The New Ego

Chapter 16: Day 15 – A Lonely Bed, A Full Table

 Day 15 – A Lonely Bed, A Full Table

Mason woke up to the sound of his alarm, the same one he'd been using for weeks. The bed felt emptier than usual, the sheets cold and untouched on the other side.

"23 years," he thought, staring at the ceiling. "23 years of waking up alone."

He sat up, rubbing his face. The loneliness was a familiar weight, but today it felt heavier.

Mason started his day with his usual routine, but today he added a new twist: making breakfast. He shuffled into the kitchen, still groggy, and pulled out a frying pan.

"Eggs and toast," he muttered. "Simple, but it's a start."

He cracked the eggs into the pan, the sizzle filling the quiet kitchen. The smell of butter and toast soon followed, and for a moment, the loneliness faded.

As Mason plated the food, his family started trickling into the kitchen.

"You're cooking?" Alex asked, raising an eyebrow. "What's the occasion?"

"No occasion," Mason replied, setting the plates on the table. "Just felt like it."

His mom smiled. "It's nice to see you taking initiative."

His dad nodded, grabbing a plate. "Looks good, son."

Mia, still half-asleep, mumbled something about coffee and sat down.

Alex's girlfriend, Sarah, was there too, her presence becoming more common in the house. She smiled at Mason. "Smells amazing. Thanks for cooking."

Mason nodded, feeling a mix of pride and awkwardness. "No problem."

The table was fuller than usual, the clatter of forks and plates filling the silence. Mason sat at the end, watching his family interact.

Alex and Sarah were laughing about something, their hands brushing occasionally. His mom was sipping coffee, her eyes scanning the newspaper. His dad was quietly eating, his presence steady and reassuring. Mia was scrolling through her phone, her coffee untouched.

Mason felt a pang of something—loneliness, maybe, or envy. He wasn't sure.

"You've been quiet," Sarah said, turning to him. "Everything okay?"

Mason shrugged. "Just thinking."

"About what?" she asked, her tone gentle.

"Stuff," he replied, avoiding her gaze. "Life, I guess."

She nodded, not pushing further. "Well, if you ever want to talk, I'm here."

Mason managed a small smile. "Thanks."

After breakfast, Mason dove into his daily grind. He sat at his desk, his computer humming softly as he opened his Python tutorial.

Morning Routine:

Gym: 1 hour of weightlifting and cardio.

Studying: 2 hours of Python (focusing on neural networks).

Writing: 1 hour on 100 Different Lives: POV.

Content Creation: Filmed and posted a TikTok video about his morning routine.

"Day 15 of the grind," he said in the video. "Progress is slow, but it's progress. Keep going."

Later that evening, Sarah stayed for dinner again. The table was just as full as it had been at breakfast, the atmosphere warm but slightly awkward.

Mason sat in his usual spot, picking at his food. He couldn't help but notice how easily Sarah fit into the family dynamic. She laughed at Alex's jokes, helped his mom with the dishes, and even engaged his dad in conversation about his work.

"She's part of the family now," Mason thought, feeling a mix of admiration and resentment.

After dinner, Mason retreated to his room. He sat at his desk, staring at the blank screen of his computer.

"23 years," he thought again. "23 years of being alone."

He opened his notebook and started writing:

Thoughts on Loneliness:

It's not just about being single. It's about feeling disconnected.

I've spent so much time hiding from the world that I forgot how to connect with it.

Sarah fits in so easily. Why can't I?

He closed the notebook and leaned back in his chair.

"Maybe it's not about fitting in," he realized. "Maybe it's about finding my own place."

Before bed, Mason reviewed his progress for the day. He opened his notebook and wrote:

Day 15 Progress:

Gym: Increased weights on bench press and squats. Ran an extra mile.

Studying: Completed a Python tutorial on neural networks. Started researching trading strategies.

Writing: Wrote 1,200 words for 100 Different Lives: POV.

Content Creation: Posted a TikTok video. Gained 20 new followers.

AI Project: Trained the CNN model on a larger dataset. Still basic, but improving.

"Not bad," he thought. "But I can do better."
