Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Moral Kidnapping
But at this time, no one wanted to take in strangers – those not called upon naturally pretended not to hear.
101 Resident @ 401 Floor Leader: "Floor Leader, you're the most authoritative person in our building. You can't just ignore us, can you?"
401 Floor Leader: "My mother-in-law is paralyzed from the waist down and needs adult diapers; she must have a room to herself. My daughter-in-law is pregnant, and my son needs to take extra care of her. We can't separate the young couple, can we? My wife and I are staying in the study; we genuinely have no space and are powerless to help."
This was indeed true, as the reason why she was elected as the floor leader was that she was famously filial and took great care of her paralyzed mother-in-law.
Actually, even though the floor leader often bound others with her morality and played the Holy Mother, her filial piety was no doubt admirable and deserved praise. No one is perfect; these things might not seem significant in ordinary times, but this is the apocalypse, and some things can't be judged with the same mindset from before.
When no one else spoke up and it was clear they weren't going to go through every apartment asking, the silence meant they didn't want to help.
But the first floor wasn't stupid; they thought of seeking allies.
101 Resident @ 201 Resident: "The snow isn't showing any signs of stopping. If our unit gets sealed off, then yours will be next. We need to work together to come up with a solution."
201 Resident: We're discussing this matter at home, not free to talk now.
With that, they left the conversation, and 101 and 102 were at a loss. The chat ended just like that, and the group fell quiet again, with no one even complaining about food and water. Probably they were all afraid of getting asked about lodging questions by the first floor.
In these times, everyone has their sense of personal space – who would like the idea of a stranger moving into their home? Especially now, when there's a lack of food and the restrooms aren't usable.
Gu Pan held her phone as she stepped out of the bedroom.
Lu Ruisheng had made sandwiches and boiled milk: "Time for breakfast."
Gu Pan replied, "Let me wash my face, and I'll be right there."
After she freshened up, she returned to the dining table, and the two sat down opposite each other to eat and chat.
Lu Ruisheng asked Gu Pan, "So, is the first floor going to move into the hallway today?"
Gu Pan shook her head, "I remember it took them two or three days. After all, no place is as secure as home, but snow sealing the windows and cutting off all light, that's not fit for human habitation."
"That makes sense. Then, which floor's hallway did they move into? Not ours, right?"
"I think it was the third or fourth floor; closer to their own place."
"Then let's put off installing our security door a little longer to avoid drawing attention."
"Mm." After breakfast, they both went into the Space. Today, Lu Ruisheng had finished assembling the shelves, and he placed the ordered meals on them. Having the food on the floor always felt somewhat uncomfortable.
He then arranged some commonly used items like in a supermarket, setting up quite a lot so that whenever Lu Ruisheng wanted to find something, he could, and Gu Pan could retrieve things with her mind more easily.
At noon, 401 Floor Leader @ everyone in the group: "Do we have any doctors or nurses in our building? Someone has fainted in the neighbouring unit."
Soon, the previously silent 601 Resident spoke up: "I'm a doctor, emergency medicine. What's the patient's condition?"
401 Floor Leader: "Kidney failure, they used to go for dialysis every three days. They were due yesterday, but with this weather, they can't go out, and ambulances can't get through. They just have to hang on."
601 Resident: "There's nothing I can do. A patient who needs dialysis every three days must be in serious condition. Without a dialysis machine, without peritoneal dialysis equipment, I don't have the emergency medicine or medical equipment. Going there would be of no use."
401 Building Manager: "You're the only doctor in our two buildings. There's hope if you go, but if you don't, that person can only wait for death."
501 Resident: "Saving a life is more meritorious than building a seven-tiered pagoda. How could you not go?"
601 fell silent.
Gu Pan frowned, remembering something, and said to Lu Ruisheng, "Honey, in our past life, the doctor never returned after he left. He's a doctor, and although we have 'Space,' one cannot avoid falling ill. If we had a doctor, we might live more comfortably."
Lu Ruisheng also agreed, "Indeed, and such fearless sacrifice is unnecessary. I'll add him on WeChat and have a private chat."
Gu Pan acknowledged, "Yeah, try adding him. If he doesn't accept, then we'll have to confront him at his door."
Lu Ruisheng sent a WeChat friend request: I'm the owner of 701 upstairs. I have something very important to discuss with you.
The other party quickly accepted the request, probably because he was also hesitating with his phone at a time when going out could mean not returning.
Lu Ruisheng made a direct WeChat call and turned on speakerphone, placing it on the table so both he and Gu Pan could hear.
The other party answered the call, "Hello, are you from 701 upstairs?"
Lu Ruisheng said, "I am. I'll get straight to the point. The water pipes in the underground garage have burst from the freeze and blocked the entrance to the basement level. If you leave through the upper levels, the wind might sweep you away, leaving no chance of survival. The patient in the next building, you won't be able to save him even if you go. It's not necessary to risk your life for someone you can't save."
The 601 Resident sighed, "But I'm a doctor. Saving lives is my duty."
Gu Pan replied, "But have you thought about it? If you stay safe in this building, you are also ensuring the safety of the residents here. Isn't that being responsible for more people?"
The 601 Resident wavered but still had his own worries, "But if I don't go, what will the neighbors say about me? How would my family live here afterward?"
Gu Pan spoke frankly, "As long as I share my thoughts with everyone, I believe they'll all agree with me that you shouldn't go. After all, when it comes to themselves, everyone will lean toward their own best interests."
The 601 Resident agreed with Gu Pan's words, but he asked in confusion, "Why are you helping me?"
Lu Ruisheng was straightforward, "Didn't we say it? With you here, it's safer for everyone in this building. We all have mortal flesh, and if the disaster continues, having a doctor in the building gives us peace of mind."
The 601 Resident laughed, "You've thought this through. Indeed, as you said, it's meaningless for me to go. Even a ten percent chance of success would be worth the risk. Although you say you have your own motives, I still want to thank you for letting me stay without taking the risk. If I went out today, I might not come back."
Lu Ruisheng said, "Then it's settled."
The 601 Resident replied, "Okay, thank you."
Lu Ruisheng hung up the phone.
Gu Pan had already sent a message in the resident WeChat group: I don't want the 601 doctor to go to the next unit. Everyone knows how terrible the blizzard is outside. If the doctor goes out and gets swept away, he might never return. We're lucky to have a doctor in our building; no one can ensure that we won't get sick. Ambulances can't come now, and we can't get to the hospital. If we have an emergency and there's no doctor, we can only wait for death. The 601 doctor has already said he is powerless about the next unit's case. Why should we also take the risk of losing a doctor?
As a result, the busy group fell quiet.
Before long, the 501 Resident spoke up first: "I think the 701 owner is right. If he can't save them, there's no need to take the risk. Having a doctor in our building makes everyone feel at ease."
402 Resident: "Indeed, unnecessary sacrifice is valueless. It's better to keep the light and warmth for those who need it more."
401 Building Manager: "Right, there's nothing that can be done, and it's a waste to even go. It's also risky to go out, so why don't you just stay? Maybe the 601 doctor can add the patient's WeChat and instruct them on how to help themselves?"
To this, the 601 Doctor was willing: "Okay, have the patient's family add me on WeChat."
