Chapter 5: Chapter 5: A Broken Promise
"Mother, Father, when did Misuki arrive? I didn't see her," Xhazam asked with growing concern.
His mother smiled softly. "She left yesterday to surprise you. She wanted to visit you in the city."
Xhazam froze, a feeling of unease washing over him. Misuki had not arrived, and something about her sudden disappearance felt wrong. Panic clawed at his chest as he rushed out of the house to search for her.
Hours passed as Xhazam combed the streets, asking anyone if they had seen her. Every answer was the same: no. His hope was starting to crumble when his phone buzzed.
It was Mithi, the barber who had given him a chance in the city. "Xhazam, where are you? You sound tense," Mithi asked, hearing the worry in Xhazam's voice.
"My wife is missing," Xhazam explained hurriedly. "She was supposed to meet me here but never arrived."
Mithi didn't hesitate. "Stay where you are. I'm closing my shop. Meet me at the local police station."
At the station, they spotted Pedro, sitting in a corner, his expression dark and brooding. Ignoring him, Xhazam and Mithi approached an officer to file a missing person report.
"My wife, Misuki, came from our village to visit me," Xhazam explained, his voice trembling. "But now she's missing. Please help me find her."
The officer stiffened, recognizing the story. It was the same young woman who had been killed just the day before. She had said she was here to meet her husband. But the officer dared not anger Pedro, who was notorious for his temper and power.
The officer leaned in and whispered the situation to Pedro, who clenched his fists in frustration. His lips twisted into a sinister smile as he realized the woman he had killed was connected to Xhazam.
"Send them home," Pedro commanded coldly. "Tell them we'll investigate. Make sure they leave."
The officer returned and delivered Pedro's lie. "We'll search for her, but it's best if you go home for now."
Xhazam and Mithi had no choice but to leave, but their search didn't end. They spent the entire day combing the city, looking for any sign of Misuki. By evening, hope was fading.
Then the phone rang. Xhazam answered, his hands trembling. A cold voice greeted him. "We've found a woman's body. It matches the description you gave."
"No… no, that can't be!" Xhazam cried out, refusing to believe it.
But his denial was shattered when they arrived at the scene. Misuki's lifeless body lay before them. Xhazam fell to his knees, sobbing uncontrollably, as Mithi held him, equally heartbroken.
Isabella, Mithi's daughter, was there too, her medical training allowing her to examine the body. "Xhazam, I don't think this was a robbery gone wrong," she said carefully. "There are no bruises or marks from a struggle. Look closely—these fingerprints suggest someone tried to force themselves on her. She likely bit her tongue and ended her own life rather than letting them win."
Xhazam felt his world collapse. Misuki had fought to the very end, resisting the horror that had befallen her.
Pedro, who had followed them to the scene, stepped forward with a smug expression. "Maybe she was just too beautiful. They couldn't resist her, and when she fought back…" He left the sentence hanging, his tone mocking.
Xhazam's blood boiled, but his grief overpowered his rage. He couldn't comprehend the cruelty of it all. Tears streamed down his face as he silently vowed: this isn't over. Whoever was responsible for this will pay.
The air was heavy with sorrow as Xhazam's family, along with Methi and his loved ones, arrived. They had come to say their final goodbyes to Misuki. Misuki's body had been taken back to the village for burial, where the atmosphere was thick with grief and sorrow. Misuki's parents and family were inconsolable, and even Xhazam, though silent, was crushed by the weight of what had happened. His mind kept replaying the tragic events, struggling to make sense of how everything had turned so wrong.
For the next few days, the world seemed to stand still. Xhazam could hardly think straight, his heart numb from the pain, the wound in Xhazam's heart was far from healed. His grief was compounded by the guilt he felt for not being there when she needed him the most. His family tried to comfort him, but their words felt hollow, unable to heal the wounds in his soul.
Methi joined Xhazam in the village. He tried to offer hope, though both knew there was little to find in the wake of such loss. Still, Methi's presence reminded Xhazam that he wasn't alone in this fight. Together, they tried to piece together the events leading to Misuki's tragic end.
For days, Xhazam sat idle in his room, his mind a whirlwind of emotions. Nothing made sense. How had Misuki, a vibrant and full of life woman, ended up a lifeless corpse? What had gone wrong in her visit to the city?
It was on the tenth day, while sitting alone in his room, that something clicked. A memory surfaced in his mind, an eerie moment that he had almost forgotten. Pedro. The last time Xhazam had been at the barber shop, he had overheard Pedro on the phone with someone. There was something off about the conversation. The tone of Pedro's voice was strange, unfamiliar, as though he was hiding something. And then, Pedro had mentioned a woman—one Xhazam didn't know at the time. But now, it all made sense. That woman had been Misuki.
Xhazam's blood ran cold as realization hit him like a slap across the face. Pedro had done this. Pedro was the one who had killed Misuki.
Determined to get to the truth, Xhazam set out for the city, his mind clouded with fury and pain. He knew he had to find the officer who worked under Pedro, the one who had been involved in Misuki's tragic fate.
When he found the officer, Xhazam didn't hesitate. In a fit of rage, he grabbed the officer by the collar, his grip tightening like a vice. "Tell me everything," Xhazam hissed through gritted teeth. "Or I swear, I will slit your throat right here." His voice was low, filled with an anger that could not be contained.
The officer, trembling in fear, could barely form words. His eyes widened in terror as he saw the fury in Xhazam's eyes. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the officer spoke, his voice shaky. "I— I didn't want to be involved, but Misuki… she came to the city looking for you. Pedro... he— he offered her a place to stay, told her it was for the night." The officer's voice faltered as he recalled the painful truth. "She never left. She was... killed."
Xhazam's hands trembled, but his rage only intensified. The officer continued, his voice barely audible. "I didn't know what to do. Pedro... he said it was for the best. She was never supposed to find out about us. About what he was doing."
The truth was like a knife to Xhazam's heart. He could feel his body shaking with rage. Without a second thought, he threw the officer against the wall, his fist slamming into the man's face. "You knew! You knew, and you didn't say anything!"
The officer groaned in pain but nodded, too terrified to speak further. Xhazam took a deep breath, trying to control his fury. "Keep this secret," he spat. "If anyone finds out about this, you're a dead man."
With that, Xhazam turned, leaving the officer in the dust, his heart set on one thing: revenge.
Pedro would pay for what he had done. No matter what it took.
