Urban Powers After the Apocalypse

Chapter 9: The Release of Fear

Xu Mo almost instantly recognized the pistol in his hand, a famous model from CS:GO.

But why a pistol this time? Could it be that the appearance of these beads is entirely random? Or perhaps there are different types of beads depending on their color?

He pushed those thoughts aside, quickly realizing that this pistol seemed slightly different.

While it appeared identical to the images he'd seen before, the weight was surprisingly light—only a few hundred grams at most. Even though there was a magazine on the gun, it couldn't be removed. It seemed as if the magazine and the rest of the gun were fused into one piece.

The most astonishing part was that, just like with the blue light dot earlier, the moment Xu Mo held the pistol, he felt a strange, almost blood-connection to it. It no longer felt like a cold weapon, but as if it had become a part of his own body. He could even feel the slightest tremor of every piece of the gun as if it was part of his own senses.

With the pistol in hand, Xu Mo felt a little more stable. Though he had never actually fired a gun before, the mere presence of it gave him an immense sense of security.

"Damn it! They want me to kill again? I still can't wash the blood off my hands from last time… Eh? What are you…"

Monkey, swinging a butterfly knife, kicked the wobbly wooden door open, only to find Xu Mo standing there, free of the ropes that had bound him. He blinked in surprise, but before he could react, a dark barrel of a gun appeared in front of him.

"Ah! You…"

Monkey was less than five meters away from Xu Mo, and there was no time to dodge. With a sharp gunshot, blood sprayed out from his back as his thin body flew almost a meter backward before crashing to the ground. His face remained frozen in disbelief as life left him.

"I... I killed someone?"

Xu Mo was just an ordinary high school student. He had never killed anything before—not even a chicken. If it hadn't been for the glint of the butterfly knife in Monkey's hand, he might not have even pulled the trigger in time. He probably wouldn't have fired until the knife had already buried itself in his body.

Staring at the lifeless body, Xu Mo's face turned pale, his hands trembling so much that he almost dropped the pistol. If not for the wall being right next to him, he might not have been able to stay upright.

If he could, Xu Mo would have gladly fainted, never to wake up. But he knew the situation left him no choice. He clenched his teeth, using the pain from biting his tongue to force himself to keep going.

"What was that? What was that sound…? Eh? Monkey, what are you doing lying here?"

Two men, still unaware of the situation, dropped their playing cards and rushed over. One of them tried to help Monkey up from the ground.

Bang! Bang!

Having already killed one, Xu Mo made up his mind. He treated these people like NPCs in a game. Relying on the fact that they had no weapons, he rushed out of the shack and fired three shots in quick succession. One man was instantly shot in the head, his brain matter splattering everywhere, while the other was shot twice, once in the stomach and once in the leg, collapsing in a pool of blood.

"Damn it! He's got a gun!"

The two men who had been playing cards quickly arrived, seeing Xu Mo covered in blood, like a "god of death." Although they had no idea how Xu Mo had gotten a gun, their survival instincts kicked in. Without hesitation, they flipped the card table and scrambled to find cover, crawling in every direction.

If these men had been trained terrorists, Xu Mo might have been overwhelmed by the pressure and collapsed. But these were just thugs with no real beliefs other than money, and now that Xu Mo had the upper hand, they could only flee.

When faced with extreme fear, the best way for humans to release their emotions—aside from sex—is through violence.

Xu Mo was living proof of this, and now that he was deep in the frenzy of killing, he had no intention of letting the remaining thugs get away. He fired three more shots, blowing one of them into pieces before kicking an empty gasoline barrel aside and charging toward the other.

The second man, terrified, didn't even notice the uneven concrete steps in front of him. He tripped and fell before he could get far, and as he struggled to get up, he felt something cold and hard press against the back of his head.

"B-Boss! Please, spare me!" he stammered, his knees giving way, and he fell to the ground in fear.

Bang!

There was no second chance under Xu Mo's gun.

Suddenly, the sound of rapid footsteps came from behind him. Xu Mo spun around, aiming the gun at the shadow rushing toward him, and without hesitation, he pulled the trigger.

Clink! Clink!

Two strange metallic clinks sounded as the person who had tried to sneak up on him was knocked back by the force of Xu Mo's shots. The person was none other than Black Wolf, the last of the gang members to enter the building.

But Black Wolf's right hand had been covered with what looked like a red shell armor, and between the gaps of the armor, faint blue and white flames flickered out, like the hands of a demon from myth. Even more unnerving, the palm of his hand emitted two faint wisps of smoke, clearly having blocked the bullets.

What... What is this? Xu Mo snapped out of his killing frenzy and momentarily stopped firing.

The impact of the two close-range bullets would have been hard for any human to bear, but Black Wolf's armored hand trembled slightly as he stared in shock at Xu Mo's pistol, exclaiming, "No bullet casings or heads? This isn't an ordinary gun… Could it be another 'Doom Fragment'?"

"Doom Fragment? I don't know! I… I just want to get out of here!" Xu Mo, although nervous, felt an overwhelming sense of threat from Black Wolf's hand. He slowly started backing away, raising the pistol in both hands. Only by putting distance between himself and Black Wolf did he feel a small sense of safety.

"If all you have is a regular gun, I might have let you go. But since you have a Doom Fragment, I'll have to make sure you never leave here!" Black Wolf declared. With one hand, he grabbed an empty gasoline barrel, lifting it as easily as if it were a paper lantern, and began advancing toward Xu Mo.

"Don't come any closer! I will shoot!" Xu Mo, cornered, gritted his teeth and squeezed the trigger again.

But Black Wolf was too close, only a few meters away. Just as Xu Mo's finger twitched on the trigger, the gasoline barrel came crashing toward him. In an attempt to avoid it, Xu Mo's aim shifted, and though the bullet pierced the barrel, Black Wolf was no longer in sight.

A blur of red light trailing blue and white sparks suddenly appeared in Xu Mo's peripheral vision. Panic surged through him, and not knowing how to avoid the attack, he dove to the ground and rolled just in time to avoid the deadly punch. Black Wolf's punch crashed into the wall behind him, sending bricks flying and leaving a deep crater in the concrete, a testament to the force of the strike.

Black Wolf's relentless pursuit kept Xu Mo from fully getting up. He could only crawl, dodging Black Wolf's vicious attacks behind the scattered machines and debris. In this chaos, he had no time to aim and fire. Meanwhile, Black Wolf was like an unstoppable killing machine, his monstrous right hand smashing through everything in its path. Only thick steel plates could stop the brutal force of Black Wolf's blows.
