Chapter 24: Cracks in the Line
Kael's chest heaved as the Shade's glowing red eyes locked onto him. The creature's towering form loomed just beyond the group's defensive line, its jagged frame pulsing faintly with shadowy energy. Around him, the recruits stood tense, their weapons raised but their movements sluggish.
The battlefield was a mess of uneven ground, scorched debris, and faint wisps of smoke from earlier fights. The Conduit Nexus pulsed faintly behind them, its hum steady but fragile against the oppressive presence of the Shade.
"Allara!" Kael shouted, his voice straining against the growing tension. "We need to use the Nexus!"
Allara deflected another swipe of the Shade's claws, her movements sharp despite the weariness etched across her face. "You think it'll destabilize it?"
"It's our best shot!" Kael replied, darting forward to strike at the creature's flank. His dagger sparked as it connected, lightning crackling weakly across the Shade's surface before fizzling out. The creature barely flinched, turning its glowing eyes toward him with a low snarl.
"Fine," Allara said, her voice tight. "Evan!"
Evan glanced toward them, his sword blazing as he deflected a powerful strike from the Shade. "What is it?"
"New plan!" Allara shouted, her blade flashing as she aimed for the creature's leg. "We need to drive it closer to the Nexus!"
Evan hesitated for only a moment, his jaw tightening. "All right! Everyone, adjust formation! Push it back!"
The recruits shifted quickly, forming a loose semicircle around the Shade. Their Sparks flickered weakly, but there was a new urgency in their movements. Kael darted to the right, his boots skidding on the uneven ground as he positioned himself near the creature's flank.
The Shade let out a guttural hiss, its jagged frame pulsing faintly as it turned its glowing eyes toward the group.
Kael's stomach twisted as he watched it move. The Shade wasn't attacking recklessly—it was testing them, probing for weaknesses. Its intelligence was clear in the way it shifted its focus, targeting the recruits who looked the most vulnerable.
"Keep it distracted!" Evan shouted, stepping forward to draw the creature's attention. His golden blade flared brightly as he struck the Shade's side, leaving a faint scar along its shifting surface.
The creature hissed, its claws sweeping toward him in a wide arc. Evan ducked low, the claws whistling past his head as he rolled to the side.
"Allara, Kael, now!" Evan barked.
Kael surged forward, his dagger sparking faintly as he aimed for the Shade's exposed flank. The blade struck true, the lightning crackling along its surface and leaving a faint scorch mark.
The Shade turned sharply, its claws slicing through the air as Kael scrambled back. The strike narrowly missed him, the force of it sending debris flying across the battlefield.
Allara followed up with a precise slash to the creature's leg, her blade glowing brightly as it connected. The energy flared, forcing the Shade to stagger slightly.
"We've got its attention!" Kael shouted, his heart racing. "Keep it moving!"
The recruits pressed their attacks, their weapons glowing faintly as they struck at the creature from all sides. The Shade's movements grew sharper, its claws lashing out in wide arcs to force them back.
Kael ducked behind a jagged boulder, his breaths coming fast and shallow. The relic fragment in his chest pulsed faintly, its rhythm syncing with the hum of the Nexus behind him.
He peeked around the edge of the rock, his eyes narrowing as he watched the Shade. Its movements were deliberate, its attacks calculated. It wasn't just strong—it was toying with them.
"Allara," Kael called, glancing toward her. "We need to stop reacting to it!"
She turned to him, her expression tight. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"It's picking us apart," Kael said, his voice rising. "We're playing into its hands."
Her eyes flicked toward the Shade, then back to Kael. "You've got an idea?"
Kael nodded, his grip tightening on his dagger. "If we can focus its attention on one person, the rest of us can strike its weak points. But we have to be coordinated."
Evan overheard the exchange and stepped closer, his sword blazing faintly. "Kael's right," he said, his tone sharp. "We need to be deliberate. I'll draw its focus—everyone else, aim for the legs or the core."
"Evan, you're already pushing it!" Allara said, her brow furrowing.
"I can handle it," Evan replied firmly. "Just do your part."
Kael hesitated but nodded, moving back into position. His Spark crackled faintly along his dagger as he steadied his breathing.
"On my mark!" Evan shouted, raising his sword.
The Shade lunged again, its claws carving deep gouges into the ground as it charged toward Evan. The golden light of his blade flared as he met the creature head-on, deflecting its strike with a sharp, ringing clash.
"Now!" Evan barked.
Kael darted forward, his dagger sparking as he aimed for the creature's legs. The blade struck, the lightning flaring brightly as the Shade staggered slightly. Allara followed up with a precise strike to its side, her blade leaving a faint trail of glowing energy.
The recruits moved in tandem, their attacks coordinated and deliberate. The Shade roared, its jagged frame convulsing as it lashed out in all directions.
Kael barely managed to dodge the creature's claws, the strike passing inches from his chest. He stumbled back, his heart pounding as he tried to regain his footing.
"It's working!" Allara shouted, a flicker of hope in her voice.
The Shade staggered closer to the Nexus, its movements growing more erratic. The glowing energy from the pillar pulsed brighter, casting long shadows across the battlefield.
But the Shade wasn't done yet.
It let out a deafening roar, its claws slamming into the ground with enough force to send shockwaves rippling outward. Several recruits were thrown off their feet, their weapons clattering to the ground.
Kael hit the ground hard, the impact jarring his shoulder as he struggled to push himself up. The air felt heavier now, the hum of the Nexus growing louder as the Shade's glowing eyes locked onto him.
The creature lunged, its claws cutting through the air with terrifying speed.
"Kael, move!" Allara shouted, her voice sharp.
Kael rolled to the side just as the claws struck the ground where he'd been lying. Debris flew into the air, and Kael coughed as dust filled his lungs.
The Shade was relentless, its strikes coming faster and harder as it closed in.
The recruits scrambled to regroup, their exhaustion evident in every movement. Evan stepped forward again, his sword blazing brightly as he met the Shade's next attack.
"Stay together!" he shouted, his voice strained. "We're not done yet!"
Kael forced himself to his feet, his body trembling as he raised his dagger again.
The Shade was nearing the Nexus now, its jagged frame pulsing faintly with energy. Kael's mind raced as he tried to think of their next move.
They had pushed it this far.
Now, they just had to finish it.
