Snowstorm: I'm Super Rich in the Apocalypse

Chapter 18: Chapter 18 The Battle of Wits in the WeChat Group

Gu Pan and the others didn't linger there after making their purchases; they hurried home, given that staying out in such weather for long would be unbearable. When they had been queuing earlier, they took turns moving around to avoid freezing.

When they reached the entrance of their housing estate, they saw quite a few people just about to go join the queue. Seeing them returning with their groceries, the neighbors asked what they had bought and if there were many people in line.

Gu Pan and company briefly responded and quickly walked away. After braving the cold and standing in line for two or three hours, they were eager to get home and warm up.

Just as they entered the building, they saw the owner of apartment 501 by the door, who quickly approached them, "What did all of you manage to buy?"

Gu Pan looked at the old lady in her sixties, her eyes alight with eagerness, and truly found her annoying. They had already had a falling out in the community chat group, and here she was, acting as though nothing was wrong, still expecting handouts—an unsettling trait in someone with no shame.

Not wishing to waste words with her, Gu Pan replied, "If you stood in line, you'd know. We've been out in the cold all morning and really need to warm up at home now."

Seeing that Gu Pan was unaffected by her entreaties, apartment 501's owner grabbed Chen Lang, "Young man, students should respect their elders and care for the young. What did you buy? Let grandma see."

Chen Lang, who had experienced a rescue operation with his parents before, covered his bags and pulled away from the woman's grasp, "Grandma, we queued for three hours, it's cold and we're tired, we really need to get home."

Worried that she might start to persuade Feng Zhekai, Gu Pan quickly turned to him, "Dr. Feng, your family must be worried about you by now, let's go."

Upon hearing this, Zhekai indeed became anxious and quickened his pace up the stairs.

Gu Pan and the others clutched their bags and hurried home, mainly because of the severe cold.

After giving them a disdainful look, the woman from 501 continued to wait at the entrance. She didn't want to queue at the supermarket; her plan was to ask for whatever little she could from returning neighbours rather than leaving her grandson alone at home for hours, which worried her. Besides, in such cold weather, if she could avoid going out herself, she would.

Reaching the sixth floor, Gu Pan stopped and asked Feng Zhekai, "Dr. Feng, would you like to trade with us?"

Chen Shaonan also said, "We have two different kinds at home; you can trade with us if you want."

Zhekai shook his head, "No need, as long as I have food to eat. I'll go buy some myself early tomorrow."

With that, they didn't say much more and bade farewell before going upstairs.

When they reached their floor, they said goodbye to Chen Shaonan and his group and all went to their respective homes.

Entering their apartment, it took them quite a while to get out of their clothes because they had worn so many layers. After shedding their down jackets, the two quickly went into the bedroom.

During the day, electricity wasn't supplied, so now they were using stored power from Space to heat their home. Since energy wasn't renewable, they couldn't afford to waste it, so they made sure just the bedroom was warm. Although they had stored a substantial amount, the future was uncertain and they needed to conserve as much as possible.

Once they were in the bedroom, they started to feel their bodies warming up. They sat on the bed and looked at the messages in the chat group.

Few spoke of having purchased anything in the community chat group, as there weren't many who had gone out as early as Gu Pan and the others, and at this time, those who were still out couldn't check their phones as the cold had turned them off, rendering them useless even if taken out.

Two hours later, there was chatter in the high school chat group; someone mentioned that their local supermarket had already sold out for the day, leaving many people who had queued in vain, planning to go earlier the next day.

Before long, some in their own community group, who hadn't managed to buy anything, complained about arriving too late.

Complaints soon increased, with more people wondering why everyone went so early to queue.

The lady from apartment 501, frustrated for not having scored any freebies, was particularly annoyed.

She was still holding a grudge over the incident Gu Pan mentioned about her having frozen food in her fridge, which had cost her quite a bit.

She spoke up in the group chat, "Looks like we're not as well-informed as the person on the 7th floor. They went shopping early this morning and didn't even bother to tell anyone to go earlier."

Gu Pan replied in the group, "We're just being careful and prepared. Plus, we're not in a hurry like you because you still have food, right? With what's stocked in your two fridges, you could probably last for several months?"

She was in no rush to deal with this old lady because her supplies had been exposed. Once things got chaotic outside, her family would be the first target for robbery. If she wanted to divide Gu Pan's supplies, then Gu Pan wouldn't let her keep hers safe either.

At this point, the conversation in the group shifted back to the owner of 501, with everyone asking how much food they had left. Gu Pan withdrew and watched the drama unfold.

Lu Ruisheng watched Gu Pan and laughed, "People like that, I really can't tell if they're clever or stupid. With so many supplies, wouldn't it be better to quietly keep a low profile? Why show off like that?"

Gu Pan also smiled, "There are plenty of people who are greedy like a snake trying to swallow an elephant. We don't need to deal with them, just wait for their home to be robbed."

At this moment, Zhekai sent a message, "Thank you, Xiao Lu. If I hadn't gotten up early with you, I probably wouldn't have been able to buy anything."

Ruisheng replied, "No need to be polite. Even though we invited you, it was your willingness to get up early that made it possible to get the goods."

Zhekai: "Still, I have to thank you. Are you guys going tomorrow?"

Ruisheng: "We haven't decided yet. We'll let you know after we discuss it."

Zhekai: "Okay, thank you."

After showing the phone to Gu Pan, Ruisheng asked, "Are we going again tomorrow?"

Gu Pan shook her head, "Unless we go line up at midnight, there's no point in going."

Ruisheng said, "I'll still go with them tomorrow morning. We shouldn't act like we know everything. It's important for others to feel at ease if they see that we went but didn't manage to get anything."

Gu Pan nodded, "You're right. Let's go again."

Ruisheng then got back in touch with Chen Shaonan and Zhekai to confirm they would go again tomorrow.

At noon, Gu Pan took out a pot of mutton soup. The two of them enjoyed it, feeling warm and comfortable. They didn't dare eat hotpot, fearing the aroma might be too strong and arouse suspicion.

Right after lunch, Ruisheng received a call from Zhuang Jie. As usual, he put the phone on the table on speaker so both he and Gu Pan could listen.

Through tears and sniffles, Zhuang Jie pleaded after the call connected, "Brother Lu, you really must help me out. Our windows are sealed shut with snow. We have the elderly and children at home, and it's completely uninhabitable. You know my mother-in-law dotes on my brother-in-law, and we can't stay with her. We have no other choice but to seek refuge with you."

Ruisheng flatly refused, "Our place isn't convenient either. You'll have to think of something else."

Zhuang Jie's grip tightened on the phone, "Brother Lu, we are brothers. I'm really out of options. The only place I can turn to is yours. You can't just stand by and watch me die, can you?"

"This weather won't last forever. It will warm up in a few days. Don't make a fuss," Ruisheng pretended to be oblivious.

Zhuang Jie had been somewhat suspicious, but after hearing Ruisheng's words, he felt reassured; they really didn't know anything and were still hoping for the weather to warm up.

He said, "Brother Lu, if in a few days it's still like this, I really will have to seek refuge with you."

"Your family has both old and young. It's too dangerous to travel far and in the cold to get to my place. You should hurry and rent a place in a higher floor in your own complex. Once you've settled, let me know the location, and my sister-in-law and I will come visit you," Ruisheng advised.

He needed to know the exact place where the other party would end up. Once order broke down, he could take precise revenge. Currently, the country's legal system was still in place, and murder was a crime. He used to be a soldier, so he had a legal red line.
