Chapter 44: Chapter 44
"..."
At first, Kun'en, who had been burned, could still scream loudly, but gradually, his voice became weaker...
"Ah!!"
A young man, drenched in blood, suddenly rushed out from the corner of the wall. With a swift movement, the blade pressed him to the ground, and the young man forcefully checked both sides of his neck to see if they were intact.
"Not a vampire!"
Just then—
With a loud "bang," the small door outside was kicked open, and a large group of police officers rushed in, each wielding firearms, shouting as they entered.
Although these police officers posed no threat to Alex, he didn't want to provoke them right now. They represented the power of the state, and if he angered them, his life would not be easy from then on.
Therefore, to avoid trouble, they had to leave quickly!
"Tch, you're lucky!" Blade muttered bitterly, glancing at the charred body of the man.
"Serves you right for acting all high and mighty!"
Alex gave Blade an annoyed glance, ignoring his escape, and jumped up, heading straight for the ventilation shaft above.
"Boom!"
Without hesitation, he kicked a large hole in the wall and swiftly slipped away.
"Your strength is incredible, buddy!" Blade looked at the large hole Alex had just kicked with surprise. He couldn't fathom how the seemingly slender Alex could possess such great strength.
"Hurry up, hurry!" The police rushed to Kun'en's side, using fire extinguishers to put out the flames on his body. Other officers, frowning, began surveying the area. "Oh my god, is this some kind of massacre?!"
At this moment, the floor and walls of the room were covered in blood. Strangely, though, aside from the charred body and the stunned young man, there were only shredded clothes scattered on the ground.
"Hmph!" Blade snorted coldly and hurriedly charged out through the hole.
Exiting the slaughterhouse area, Blade saw Alex walking ahead and called out, "Hey, buddy, need to go to the hospital? That guy won't die so easily from being burned!"
"Go by yourself," Alex replied, not turning back.
Blade watched Alex's retreating figure, feeling somewhat vexed. It was hard to find such a strong companion, but his personality was so strange that it was hard to understand!
Leaving Blade behind, Alex walked alone down the street, silently contemplating, "The police arrived too quickly. There must be some members of the Haguigu [a species of vampire wannabes] among them!"
In both real life and movies, it's a universal truth that "police are the last to arrive on the scene," but their response this time was far too swift!
Something was definitely off, and Alex felt this was highly abnormal!
Adding to that was the Punisher's earlier mention of the "Haguigu" clan, and Alex was almost certain now: the Haguigu had infiltrated the police system!
"Who could it be?" Alex muttered to himself, using his ability to see a thousand miles to keep an eye on the police as they gathered at the slaughterhouse.
The Haguigu clan seeks to become vampires. They resemble normal humans in appearance and organization, and the only way to identify them is by the vampire family mark they receive on the back of their neck after becoming a vampire. (Once a Haguigu recognizes a vampire as their master, they are marked with the unique family symbol.)
"...Hmm?!"
Through his distant vision, Alex quickly checked the police officers, and soon, he noticed a similar totem on the necks of two white officers. While Americans are known to be fond of tattoos and markings, it was highly unusual for a mark as long as a finger to be burned into their necks!
"If I'm not mistaken..."
"It's you two!"
Having identified these two as members of the Haguigu, Alex memorized one of their appearances and shifted his attention to the other, determined to follow him closely.
Better to fish for the big catch than to wait for the small one!
The officer Alex was watching was a middle-aged white man. After returning to the station, he made some excuse and led a group of officers, who Alex suspected were also part of the Haguigu clan, to drive out of the station. Before leaving, they made sure to pick up plenty of ammunition and firearms, as though preparing for a shootout.
"What's going on? What are they planning?" Alex thought, puzzled. Using his speed advantage, he easily followed the officers.
Soon, the officers stopped at a hospital.
Once they arrived, they carefully checked their gear—guns, bullets, bulletproof vests—looking as if they were preparing to storm the hospital.
"Is that Blade?!"
Alex's eyes shifted to the interior of the hospital and, to his surprise, he saw Blade, the vampire hunter, the Daywalker, whom he had just parted ways with.
It turned out that this hospital was where Kun'en's body was being kept.
"No wonder. They're waiting for Blade!"
In Alex's line of sight, Blade, wearing black tactical gear, was walking confidently toward a certain floor. That floor had already descended into chaos.
The life force of vampires is incredibly strong, and Kun'en, nearly burned to a crisp and then dissected alive, was still in perfect condition. He first drained the male doctor who had been performing the autopsy, then chased down and bit a nearby black female doctor. The chaos on that floor had been caused by him.
"Ahhh!!"
Screams echoed throughout the hospital as nurses, doctors, and patients screamed in terror, Kun'en let out a low growl as he bit down on the black female doctor's neck.
"Ahhh!!"
The female doctor struggled in vain but couldn't escape Kun'en's grasp. Just as she was about to collapse, she saw Blade—the black man—quickly approaching.
"Hello, bastard!"
With the casual tone of greeting an old friend, Blade wasted no time. He leaped forward and landed a solid punch to Kun'en's head.
Kun'en, caught off guard while sucking blood, was knocked back several meters by Blade's punch. He crashed into a medical rack, and the black-clad female doctor was freed.
"Knew you wouldn't die so easily, Kun'en. I came to find you at the hospital!" Blade said coolly, smirking as he slowly approached Kun'en, who was dazed and stumbling.
"Get away, you freak!"
Having endured enough suffering at Blade's hands, Kun'en roared and lunged at Blade, but Blade easily dodged, slashing off a portion of Kun'en's forearm in the process.
"His swordsmanship is terrible. Who taught him to wield a sword!?" Alex, observing from a hundred meters away, couldn't help but complain again.
"Ahhh!!"
Kun'en, who had suffered another blow, instantly lost all his courage and turned to flee.
"Quick, quick, quick!!"
At that moment, the police officers from the cars began to act. They swiftly ran toward Blade's floor, and under Alex's gaze, Blade picked up the fallen female doctor before chasing after Kun'en.
"Is he still thinking about women at a time like this?" Alex thought, puzzled. He was about to enter the hospital but paused, deciding to keep watching the situation from afar with his vision. These police officers were well-prepared and had obviously planned ahead, but they might not be able to handle Blade, a half-vampire, and the woman who was on her way to becoming one.
If they really couldn't take down Blade and the others, Alex could only express his regret...
"If even these police can't beat you, Blade, you really don't deserve to be a vampire hunter anymore!"
Through Alex's eyes, the officers' bullets couldn't penetrate Blade's tactical suit. However, because Blade was carrying the woman, he didn't want to engage in combat with them. Instead, he pursued Kun'en, who was frantically escaping through the hospital, cornered and running straight for a window...
"Ahhh!!"
