Chapter 46: Takeover
Ethan sat in the meeting room, the team still deep in discussion. "I think we should focus on the music videos for now. After that, we can tackle the shows and all the other stuff," Ethan said, offering his opinion. Jessica nodded in agreement. "Yeah, that would be the best course of action," she said, before turning to Rebecca. "Any updates on the data?"
Rebecca glanced at her tablet. "It should arrive any moment now."
Bill, eager to keep the conversation moving, asked, "So, who's going to shoot the music video, and what's the concept?"
Ethan shrugged. "I'm not sure who yet, but I know the type of video I want," he said.
Jessica was about to respond when she noticed Rebecca, still staring at her tablet, completely silent. "What's wrong, Rebecca?" Jessica asked. When Rebecca didn't respond, they had to call her name a couple of times before she finally looked up.
"Sorry, sorry," Rebecca said, apologizing before her eyes widened with excitement. "Oh my god! I just—" she screamed, startling everyone in the room. The sudden outburst made everyone flinch. Jessica frowned, "Rebecca, that's highly unprofessional."
Rebecca, still glowing with excitement, quickly apologized again. "Sorry, but when I show you this, you'll understand why."
She jumped up, practically bouncing in her seat. "One of a Kind just became the second most-streamed album in a week, beating Taylor Swift's Folklore with 529 million streams! It's only behind Drake's Scorpion, which has 745 million streams." The room was still as she continued, "And that's not all! One of a Kind also became the most downloaded album in the U.S. in a single week, selling 3.7 million copies—surpassing Adele's 25."
Before anyone could speak, Rebecca added, "Wait for it—Ethan's album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and every song from the album holds the top spots on the Billboard Hot 100, from first to thirteenth, with Blinding Lights sitting at number one!" She finished, falling silent at last.
Bill, covering his ears, prepared himself for the inevitable. And as if on cue, Ethan shouted, "Fuck yeah!" He jumped up from his seat, filled with excitement. Jessica joined in, equally thrilled, screaming,
Bill quickly lowered his hands from his ears, grinning from ear to ear, when Jessica screamed again, startling him even more. "That's right! Fuck yeah!"" she shouted.
"Let me go get the wine," Bill said, always looking for an excuse to drink. He quickly left the room and returned with bottles, pouring a drink for everyone. Ethan raised his cup, taking out his phone and calling Max Martin, the producer behind the album. His voice was ecstatic as he recounted the news to Max.
"Okay, okay, we really need to make a decision about who's going to shoot the music video," Jessica said, trying to steer the conversation back on track. But her suggestion was met with groans and boos from the team, who weren't ready to stop celebrating yet.
As she attempted to regain control, her phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, she stood up straight. "Excuse me, I have to take this," she said, stepping out of the room.
A few minutes later, she re-entered, looking even more energized than before. Bill, noticing her entrance, quickly asked, "What happened?"
Jessica paused for a moment before speaking. "The label just solved all our problems. They're extremely pleased with us. Also, Grant Taylor Singer volunteered to direct Ethan's music videos."
"Wait, really?" Rebecca asked, clearly shocked.
Ethan, a bit confused, asked, "Who's that?"
Rebecca stared at him, flabbergasted. "What do you mean, 'who's that'? How do you not know him?"
Bill, trying to avoid attention, stood off to the side, wishing to disappear as Rebecca went on not knowing who that was too.
"Grant Taylor Singer is one of the hottest music video directors right now," Rebecca explained. "He's done videos for Travis Scott, Taylor Swift, and a ton of other artists. He's huge!"
"Yeah, Ethan, how do you not know him?" Bill chimed in, trying to hide his embarrassment the group just gave him a blank stare.
Ethan shrugged, now genuinely interested. "Sick, sick. That's nice. But I'd like to meet him first before I make any decisions."
"Totally understandable," Jessica agreed. "He's coming here first thing tomorrow."
"Wait, tomorrow?" Rebecca interjected. "Then we need to get you some new clothes ASAP!" She grabbed Ethan by the arm and pulled him out of the room, much to his displeasure.
Ethan groaned but couldn't help the smile spreading across his face. Despite the whirlwind of excitement and the pressure of the upcoming video shoot, he felt more alive than ever.
