Veilbound: The Hidden Pact

Chapter 3: Into the Fire

The shimmering portal swallowed Kai whole. For a moment, he felt as though he was falling through endless space, his stomach twisting in knots. When the world finally stabilized, he landed hard on solid ground, the impact jolting through his knees. Gasping, he pressed his hands to the ground, trying to orient himself.

When he looked up, the world was nothing like what he'd left behind. Towering black rocks surrounded him, their jagged edges glowing faintly with pulsing veins of energy. The air shimmered with heat, and the sky above was a swirling vortex of gray and green, streaked with silent flashes of lightning. The oppressive silence was broken only by the faint hum of the molten streams snaking through the ground like rivers of fire.

"Where the hell are we?" Kai managed, his voice raw and hoarse.

Ignis stood a few feet ahead, his crimson hair catching the eerie glow from the molten streams. He didn't look back as he surveyed their surroundings, his expression sharp. "The Veil," he said simply. "A pocket realm between your world and mine. This one's been abandoned for decades, but it'll hide us—for now."

Kai staggered to his feet, the package still clutched tightly against his chest. It felt warm, heavier than before, and the faint pulse of magic emanating from it only made his nerves worse. "Hide us from what? That thing in the alley? Or is there something worse I need to worry about now?"

Ignis finally turned, his golden eyes gleaming like molten metal. "Everything."

Kai bristled at the cryptic answer. "You're really bad at this whole 'reassurance' thing, you know that?"

"Do you want reassurance or survival?" Ignis shot back, his tone sharp. "Because right now, you don't get both."

Kai opened his mouth for a retort but froze when the ground beneath him trembled. He glanced down, his pulse racing. The faint hum he'd noticed earlier grew louder, vibrating through the soles of his shoes.

Ignis frowned, crouching and placing a hand on the ground. "The energy from the fragment is unstable. It's leaking into the Veil." He stood abruptly, his expression grim. "We need to move. This place won't hold for long."

"Move where?" Kai demanded, gesturing to the jagged rocks that seemed to cage them in. "It's not like we can just—"

Before he could finish, Ignis raised a hand, and the air shimmered. The jagged rocks began to crack, pieces floating upward as if pulled by an invisible force. Kai stumbled back as the ground split open, revealing a narrow path leading deeper into the glowing terrain.

"Follow me," Ignis commanded, already striding forward.

Kai hesitated, glancing back at the swirling portal that had closed behind them. "I can't believe I'm doing this," he muttered before jogging after Ignis, the heat of the molten streams making him sweat.

As they walked, Kai struggled to keep up, his thoughts racing. The weight of Ignis's earlier words—"the bond"—pressed down on him like a stone. He looked down at the package again, its seals cracked and faintly glowing. "Okay, seriously, what is this thing?"

Ignis didn't stop walking. "A fragment of leyline energy. Pure magic, raw and unfiltered. It was never meant for human hands."

"Great," Kai said, his voice rising in frustration. "So why do I have it? Why are we bonded? What does that even mean?"

Ignis finally stopped, turning to face him. His expression was unreadable, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes—regret, maybe. "The bond is rare. Sacred. It hasn't happened between a human and a beast in centuries. When it does, it ties their fates together. Your life is now tied to mine. If you die, I die. And if I die..."

"Let me guess," Kai said, crossing his arms. "I die too."

Ignis nodded. "Exactly."

Kai's stomach churned. "This can't be real. There has to be a way to undo it."

"There isn't," Ignis said bluntly. "The bond is permanent. And it's not just a nuisance. It's a target. Every clan in Arcanova will know about it soon, if they don't already. They'll come for you, either to kill you or use you against me."

Kai took an involuntary step back, the heat of the molten streams forgotten. "Why? What's so important about this bond?"

Ignis hesitated, his jaw tightening. "Because it's forbidden. The last time a human and beast shared a bond, it nearly destroyed the world."

The weight of his words pressed on Kai's chest like a vise. He looked down at the glowing package, his mind spinning. "So what do we do now?"

Ignis's golden eyes burned brighter, his voice cold and steady. "We survive."

The ground trembled again, but this time it wasn't the fragment's energy. A low growl echoed through the air, followed by the sound of shifting stone. Ignis stiffened, his body tensing like a predator ready to strike.

"We've been found," he said, his voice low.

Kai's breath hitched. "Found by who?"

Before Ignis could answer, shadows began to move at the edge of the glowing terrain. Figures emerged, their forms shifting unnaturally, eyes glowing faintly like embers. Their movements were fluid yet predatory, and Kai could feel the air grow heavier with every step they took.

Ignis stepped in front of him, his body radiating heat. "Stay behind me. Don't do anything stupid."

Kai clutched the package tighter, his pulse pounding in his ears. "Define 'stupid.'"

Ignis didn't respond. Instead, he raised his hand, and the air around him shimmered with heat. The shadows moved closer, their growls growing louder, and Kai realized with a sinking feeling that this was only the beginning.
