Urban Powers After the Apocalypse

Chapter 10: A Turn of Events

In the blink of an eye, the two had chased and fled across most of the factory area. Just a few more meters, and they would reach an open area with no cover to hide behind. Once the obstacles were gone, Xu Mo had no doubt that Black Wolf would immediately turn him into a pile of mush with a flurry of punches. Therefore, his only chance to survive was to strike Black Wolf with a fatal blow before reaching this open space.

But before that, he had to find a way to stop Black Wolf's attacks.

Xu Mo's eyes scanned the surroundings quickly, and suddenly, a thought struck him. He rolled on the ground and dashed toward a large machine on his right.

"You little brat, stand still and don't move! In the name of the Doom Fragment, I'll make it quick for you! If I catch you, I'll show you what true suffering is!"

Black Wolf had been in many direct battles before, but he'd never encountered a target that didn't fight back. The constant running away was the first time he had to endure such frustration. This game of chase was beginning to make him feel like he might choke on his own rage. Just when he was about to lose patience, he suddenly saw Xu Mo dart into a U-shaped corner of a large machine. Black Wolf's heart leaped with joy, and without hesitation, he rushed forward, unleashing a full-force punch toward Xu Mo, who was now trapped and in panic.

Xu Mo seemed to have nowhere to run. He could only watch as Black Wolf's enormous red fist shot toward his chest.

Just as Black Wolf's right fist was about to make contact with Xu Mo's chest, something completely unimaginable happened. Xu Mo, seemingly with no escape, suddenly used the momentum of the punch to leap backward, and his body bizarrely squeezed through the narrow gap between two steel plates!

Before Black Wolf could react, the steel plates slammed back into place, trapping his right hand, which hadn't been pulled back in time, in a gap barely five centimeters wide. The sharp edge immediately sliced open his unprotected wrist, blood gushing out.

Xu Mo, meanwhile, had already circled around the other side of the machine, clutching his chest in pain. Slowly, he raised the gun and aimed it at the back of Black Wolf's head.

Black Wolf couldn't believe what was happening. He was stunned as he watched Xu Mo's slightly trembling finger tighten on the trigger. His face went pale instantly, sweat beading on his forehead. Although he could kill multiple people without blinking, that didn't mean he wasn't afraid of death. In fact, the more people someone killed, the more they understood the value of life.

"Wait... Wait a minute! I'll give you my Doom Fragment, and I'll promise not to cause any more trouble in Shanggan City. I'll keep my mouth shut about today!" Black Wolf hurriedly said, trying to save himself.

Xu Mo paused slightly, his finger on the trigger. His gun lowered just a bit as he spoke with doubt, "The Doom Fragment can be taken out after it's absorbed? But according to what you said earlier, I could still get your Doom Fragment after you die, right?"

"Wait! Let me finish!" Black Wolf's long hair was drenched with sweat, sticking to his scalp like seaweed. "You may not know this, little brother, but while it's true you can get the Doom Fragment after killing the holder, once it's absorbed again, the power resets randomly. It will never be the same as the previous owner's ability. That means if you kill me, even if you get the Doom Fragment, you won't get my 'Demon's Hand.' Only if I actively separate the Doom Fragment can you gain my power."

"The Doom Fragment only appeared last night. How could you know so much?" Xu Mo still didn't fully believe Black Wolf.

With a gun to his head, Black Wolf had no choice but to tell the truth. He quickly explained, "This Doom Fragment didn't originally belong to me. I got it from someone else this morning. That person didn't use the 'Demon's Hand' ability, but another ability with no real use. After I killed him, the Doom Fragment reset, and I got this powerful 'Demon's Hand.' That's when I realized this feature of the Doom Fragment... How about this? I'll give you my 'Demon's Hand,' and then you can think about my offer, okay?" Saying this, Black Wolf swiftly extended his left hand, almost afraid Xu Mo would refuse.

As the red armor on Black Wolf's right hand came off, a shining blue vortex began to form in the palm of his left hand. Moments later, it slowly turned into a glass ball-sized blue orb.

It was indeed a Doom Fragment!

At some point, Xu Mo had begun accepting this fitting term, which at least sounded better than "mysterious bead."

Carefully, Xu Mo approached, gun still aimed at Black Wolf's head. After confirming that Black Wolf's right hand couldn't be pulled out from between the steel plates, Xu Mo reached for the blue Doom Fragment in his hand.

But just as his fingers brushed the fragment, Black Wolf suddenly let out an angry roar. He slammed his foot into the steel plate and forcefully pulled his right arm out of the gap, ripping it from the wrist! Seizing the moment Xu Mo was caught off guard, Black Wolf's left hand flipped over and grabbed the gun from Xu Mo's hand, effortlessly wrenching it away.

Xu Mo barely managed to fire a shot before the gun was taken from him, but it had no effect. As he steadied himself, Black Wolf turned the gun around and pointed it at his head.

"Haha! You little brat! The person who will take my life hasn't been born yet! Now, die!" Black Wolf grinned menacingly as he squeezed the trigger.

But all that was heard was a faint click.

The pistol only had twelve rounds, and Xu Mo's last shot had emptied the chamber.

"Why? Did you trick me?" Black Wolf roared angrily, extending his left hand to pounce on Xu Mo. But just a few steps into the charge, he felt a flash of white light in front of him. His body uncontrollably collapsed to the ground.

Half of Black Wolf's body was drenched in blood from the wound in his right wrist, and with his last bit of strength, he reached for Xu Mo's pants leg. His face twisted in agony, like a demon's.

Xu Mo took a frightened half-step back and instinctively said, "No... I didn't... I..."

But Black Wolf couldn't hear any of it anymore.

Suddenly, a red light appeared from Black Wolf's body, floating out to form a red orb, which rolled toward the blue Doom Fragment, lightly colliding with it.

Still shaken, Xu Mo sat on the ground, carefully crawling over to pick up the two Doom Fragments. He also tucked the emptied pistol into his jacket.

Under the dim, flickering lights of the factory, the dead bodies and surrounding machines cast strange, shifting shadows. The empty space was eerily silent, with only the cold wind howling through broken windows, emitting a mournful cry.

Barely able to move, Xu Mo forced himself to pick up his backpack and phone from the pile of debris. He staggered toward the wooden shack on the side of the factory.

At this point, Xu Mo's mind had reached its breaking point. As soon as he entered the shack, he collapsed to his knees, vomiting uncontrollably, tears streaming down his face. He continued until there was nothing left to purge, and then he weakly fell to the ground, his body curled up, shaking violently, his hands and feet ice-cold.

"Are... are you okay?"

The little girl, who had somehow removed the gag from her mouth, hesitantly asked.

Her soft voice was like a ray of sunshine, dispelling the cold that had been consuming Xu Mo's heart. He struggled to sit up, wiped his mouth, and hoarsely replied, "I'm fine... I'll... let you go in a bit."

The girl shuffled a little closer, her curiosity getting the best of her. "I heard gunshots... did you kill them?"

Xu Mo didn't answer. After sitting in silence for a moment to regain some strength, he stood up, walked over to the girl, and used the butterfly knife he'd picked up to cut through the ropes binding her.

"Come with me. I'll take you out of here."

He pulled the girl to her feet and, holding her hand, began leading her out of the shack.
