Chapter 2: The Bond is Formed
Kai's stomach churned as the world around him spun into a blur of light and shadows. He barely had time to yell before they landed hard on solid ground, his knees buckling under the sudden impact. He collapsed, gasping for air, the taste of copper on his tongue. The sensation of being yanked through whatever that was still clung to him, like a bad dream that wouldn't let go.
"Get up," the crimson-haired man barked, his golden eyes scanning the area with sharp intensity.
Kai groaned, pushing himself upright. The rain was gone, replaced by a humid stillness that hung heavy in the air. He blinked, trying to get his bearings. They were no longer in the warehouse. Surrounding them were jagged black rocks that seemed to hum faintly, glowing veins of energy running through them like arteries. Overhead, the sky was a swirling vortex of gray and green, lightning flashing silently within the clouds.
"Where... are we?" Kai managed, still clutching the now-quiet package to his chest.
"The Veil," the man said, his voice low. He crouched, pressing a hand to the ground as if listening to something Kai couldn't hear. "A pocket realm between the human world and the domain of mythical beasts. We're safe for now."
Kai's heart pounded. The Veil? Pocket realms? He wasn't ready for this. He looked down at the package, its once-glowing seals now cracked and inert. "Safe? You call this safe? What the hell just happened back there? And why does this thing feel like it's going to explode?"
The man stood, his golden eyes locking onto Kai with a cold intensity. "You bonded with it."
"Bonded with—what does that even mean?" Kai snapped. He was getting sick of this cryptic nonsense. "Who even are you?"
The man's expression softened, just slightly. "Ignis. Prince of the Fire Dragon Clan. Or I was, before your little accident made everything worse."
Kai frowned. "Dragon? Like... wings and fire?"
Ignis's lips twitched in what might have been a smirk. "More than that. But yes, if that helps your tiny human brain grasp the concept."
Kai took a step back, his instincts screaming at him to run. But there was nowhere to go. The strange rocks encircled them like a cage, and the air itself felt charged with an energy he couldn't understand. "Okay, fine, let's say I believe you. Why am I involved in this? I was just doing a delivery."
Ignis folded his arms, his golden eyes narrowing. "That package contains a fragment of leyline energy—pure, unfiltered magic. It was supposed to be a tool, a way to tip the scales in a conflict you can't begin to comprehend. But now... it's bonded to you. And to me."
Kai blinked. "Bonded? What does that mean?"
"It means we're connected, human," Ignis said, his tone sharp. "Your life is tied to mine now. If you die, I die. And if I die... well, you probably won't last long without me."
The words hit Kai like a punch to the gut. He stumbled back, shaking his head. "No. No, that's insane. I didn't agree to this!"
Ignis rolled his eyes. "Do you think I wanted this? I was exiled from my clan, hunted by enforcers, and now I have to babysit a fragile human who doesn't even know what he's holding."
Kai bristled at the insult but bit his tongue. He looked down at the package in his hands. It felt different now, heavier somehow, as if the energy inside had shifted. "So... what do we do? Can't we just, I don't know, un-bond?"
Ignis laughed, a sharp, humorless sound. "Un-bond? You think this is some magic trick you can undo with a snap of your fingers? No, human. The bond is permanent. And it's not just a nuisance—it's a target. Every clan in Arcanova will be after us now. They'll kill you to get to me, or they'll kill me to weaken you."
Kai's mouth went dry. "Why? What's so special about this bond?"
Ignis hesitated, his gaze flickering to the ground. For a moment, his confidence faltered. "Because it's forbidden. No human and beast have shared a life bond in centuries. And the last time it happened... it nearly destroyed the world."
The words hung heavy in the air, sinking into Kai's chest like lead. He swallowed hard, trying to keep his voice steady. "So what happens now? What do we do?"
Ignis straightened, his expression hardening once more. "We survive. That's the first step. I need to figure out how to deal with this mess, and you need to stay alive long enough to not make it worse."
Kai glared at him. "You're a real ray of sunshine, you know that?"
Ignis ignored the comment, turning toward the jagged rocks surrounding them. He raised a hand, and the air around him shimmered. The rocks began to crack, fragments floating upward as if weightless. "We're leaving. The Veil won't protect us forever."
Kai hesitated. The idea of stepping back into the world where monsters and magic hunted him wasn't exactly appealing. But staying here wasn't an option either. He adjusted the strap of his messenger bag, his grip tightening on the package. "Fine. Lead the way, dragon boy."
Ignis snorted, but there was a glimmer of amusement in his eyes. "Try to keep up, human."
With a wave of his hand, the air in front of them split open, revealing a shimmering portal. Kai took a deep breath and stepped forward, his heart pounding as he followed Ignis into the unknown.
