As The Only Mutant in Marvel

Chapter 15: Chapter 15: I Am Batman! No You Are Not!

Dressed like a spider? Are you talking about me? Gwen turned toward the voice. Standing on the edge of a rooftop, a man dressed like a giant bat stared down at her. Gwen pointed at herself. "Are you talking about me?"

"Yes, it's you. Do you need help?" Batman nodded and repeated himself.

"I need it! I need it too much!" Gwen quickly nodded and pointed at the two guys below. "These two bastards are ganging up on me. If you help, it'll be two against two—nice and fair."

"Good—I like fairness." Batman's voice sounded calm, but by the time the words left his mouth, he had already moved.

Before Gwen could blink, he was no longer on the rooftop but perched right behind her.

"Shit!" Gwen jumped. "How did you get here?"

Batman tilted his head and pointed at his feet. "I walked."

"You take me for an idiot?" Gwen muttered, rolling her eyes under the mask.

"Hey! Are you Batman?"

"That's right. Batman!"

"…You're serious?" Gwen froze, then shook her head. "You're just cosplaying, aren't you?"

"No, I am Batman!"

"You are not!"

"How do you know I'm not?"

"Because Batman's a fucking comic book character, that's why!" Gwen put her hand on her forehead and let

out a frustrated sigh. She was starting to regret calling this guy for help.

In truth, the so-called Batman was Lance. Ten minutes earlier, after watching the big brute chase Gwen through the streets, Lance had guessed her injury from last night hadn't fully healed. Facing a second superpowered enemy now would be trouble for her.

Lance didn't hesitate. He teleported back home, swapped out his outfit, and used his cross-dressing ability to transform into a Batman lookalike. It was a last-minute decision, but he figured it would hide his identity well enough. By the time he returned, Gwen's opponent had doubled.

One was the musclehead from earlier, and the other was a lean, sharp-looking guy wearing a black leather jacket. That's when Lance decided to step in.

"Enough!" Harland shouted, glaring up at them. "Have you two talked enough? Do we look invisible to you?!"

Gwen smirked. "Yes. And it's pissing you off, isn't it?"

Lance shot her a curious look. He'd always heard that Peter Parker turned into a smartass when he put on the Spider suit. Apparently, Gwen had the same habit. Was it the spider bite that did this? Or maybe it was just the mask letting them drop their filters.

Shaking his head, Lance refocused. "Which one do you want?"

Gwen hesitated, glancing at her injured arm before making her choice. "I'll take the big idiot. You handle the skinny one."

"You rock on this one." Lance shrugged.

"I don't play fucking rock!" Harland snapped, his face twisting with anger.

"Don't call me an idiot!" The brute growled.

Neither Gwen nor Lance cared.

Harland's patience snapped. "I think you both need to get taught a lesson!" He rushed toward them, but before he could take more than a few steps, Lance vanished.

Reappearing behind Harland, Lance clapped a hand down on his shoulder. "Your opponent is me!"

Before Harland could react, Lance teleported him into the sky.

Meanwhile, Gwen shot webs at the big guy's face, blinding him long enough to launch herself forward using her webbing for momentum.

Boom!

Her kick landed square in his chest, launching him backward into a wall of bricks. Gwen's strength was enough to dent the structure, but as the dust settled, the big guy climbed back out of the rubble without a single scratch.

"You've got to be kidding me!" Gwen muttered, her hand instinctively going to her injured arm.

"No, look closer."

Lance's voice came from behind her as he returned to the scene, brushing dust off his gloves.

Gwen squinted at the brute and noticed it. His chest had caved in slightly—broken ribs.

"Broken rib?!" Gwen's eyes widened. "But his skin's completely fine!"

"Looks like his defense doesn't apply to the inside. His bones can't handle the impact."

"Great, so I just have to keep hitting him until his skeleton gives out?"

Lance shrugged. "Or I can just drop him from ten thousand meters like I did with the other guy."

"You killed him?" Gwen looked at him in disbelief.

"Maybe," Lance said with a smirk. "Maybe not."

Before Gwen could respond, the brute roared and charged again.

Lance smirked and cracked his knuckles. "Let's finish this."
