Chapter 72: The Butcher of the Plains
Two elders, tasked with investigating the Titan's corpse and the rapid recovery of spiritual energy in the northern mountains, felt their hearts skip a beat as they arrived at a blood-soaked plain.
The mutilated bodies of rock-eaters were scattered everywhere. The slaughter had been so brutal that words couldn't do it justice. One of the corpses had been beaten so savagely that its flesh looked like pulp, oozing from countless gashes across its body. The other corpses were in no better condition.
A single question haunted the elders: Had the three venerable elders really committed such a brutal massacre to showcase their power? But this kind of bloodshed wasn't the work of a righteous cultivator. Even demonic cultivators wouldn't be capable of such cruelty.
What kind of creature could commit such a horrific act?
[My God, whatever killed these beasts must be incredibly dangerous. Slaying a whole group of rock-eaters isn't something just anyone can do. Maybe a sect leader or one of the venerable elders could defeat them easily, but most cultivators—especially the weaker ones—would be terrified to even get near them.]
[Could this be the work of another demonic beast? Maybe a pack of wolves led by a demonic king could pull something like this off.]
But when they examined the decaying bodies, it was clear the wounds had been made by fists, ruling out the idea of a wolf attack. The two elders quickly turned back to the Titan's remains, only to find that almost nothing was left of its body.
[That boulder, floating like an island in this sea of crimson-golden spiritual energy, is all that's left of the Titan?]
All that remained of the once-mighty Titan was a massive rock. After a brief pause to assess the scene, the elders immediately headed back to the sect.
Nearby, Fang Yuan was gathering firewood when the sudden sound of something slicing through the air caught his attention.
Whoosh!
Two shadows zipped across the sky, heading south at incredible speed. Seeing this, Fang Yuan smirked wickedly. "I knew it. There's an immortal sect here."
He then turned to Su Yun, who was still recovering her spiritual energy.
The two elders, racing as fast as they could, crossed the plains and eventually reached the sect.
Meanwhile, inside the sect,
the three venerable elders had remained silent since their failed attempt, but now, days after the incident, they were slowly resuming their normal routines. They walked through different sections of the sect, casting casual glances around, though nothing seemed to catch their attention.
After a while, they brought up the subject of Elder Su's daughter again, timing it so that Elder Su would always be present when they discussed it.
However, Elder Su had already seen through their intentions and knew exactly what they were planning.
[These hypocrites... I just have to endure them a little longer...]
As he tried to ignore them, the two returning elders suddenly rushed up to him in a panic.
"Elder Su...!"
Elder Su turned to see their terrified faces.
"Elder Su! There's a disaster... a monster... a monster out there!"
The three venerable elders smirked as they watched the frightened pair.
[Pathetic. The Mist Sect truly is pitiful.]
"What's the matter with you? Why do you look like that? You're supposed to be elders of the sect! What kind of example are you setting for the disciples with those faces?"
"But Elder, you weren't there! That plain has become a slaughterhouse. The smell of blood is everywhere, and carrion eaters and demonic spirits are crawling through every crack. Dark shadows are lurking, waiting to strike!"
One of the three venerable elders laughed. "Of course! That massive Titan must have scared you, but it's dead now. We defeated it, and it's all over. Hahaha."
"vener6 Elder, we're grateful for your protection, but this isn't about the Titan. Did you butcher an entire group of rock-eaters like that?"
"Rock-eaters? What are you talking about?"
"Elders, five fully grown rock-eaters were brutally torn apart, and all that's left of the Titan is a fifteen-meter boulder! If you didn't do it, then someone must've come after you. But even demons don't slaughter creatures like that. No... 'slaughter' isn't the right word—'butchery' doesn't even come close to describing what happened."
The two elders turned back to Elder Su, only to find his face drained of color. He was muttering under his breath, over and over, "S... Su Yun... Su Yun... She's.... around that area...!!!"
