Chapter 115: Chapter 115: War (Part 2)
Tens of thousands of lightning bolts poured from the wands, converging to illuminate half the sky.
In an instant, the insects fell like rain.
"What terrifying elemental power, the white wizard army's joint casting is truly..." Richard exclaimed in awe.
The white wizard army's spellcasting was so close that the elemental turbulence caused by their power even disrupted the sky, and Richard could feel the elemental chaos from within the war airship.
"If it weren't this powerful, the white wizards wouldn't hold the main battlefield," Ellie chimed in, understanding the situation better as an evocation wizard.
"We're facing the enemy of an entire world."
In a short time, the reformed white wizard army stabilized their position, decimating the approaching Moth Legion. However, due to the proximity of the casting, all white wizards outside the war airships had to activate magic barriers to counter the elemental turbulence.
Meanwhile, witnessing the formidable power of the white wizard army, the Black Crystal Insectoids launched a new counterattack.
"Activate the Mother God Cannon!"
A command from the High Priest was quickly relayed to a corner of the insect horde.
Upon receiving the order, the Black Crystal Insectoids extracted a mass of green mucus-laden flesh from their bodies, gathering it together. In moments, a four-meter-wide pile of flesh formed.
Two priest insects bowed to the sky, then entered the mass, which began to mutate.
Black crystals emerged within the flesh, a layer of brown chitin spreading across its surface. Moments later, the top of the flesh mass split open like a mouth.
A warrior insect severed its own arms, handing them to its comrades before diving into the maw.
Gurgle, gurgle...
The sound of churning liquid emanated from the flesh heap, and a meter-wide green acid ball, crackling with energy, was launched skyward.
Bang! Sizzle...
The acid ball struck a white wizard, instantly shattering his magical shield. The viscous acid drenched the wizard, dissolving him into a pool of slime in the blink of an eye. Nearby wizards, splashed by the acid, saw their magical barriers rapidly dim.
"Maintain defenses! Enemy strategic weapon detected!"
The white wizard commander issued a warning through the mental network, prompting the army to adjust formations again. Groups of white wizards formed small formations, using thicker magical shields to counter the Black Crystal Insectoids' Mother God Cannon.
Simultaneously, the command center issued an order.
"Attention all black wizards! Attention all black wizards! Enemy strategic weapon detected. Enemy strategic weapon detected.
In thirty seconds, all black wizards enter the battlefield. Target the strategic weapon! Repeat, in thirty seconds, all black wizards enter the battlefield. Target the strategic weapon!"
Hearing the command from the communication crystal ball, Richard donned his cloak's hood, igniting the black flames on his Greatsword of Mana Devourer.
"Ellie, stay safe, don't die!"
Ellie gripped her staff, smiling slightly.
"You too. I plan on spending ten thousand years with you."
The command center's cold voice echoed from the communication crystal ball.
"Black wizards, prepare for deployment!"
With a hum, the war airship's floor began to open slowly, the sound of mechanical grinding filling Richard's ears. Simultaneously, the white wizard army provided spell support, ensuring a safe deployment environment for the black wizards.
Gazing at the sea of insects below, Richard grabbed his golem, took a deep breath, and activated his magic barrier.
"Deploy decoys! All black wizards will deploy in three seconds!"
Richard watched as several small alchemical devices were released from the airship, drawing enemy fire from the ground.
"Three... two... one, deploy!"
In the next moment, the hatches of a hundred war airships opened simultaneously, releasing tens of thousands of black figures that plummeted earthward, their magic barriers sparking with fire from air friction.
From the ground, it looked like tens of thousands of meteors crashing down.
Acid projectiles and primitive spells from the insect horde bombarded the sky, forcing black wizards to adjust their landing points to evade attacks. Those unfortunate enough to be hit by acid balls dissolved on the spot.
With a thud, Richard landed safely, immediately setting his golem to guard mode.
Thanks to the white wizard army's spell bombardment, the area around Richard was cleared of Black Crystal Insectoids, leaving only charred black limbs and foul-smelling green slime—a few maimed survivors struggled feebly.
"All members of Black Wizard Battalion 35, heed my command!"
A voice called from behind Richard. Turning, he saw a black-robed wizard, half his body ablaze with black fire, shouting at a communication crystal ball. It was Wakaba, the black wizard leader of Richard's war airship.
"Our target is the Black Crystal Insectoid strategic weapon. All members of Battalion 35, advance toward the nearest strategic weapon! Destroy enemy strategic weapons at all costs!"
Having issued the command, Wakaba glanced at Richard.
"Welcome to the battlefield, kid."
With that, he charged alone toward the nearest strategic weapon.
Unlike the white wizards, black wizards did not fight in formations; they thrived on solo missions.
Richard said nothing, gripping his sword and flying after Wakaba toward the nearest strategic weapon.
Boom! Boom! Boom...
The sound of spells exploding was unending. With air superiority, the white wizard army rained spells on the Black Crystal Insectoid horde indiscriminately.
Boom!
A fireball exploded nearby, severing several warrior insects caught in its blast.
Thanks to the slave army's cover, the insect horde, though aware of the descending wizards, couldn't immediately respond.
This allowed Richard's advance to proceed smoothly.
Boom!
A fireball erupted, the elemental flames tearing a nearby warrior insect apart.
As an alchemical wizard, Richard's proficiency in evocation spells was average; aside from the Heart of Annihilation, his other spells were only slightly above the wizard community's average.
Yet even so, his fireball spell, boasting 400 energy levels, was more than enough to obliterate these first-tier Black Crystal Insectoids.
While slaughtering, Richard collected data on the insects.
Though the command center provided suggestions, they were merely others' opinions. As a wizard, one must form their own judgments.
He picked up a warrior insect's severed limb—resembling a scythe. The tough chitin could, driven by muscle, easily slice through bone and stone.
As Jolord's student, Richard had some expertise in muscle structure. The Black Crystal Insectoids' musculature was unique; their forelimbs weren't suited for prolonged activity but excelled in explosive power.
A mature first-tier warrior insect could easily deliver 300 energy-level cutting damage with a burst of force.
This might not seem much compared to wizards reliant on intellect, but within the slave army, this power was considered above average.
"Looks like the dean is about to gain a slave world," Richard mused, storing the limb in his magic pouch.
The wizard civilization classified conquered worlds into three types: resource worlds, slave worlds, and research worlds.
Resource worlds contained abundant magic stones or alchemical materials, favored by Grand Wizards. Conquering such worlds meant immense wealth for the Grand Wizard.
Next were slave worlds, which provided Grand Wizards with war slaves, i.e., slave armies. Unlike resource worlds, Grand Wizards wouldn't strip these worlds bare but would regularly collect "blood tax" from the indigenous species to bolster the slave armies.
Such worlds were rare, with only a few qualifying as slave worlds.
Lastly were research worlds, typically lacking in resources and weak in species. Their sole purpose was to offer knowledge to wizards, making them the least desirable to Grand Wizards.
Encountering such a world meant minimal gains at best, and significant losses at worst, as Grand Wizards might have to invest considerable magic stones.
After all, hiring freelance wizards, maintaining the white wizard army, and renting the Floating City were substantial expenses.
The insect strength of this Hive World was promising, and rumor had it that Grand Wizard Black Tower lacked a slave world. This expedition seemed poised to enrich him greatly.
...
The black wizards' arrival altered the battlefield dynamics. Thanks to the priest insects, the Black Crystal Insectoids' main camp received constant reports of breached lines.
From above, the Black Crystal Insectoid sea appeared pierced by numerous "spikes."
These "spikes" resulted from the black wizards' advances.
In the main camp, the gold-ringed High Priest communicated with the other priests using his antennae.
"Deploy the Mother Insect Guards to eliminate these invaders from the sky!"
"Agreed."
"Agreed."
...
Within the insect horde, Richard continued his advance, aided by the slave army and spells, proceeding smoothly.
But as he relaxed, a sudden chill ran through him, prompting a swift step back.
A golden blade flashed past, slicing through Richard's magic barrier with ease. Had he hesitated a moment longer, he would have lost his head.
"What was that!"
Richard unleashed his mental power, scrutinizing his surroundings within fifty meters.
His search quickly revealed the golden blade's owner—a warrior insect adorned with golden markings.
"A new insect!"
Richard was startled; the Black Crystal Insectoids' response was remarkably swift. From their landing to now, barely three hours had passed. In such a short time, they had relayed information, made decisions, deployed troops, and had them cross millions of insects to target the invaders.
Their logistical prowess was nearing that of the wizards.
Sensing Richard's probing, the golden-marked warrior insect bowed slightly, its scythe arms glowing faintly gold.
"Extraterrestrial invader, today your head will honor the Mother Insect God!"
