black suit, dark sunglasses hiding her eyes. She walked into his office like she owned the place, her heels clicking against the marble floor.

Tunde moved to block her path, but she simply smiled. "Relax. I'm just here to talk."

Joshua studied her. "And you are?"

She removed her sunglasses. Her eyes were sharp, calculating. "My name is Zara. I represent interests that are… concerned with recent events."

Joshua leaned back. "Whose interests?"

She smirked. "The ones who really run things."

Silence.

Tunde frowned. "Never heard of you."

Zara chuckled. "That's the point."

Joshua exhaled. "What do you want?"

Zara sat down. "A simple warning, Joshua. You've been making moves. Big ones. But in this game, there are levels. And you're stepping into one you're not ready for."

Joshua smirked. "I think I'm doing just fine."

Zara's expression didn't change. "Maybe. But if you keep going down this path, you won't be fighting politicians and street bosses anymore."

She leaned forward, her voice dropping. "You'll be fighting us."

The air in the room felt heavier.

Joshua stared at her. "And who exactly are you?"

She smiled. "You'll find out soon enough."

Then, she stood and walked out.

Joshua didn't move.

Tunde exhaled. "That felt... different."

Joshua nodded. "Yeah."

Adisa, who had been quiet the whole time, finally spoke. "She wasn't bluffing."

Joshua clenched his jaw. He already knew that.

Because for the first time in a long time, he wasn't sure who he was really up against.

And that made things interesting.
