As The Only Mutant in Marvel

Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Gwen’s Distress! Need Help?

"Damn little bug! I'm going to kill you!!" The furious Inhuman roared like a wild beast.

Meanwhile, Gwen, swinging through the air and leading him on a chase, glanced back and smirked.

"Catch me if you can, idiot!" she taunted, her voice full of confidence.

But the raging brute wasn't having it.

With a deafening roar, he grabbed a parked

car off the street—a one-ton vehicle—and hoisted it over his head.

"I'll smash you to pieces!"

He hurled the car straight at her.

Gwen easily dodged, flipping mid-air as the car flew past her.

She shot out a web, catching the car in midair and yanking it back toward the Inhuman.

"Here, catch!"

The car crashed into the brute, sending him flying into a nearby wall with a thunderous boom.

Gwen winced.

"Oops. Broke something."

While crimefighting was noble, collateral damage was bound to draw attention—especially from nosy reporters.

She still wanted to build her reputation as a superhero, not as a menace.

"But technically, he threw the car first," Gwen muttered.

"That should count as his fault, right?"

Trying to justify the damage to herself, she let out a nervous laugh.

Before Gwen could think further, the brute clawed his way out of the wreckage, completely unscathed.

His clothes were in tatters, but his skin didn't have a single scratch.

Even Gwen was impressed.

"Wow. Bulletproof and car-proof? Must've been raised on steel bars instead of baby food."

She shook her head, half-joking to cover her unease.

If she had that kind of durability, she wouldn't have gotten hurt the other night.

Her injured arm still throbbed, a painful reminder of her vulnerability.

The brute glared at her from the rubble.

"Get down here and fight me!"

"Ha! As if!"

Gwen stuck out her tongue.

"You think I'm dumb enough to fight you head-on? Keep dreaming!"

She danced across the rooftops, staying just out of reach while the brute roared in frustration.

Suddenly, the brute shouted, "Harland!"

"Huh?"

Gwen blinked.

"Who's that?"

A blur of motion answered her question.

A second Inhuman appeared on the street in an instant, leaving a trail of afterimages.

"Need help already?"

The newcomer smirked, clearly mocking the brute.

"Don't call me an idiot!" the brute snapped.

"You're in this too, so stop acting innocent!"

Harland shrugged.

"Fine, fine. I'll help."

He disappeared and reappeared in seconds, carrying a heavy black bag.

The brute's loot.

"Seriously? This thing weighs a ton," Harland complained, dropping it with a thud.

"Quit whining and keep an eye on it!"

Before Harland could respond, the brute threw a punch at him, leaving a crater where Harland had just been standing.

"Don't call me stupid again!"

Harland dodged easily, smirking as he stepped back.

"Okay, fine. I won't call you stupid… but what about her?"

He pointed at Gwen.

"I'm going to kill her!"

The brute roared.

"Then hurry up and do it."

Harland folded his arms, clearly amused.

Gwen, still perched on a lamppost, had enough.

"Are you two done yet? If you keep chatting, I'm leaving!"

Her voice snapped Harland's attention back to her.

"You're nervous."

Harland grinned.

"Is it because of me? I remember you. We met last night. Is your arm better?"

Gwen instinctively touched her bandaged arm.

"That? Already healed!"

She lied, trying to sound confident.

"Really?"

Harland smirked.

"Then why are you running instead of fighting? Let me guess—you're still hurt."

His words hit their mark.

Gwen clenched her fists.

Her arm wasn't fully healed.

She'd tried to fight through it, but the pain was still there, slowing her down.

"Look at you—wounded and trying to play the hero. How noble."

Harland's mocking tone made Gwen's blood boil.

But no matter how angry she was, she couldn't change the reality.

She was outmatched.

Worse, she'd just run into two Inhumans working together.

"Am I just unlucky today?"

Gwen gritted her teeth.

The Avengers should've shown up by now.

Why weren't they here?

Were they on vacation or something?

She needed help—and fast.

As if on cue, a voice called out.

"Hey! Spider-Girl over there—need a hand?"

Gwen turned toward the voice and blinked in surprise.

Lance stood nearby, hands casually in his pockets, as if he'd just stumbled onto the scene.

"Who the hell are you?"

Harland asked, glaring at him.

"Me?"

Lance grinned.

"Just a guy passing through."

Gwen's heart skipped a beat.

Why was he here?

And more importantly—could he actually help?
