Chapter 27: Chapter 27 – "The Hidden Players"
The Aftermath
The morning after Zara's visit, Joshua sat alone in his penthouse, sipping a glass of whiskey. The city below moved like it always did—traffic jams, market noise, people grinding for survival. But he knew something had changed.
Zara's words lingered.
"You won't be fighting politicians and street bosses anymore. You'll be fighting us."
She wasn't bluffing.
And that meant only one thing.
There were bigger players in the game.
Joshua had dealt with corrupt senators, business rivals, and street-level threats. But this? This was something different.
Tunde walked in, holding his phone. "You need to see this."
He passed it to Joshua. A video was playing. News footage.
"Overnight, three properties linked to Senator Bako's associates were raided. The attackers left no traces. Meanwhile, financial records tied to several major businesses have mysteriously vanished from the government database. Authorities are investigating…"
Joshua smirked. "Looks like someone else is making moves."
Adisa leaned against the wall. "Not just someone. Her."
Joshua's expression darkened. "Zara?"
Tunde nodded. "She didn't just come to warn you, bro. She was letting you know they're already in control."
Joshua leaned back, swirling the whiskey in his glass. "Then it's time to find out who they are."
The First Lead
The first clue came from an unexpected place.
A meeting with Chief Okon.
Joshua met the old man in a private golf club outside the city. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of orange and red. Okon, dressed in his usual traditional attire, sipped his drink calmly as Joshua sat across from him.
"You've stirred something deep, Joshua," Okon said, his voice steady. "And now, the real players have taken notice."
Joshua didn't react. "Who are they?"
Okon smiled. "That's the thing. No one truly knows. They don't have a name, no official records, no traceable history. But they exist. They operate from the shadows, pulling strings most people don't even see."
Tunde frowned. "So, ghosts?"
Okon chuckled. "Not ghosts. Just men and women with power beyond what you're used to."
Joshua exhaled. "And Zara?"
Okon's smile faded. "A messenger. One of their enforcers."
Joshua leaned forward. "Then how do I get to them?"
Okon studied him for a moment, then sighed. "There's a man. A fixer. If anyone can get you answers, it's him."
Joshua narrowed his eyes. "Where do I find him?"
Okon finished his drink. "You don't. He finds you."
Joshua exhaled. "Then I'll make sure he has a reason to."
Setting the Bait
The plan was simple.
Make enough noise, and the fixer would come looking.
Joshua targeted one of the city's underground money laundering networks. A hidden operation disguised as a luxury car dealership in Ikoyi. It was connected to multiple political figures—figures likely tied to Zara's people.
Tunde led the operation. His team moved in at midnight, disabling security and wiping the financial records clean before setting fire to the place.
By morning, the city was talking.
Joshua's name was everywhere again.
And that's when he arrived.
The Fixer
It was late at night when the visitor came.
Joshua sat in his penthouse, reading through financial reports, when a man stepped onto his balcony.
No sound. No warning. Just… there.
Joshua looked up. The man was dressed in a dark suit, hands in his pockets, his face calm.
Tunde burst into the room, gun drawn.
The man raised a hand. "That won't be necessary."
Joshua nodded at Tunde, who lowered the gun but didn't relax.
The man stepped forward. "You've been looking for us."
Joshua smirked. "Took you long enough."
The man chuckled. "You were easy to find. The problem is, you don't understand what you're dealing with."
Joshua leaned back. "Then explain it to me."
The man pulled out a small black card and placed it on the table. It had no name, no number. Just a symbol—an ouroboros, a snake eating its own tail.
"We are the Order," the man said. "We control the balance. And you're disrupting it."
Joshua studied the card. "And what happens if I keep disrupting?"
The man smiled. "Then you won't be having this conversation again."
Joshua met his gaze. "Sounds like a threat."
The man shook his head. "Just reality."
Joshua exhaled. "Then tell me, Fixer… why are you really here?"
The man's smile widened. "To offer you a choice."
He leaned in.
"Step back, and you'll live to build your empire. Keep going… and you'll face something you can't handle."
Silence filled the room.
Joshua smirked. "I don't like being told what I can't handle."
The Fixer chuckled. "Then you'll love what happens next."
He turned and walked to the balcony.
And just like that—he was gone.
Tunde exhaled. "That was… unsettling."
Joshua stared at the black card. The ouroboros seemed to move under the light.
Adisa spoke quietly. "So what now?"
Joshua's fingers tightened around the card.
"Now? We find out exactly who they are."
Because if the Order wanted a game…
He was ready to play.
