Chapter 47: Chapter 47

On the highway from New York to Westchester, a silver shadow sped towards the distance, and with a "whoosh," it disappeared into the far horizon.

This was Alex driving towards Westchester.

Vanessa Amelia excitedly looked out of the car window at the rapidly receding scenery, her face full of eager anticipation, as if she wanted to stretch her head out the window and personally experience the sensation of the wind hitting her face.

"Alex brother, this car is so fast!"

"Of course," Alex said with a self-satisfied smile. He had extraordinary confidence in the sports car he was driving now.

The car's silver body was made of aluminum and carbon fiber, exquisite and luxurious. Under the hood, it housed an 8-liter, 16-cylinder, four-turbo engine. In just 2.5 seconds, it could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h, reach 200 km/h in 7.3 seconds, and hit 300 km/h in 16.7 seconds. Within one minute, it could achieve its top speed of 407 km/h.

This was the epitome of the world's top supercars, the fastest, most powerful, and most expensive car— the Bugatti Veyron!

The car Alex was driving was the limited edition among the limited editions, with only five units in the world—the Bugatti Veyron Pursang (Pureblood).

Each of these five cars had a price tag of 1.4 million euros, a luxury so extravagant and expensive that they were snapped up on the day of release.

However, it was worth mentioning that Alex hadn't spent much of his own money on this car. A few years ago, he set his sights on a large family with connections to both black and white operations, and this supercar was the spoils of that conquest. Of course, the shipping process and all the other associated fees did cost him quite a bit, and there were several times when he almost got scammed.

But it was all worth it. A beautiful car and beautiful women were the dreams of all men. Having such a fantastic supercar meant that no matter how hard or tiring it got, Alex would be happy!

"Vanessa, when we get to Westchester, you need to get along well with others," Alex advised while driving the sports car at full throttle, leaving all the other cars behind.

His superhuman reaction speed and physical control allowed Alex to effortlessly drive this high-powered car, skillfully dodging obstacles in his path. It moved as gracefully as a fish swimming in a strong current, sleek and elegant. The drivers of the cars he overtook were almost distracted enough to cause accidents!

"Ah hahahahaha!!"

Looking in the rearview mirror at the cars trying to catch up but being left farther behind, Alex and Vanessa both smiled in satisfaction as they sped ahead.

A few hours later, they arrived in Westchester and were met by Jean and Scott, who had come to greet them. After a brief chat, they drove ahead to guide Alex. To match their car's speed, Alex reluctantly had to slow down, feeling genuinely displeased.

The car traveled for another hour or so, and Alex and the others turned down a quiet path, arriving at a large estate clearly converted into a school—Xavier's School.

This was the X-Mansion that Charles had mentioned.

The spacious estate featured a row of unremarkable white buildings, with a vast, green sports field in front where many children were joyfully playing.

"I didn't expect Charles' school to already have so many mutant children!" Alex remarked, walking out of the car with Vanessa and observing the scene as Jean approached.

"The professor has been working on this for several years. These children were all found earlier. Most of them were abandoned by their parents, orphans with very tragic backgrounds," Scott, wearing strange glasses, explained as he approached Alex. "I never had the chance to thank you... thank you for rescuing me from the island."

"You are...?" Alex looked a little confused but soon realized. "Oh, I remember now! You were one of the mutants imprisoned on the island."

"My name is Scott Summers, but you can call me Scott," Scott said with slight formality.

"Don't be so tense, Scott. We'll be friends from now on," Alex said with a hearty laugh, patting Scott on the shoulder, easing the tension.

"Let's go. Professor Xavier is waiting for you in his office," Jean interrupted the conversation and led the way to a nearby building.

"Vanessa..." Alex called out, but received no reply. He turned, puzzled, and saw that Vanessa wasn't paying attention to their conversation. Instead, her gaze was fixed on the children playing on the field. There was clear envy and excitement in her eyes.

Seeing her in this state, Alex was even more convinced that she should stay here and study.

Alex walked over, ruffled Vanessa's hair, and gently snapped her back to attention. "No need to envy. Soon you'll be able to play with them."

"Mm!" Vanessa's eyes lit up at his words, and she cheerfully nodded at Alex.

Together with Jean and Scott, they walked into the school building and arrived at a room marked "Principal's Office," where Professor Charles Xavier was waiting for them.

When Charles saw Alex, he smiled and rolled his wheelchair toward him. "Welcome, my friends—Alex and Vanessa."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Professor," Alex said politely, while Vanessa, under Charles' gaze, shrank back a little and hid behind Alex.

"Heh, looks like you're still a bit shy," Charles chuckled lightly, then turned to Alex. "Vanessa's dormitory and other formalities are all taken care of. She'll be joining our family soon."

"Thanks!" Alex nodded, sincerely thanking him.

"No need to thank me. Caring for mutants is a responsibility I willingly take on," Charles said earnestly.

"You've chosen such a difficult dream, Charles. You truly are an idealist," Alex said with mild surprise. "If it were me, I wouldn't be interested in a dream I knew was impossible to achieve. Honestly, Charles, have you ever regretted this decision?"

"Regret?" Charles murmured, with Jean and Scott leaning in to listen. "Rather than regret, I'd say it's more like confusion. Everyone has moments of uncertainty, and I'm no exception. Sometimes I wonder if mutants can truly coexist with humans. Is what I'm doing even useful?"

"But when that feeling passes, I pick myself back up. I remind myself, if I don't do it, who will? If I don't try, how can mutants ever live peacefully with humans?! And when I think of that, I feel reinvigorated. I will continue to fight for it!"

"Professor..." Jean and Scott exchanged meaningful glances. They hadn't expected the kind-hearted, always-reliable Professor Xavier to also experience such moments of doubt.

"Ha!" Alex sighed but didn't offer an opinion on Charles' inner conflict. An overly idealistic dream would eventually collide harshly with reality. Would Charles' dream of mutants living in peace with humans come true, or would the harsh realities crush it? Alex was curious to see how this would play out.

"Jean, why don't you and Scott show Vanessa around the school?" Charles said, lightening the mood. "I need to talk to Alex for a bit."

"Go ahead," Alex said, looking down at Vanessa and giving her an encouraging nod.

"Mm, goodbye, Alex brother," Vanessa hesitated a moment before nodding, her expression reluctant as she left with Jean and Scott.

"You should work on building her independence," Charles said with a smile.

"Yeah, that's my mistake," Alex nodded with a hint of regret. A life of luxury couldn't ease Vanessa's long-standing wariness. Making her like a normal child would take time.
