Chapter 78: Discretion
Sunny huffed and swung the gym bag over his shoulder in annoyance.
"That's stupid. You don't have anything I'd want, so why the hell would I fight? Do you think I'll put my hands up over some girl? They're a dime a dozen where I'm from. I could stretch my hand out, and a new one would put herself in it without me having to ask. I have better things to fight for."
A massive wave of jealousy rose from all the boys in the room when they heard how easy it was for Sunny to get girls. Many of the boys there had never even touched a woman before, so hearing Sunny downplay such an achievement hurt deep!
Azrael grinned.
"I see, so you're just a fucking coward? All that talk was just bullshit, and you're nothing but a spineless bastard that's not willing to put in even the slightest bit of work for what he wants."
"What did you say to me?"
Sunny was starting to feel pure rage rising from inside him, and Azrael capitalized on this.
Azrael stepped closer to Sunny, and this time, it was Azrael whispering to him from between clenched teeth.
"You want to know what I think, Sun? I think you're scared. All those girls you run around with, they're easy. So easy that it's laughable. But you already know all this; that's why you want her so badly. You know that no matter how rich or powerful you are, she'll never see you as anything but a fucking piece of shit. You might have a million girls at your beck and call, but Maddison is a hundred times more woman than all of them combined. And you'll never be able to have her because she's mine."
Azrael glared at Sunny with his nastiest side-eye, and he grinned as he saw a vein throbbing in Sunny's neck.
There was a pressure rising in the room, as if the gravity was increasing slowly, and the other boys began to make space when they realized that Sunny was only a moment away from throwing a punch!
His fists were squeezed so tight that they were vibrating!
Azrael stepped away from Sunny and channelled his most condescending voice while spreading his arms wide.
"What do you say, Sunny-boy? Are you going to run away to your girls and have them lick your wounds like a little bitch, or are you going to fight like a man?"
The boys in the room turned to Sunny.
In their collective minds, they all knew that if they were in Sunny's shoes, they wouldn't allow Azrael to talk to them like this without wanting to beat the shit out of him.
It was so disrespectful, and since there was some semblance of truth in what he was saying, it only made things worse.
Right now, Azrael was preying on Sunny's weakness, and if Sunny refused the fight, then it would only make him look weaker.
Sunny pointed a hand at Azrael.
"Meet me in the arena."
And with that, Sunny was gone.
Azrael dropped his hands and let out a victorious sigh.
Yeah, that was exactly what Azrael thought Sunny would do.
Sunny was a hot-blooded young man, so provocations like these would easily get to him.
And Sunny having so many relationships with women just made it easier for Azrael to play on his weakness.
But for a moment there, Azrael really thought that Sunny wouldn't fall for the bait.
If Sunny had simply let things go and ignored the challenge, then there was nothing Azrael would be able to do about it.
This was exactly why Azrael tried to keep all his secrets close to his chest. That way, no one would be able to use his weaknesses against him.
Too bad Sunny never learned the meaning of discretion from his girlfriends.
Azrael had already figured that Sunny was never going to let him into the party in the first place, so even if Azrael told Sunny that Maddison was going to be coming as well, Sunny still wouldn't have given Azrael an invite.
That was why Azrael decided to use this tactic instead.
By forcing Sunny into a contest, Sunny would have no choice but to allow him in if he won.
And since Maddison was going to be coming regardless of the outcome of the fight, Sunny's subconscious would think that it was a win either way.
Win or lose, Maddison would be there.
So right now, the only thing they were fighting over was whether or not Azrael could be at the party.
And Azrael just had to make sure he won.
Azrael went and grabbed his gym clothes from the locker and put them on.
The other students in the room murmured amongst each other curiously as they wondered how the fight was going to go, but they didn't bother to follow the pair.
The boys all came here to work out, and even though they were curious about the fight, they weren't going to throw their own exercise out the window just to watch others fight.
And since it was going to be held in the arena, they wouldn't be able to go in without permission from the combatants.
They'd know the outcome afterward anyway, so they just watched as Azrael closed his gym locker and began heading out to meet Sunny.
Azrael was wearing a long-sleeved shirt and a pair of loose joggers. On his hands, he wore black gloves, and as he got to the elevator in the gym, he was surprised when he saw another student inside.
Cleopatra Larkson was standing with her arms folded under her chest. Her hair was tied in a ponytail, and her dark purple eyes glanced toward Azrael once the door opened before a smile appeared on her face. Beside her, a large bag was resting against the wall.
"We meet again, reject."
Azrael cursed under his breath once he saw her.
This was the last place Azrael wanted to meet Cleopatra.
He didn't have time for this.
Azrael was supposed to have been in a meeting with Cleopatra earlier, but he ignored it and decided to go later because the conversation with Sunny was more important.
Azrael thought he would just avoid her for today and then go see her tomorrow after he was sure he had an invite for the party.
How in the world was Azrael's luck this bad?
Cleopatra made some space in the elevator and waved Azrael inside. Another boy tried to get on the elevator as well, but Cleopatra glared at him in anger, and the boy immediately took a step out and waited as the doors closed, leaving just the two of them.
Once it closed, Cleopatra turned to Azrael.
"Why didn't I see you after school today?"
"I had a meeting with my teacher."
"...You're lying."
"Yes, I am. Honestly, I just really didn't want to meet with you."
Azrael was staring straight ahead at the door while saying all this. He had tried to lie, but in the end, he decided that the truth was better in this situation.
If she got angry, then he could give her some space to calm down.
Preferably until tomorrow.
But Azrael was surprised when he heard Cleopatra laugh from beside him.
