Veil of Sparks

Chapter 23: The Shadow Approaches

The battlefield was deathly silent.

Kael stood near the Conduit Nexus, the glowing energy pillar casting faint blue and gold light across the scorched ground. His dagger felt heavy in his hand, the faint crackle of his Spark barely masking the tremor in his grip. Around him, the other recruits were regrouping, forming a loose defensive line around the Nexus.

The earlier waves had left them drained. Sparks flickered weakly, weapons hung low, and armor bore the marks of countless scrapes and near-misses. Kael could feel the tension radiating from the others—the quiet dread that came with knowing this wasn't over.

He glanced at Allara, who stood a few paces to his left. Her braid was coming undone, strands of hair plastered to her face. She was gripping her blade tightly, her knuckles pale, but her eyes were sharp, focused.

"You still standing?" Kael asked quietly, his voice hoarse.

Allara nodded, managing a weak smile. "Barely. You?"

Kael rolled his shoulder, trying to shake off the ache in his arm. "Let's just say I'm running on fumes."

Her smile widened slightly, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Well, keep those fumes burning. I think we're going to need them."

The shadows beyond the Nexus began to shift, the air growing heavier with every passing second.

Kael straightened, his heart pounding in his chest. The shadows coiled and writhed like living things, a formless mass of darkness that seemed to swallow the faint light around it. The hum of the Nexus felt quieter now, distant and fragile compared to the oppressive weight building in the air.

A low, guttural hiss broke the silence, the sound deep and resonant. It vibrated through Kael's chest, sending a chill down his spine.

And then it emerged.

The Shade stepped into view, its form massive and unnaturally jagged. Its body was a fusion of solid and shifting darkness, the edges of its frame flickering like a flame caught in the wind. The surface of the creature shimmered faintly, reflecting the Nexus's light in distorted patterns that made it hard to focus on.

Its limbs were long and angular, ending in claws that gleamed like obsidian. The claws scraped against the ground as it moved, leaving faint trails of scorched earth in its wake. Its torso was broad and hunched, its chest marked by a faint, pulsing core of red light—like a heartbeat, slow and steady.

But its eyes were the most unsettling.

Two glowing red orbs burned in the center of its angular head, unblinking and predatory. They scanned the group with a terrifying focus, like a predator sizing up its prey.

The Shade stopped just beyond their defensive line, its towering frame casting a long shadow over the recruits. For a moment, it stood still, its head tilting slightly as though studying them.

Kael's mouth went dry as he stared at the creature. He had seen Shades before in the game, but seeing one in person was something else entirely. Its presence was suffocating, a palpable force that pressed down on him like a weight.

"All right, everyone, listen up!" Evan's voice rang out, sharp and commanding. He stepped forward, his sword gleaming faintly in the Nexus's glow. "This is it—the final wave. We've fought Shades before. They're strong, but they have limits. Stay together, watch each other's backs, and don't give it an opening!"

The recruits shifted uneasily, their weapons rising as they prepared for the fight. Kael glanced at Allara, who gave him a small nod before stepping into position.

"It's just a bigger target," Allara said, her voice quieter now. "We've got this."

Kael nodded, though his chest tightened. He adjusted his grip on his dagger, his Spark flickering weakly along the blade.

The Shade tilted its head again, the motion almost curious. And then it moved.

The Shade's first attack was sudden, its speed belying its massive frame. It lunged forward, its claws sweeping through the air with a low hiss.

Kael barely had time to react, diving to the side as the claws tore through the ground where he had been standing. The impact sent a shockwave rippling through the earth, knocking several recruits off balance.

"Spread out!" Evan shouted, his sword blazing as he stepped forward.

Kael scrambled to his feet, his chest heaving as he repositioned himself. The Shade's glowing eyes followed the group's movements, its claws flexing as it prepared for another attack.

The creature lunged again, this time toward a recruit with a spear. The boy's eyes widened, and he stumbled back, barely managing to block the strike with the shaft of his weapon. The force of the impact sent him sprawling, his spear clattering to the ground.

"Get up!" Evan barked, stepping in to intercept the Shade's next attack. His sword flashed as he struck the creature's side, the golden energy sparking against its dark surface.

The Shade hissed, recoiling slightly, but the glow in its eyes burned brighter.

Kael darted to the right, his mind racing. The Shade wasn't just attacking—it was testing them. Its movements were calculated, its strikes precise.

"Allara!" Kael called, his voice tight. "It's not going to let us wear it down like the others!"

"I know!" she shouted back, deflecting a strike with her glowing blade. "We need to keep it moving!"

Evan's voice cut through the chaos. "Shift positions! Don't give it a chance to focus on one of us!"

The recruits began to move, spreading out into a loose circle around the Shade. Kael adjusted his stance, his dagger sparking faintly as he watched the creature closely.

The Shade turned its head toward Kael, its glowing eyes narrowing.

Kael's pulse quickened as the creature lunged, its claws cutting through the air with terrifying speed. He ducked low, the claws passing inches above his head as he rolled to the side.

The Shade's claws struck the ground, sending a burst of debris into the air. Kael staggered, his legs trembling as he scrambled to regain his footing.

"Kael, move!" Allara shouted, her blade flashing as she struck the creature's side.

The Shade hissed, turning toward her with a swipe of its massive arm. Allara ducked under the attack, her movements sharp but strained.

Kael darted forward, aiming for the Shade's exposed flank. His dagger struck the creature's side, the lightning sparking faintly along its surface.

The Shade hissed again, recoiling slightly, but the attack barely seemed to faze it.

The recruits pressed the attack, their Sparks flaring weakly as they struck at the creature from all sides.

Evan delivered a powerful strike to the Shade's chest, the golden light of his sword flaring brightly. The creature staggered, but its glowing eyes burned brighter as it lashed out in all directions, forcing the recruits to retreat.

Kael's chest heaved as he repositioned himself, his mind racing. The Shade was too strong for them to take down with brute force alone.

"We need a plan," Kael muttered, his gaze flicking to the glowing Nexus behind them.

The relic fragment in his chest pulsed faintly, its rhythm syncing with the hum of the Nexus. Kael's eyes narrowed as an idea began to form.

"Allara," he said, his voice urgent. "I think we can use the Nexus."

Allara glanced at him, her expression sharp. "You'd better explain fast."

Kael swallowed hard, his chest tightening as the Shade's glowing eyes locked onto him again.

"Just trust me," he said.
