Chapter 11: Chapter 11 The Change of Human Heart
"That's a valid point," many residents began discussing.
The homeowner from 901 who drinks purified water: "I can handle the cold, but I can't handle living like this in filth."
The flower enthusiast from 402: "How about we take turns throwing out the trash? Just wear more, and throw it in the garbage can near our building entrance. It's only ten meters away, should be manageable, right?"
Homeowner from 402: "Are we organizing this from the first floor up, or from the top floor down?"
Homeowners from 101 and 102: "Obviously, from top to bottom."
Homeowners from 1101 and 1102: "Obviously, from bottom to top."
Homeowner from 901: "Then what's the point of anyone throwing out? It's all at the entrance anyway. What's the difference from just throwing it from upstairs? The snow is over half a meter thick now, and it's still a blizzard. What if someone gets swept away, gets stuck in the snow and can't return, or gets hit by something, and now we can't even get to a hospital?"
Everyone had thought of that, but it just seemed too indecent. Throwing trash in the bins felt slightly more ethical.
But, as the homeowner from 901 had said, it's dangerous to go outside, and when it comes to human life, nothing else is as important.
Building representative from 401: "Then let's each handle our own trash, but let's avoid using the bathroom. We're all family here, we need to help each other and get through this together. This weather should pass soon."
The chat went silent for a while, then the homeowner from 901 broke the silence, "Could it really be the apocalypse?"
Homeowner from 501: "You youngsters just talk nonsense. I've been alive for over 60 years and have never heard of an apocalypse."
Homeowner from 901: "If there had been an apocalypse, we wouldn't be here, not counting the extinction of the dinosaurs."
Homeowner from 501: "That's all nonsense, don't scare people."
Building representative from 401: "Even heavy snow should stop after two days; I guarantee it will stop tonight. Let's not argue anymore. It's early morning, everyone should eat."
As for the restroom situation, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng were prepared. They had some cat litter to ensure that, even if the temperature suddenly rose, their waste wouldn't turn into a nasty mess.
Meanwhile, people in the group continued to complain about the lack of food at home, but it was only the second day, and it wasn't to the point of starvation, they just didn't have much they felt like eating, leading to some grumbling but no severe distress.
After breakfast, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng went into "Space", where Lu Ruisheng set up shelves and Gu Pan continued to search through Zhuang Jie's boxes. They hadn't opened many small boxes yet and were both curious.
Of course, they found many useful items including some 3D-printed gun parts. It seemed Zhuang Jie had survived well and long in the previous apocalypse, having access to better resources than Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng.
But that didn't matter now as all the items were theirs.
When they got to the last dozen boxes, they were stunned. Unexpectedly, Zhuang Jie had stockpiled so many seeds and incubation eggs, all kept in constant temperature boxes.
Having these items meant that "Space" could preserve them, and they would be useful after the apocalypse for planting and breeding. The presence of new life signified hope for the future, filling them with optimism.
Once they had used up their time in "Space" in the afternoon and couldn't re-enter, they began working on assembling the guns. Though the blizzard had lasted only ten days, and many national institutions had reopened for a few days, chaos had already started to stir.
When the power went out and the internet vanished, with no working street surveillance or contact with the police, people became unregulated.
Although government broadcasts still occasionally told everyone to wait for national directives, many were hungry by that point and became less inclined to obey the law, especially without any surveillance or police presence.
The days have been getting dark earlier, and today it was already dark by 4 p.m.
Complaints in the residents' group chat peaked this evening due to lack of water, and those who didn't have food reserves began to express their grievances.
Residents of 101 and 102 complained the most in the group chat. The snow had nearly reached the windowsills of the first floor and showed no signs of stopping. They worried that by tomorrow, the windows would be completely sealed by the snow.
The president of unit 401 tried to comfort them in the chat, "Don't be too nervous, everyone. The snow can't keep falling forever. Even in winter, it doesn't always snow like this. Maybe it will stop tonight."
Owner of 101 said, "But the snow is even heavier than yesterday. You aren't scared because you're higher up, but what about us on the first floor?"
Owner of 102 added, "Yes, we're on the first floor. How could we not be scared? If the snow really seals our windows, could I even stay at someone else's place upstairs?"
Owner of 501 responded, "We're all neighbors here, who wouldn't help out in a real emergency?"
Some other owners also spoke nicely.
Gu Pan shook her head as she read these messages and said to Lu Ruisheng, "By tomorrow morning, the first-floor windows will be sealed by the snow, and none of these nice talkers will take them in."
Lu Ruisheng replied, "The apocalypse really tests human nature."
That evening, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng took a bath. The bathwater wasn't drained but stored in the Space, as the drain pipes were now frozen. They planned on keeping it that way until they could go out to dispose of it, since there was a waste bucket in the Space.
In fact, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng really had Zhuang Jie to thank for preparing things they hadn't thought of.
After the bath, with the electric heater on and the bedside lamp casting a seductive glow, the newlyweds, who had been busy for over ten days, finally took some time to relax.
They turned off their phones — with everything going on outside, there was no need for disturbances during this pleasant time.
After a couple of rounds, they fell deeply asleep.
The next day, Gu Pan woke up to find Lu Ruisheng leaning against the headboard, browsing and downloading military and weapons-related information on his tablet, catching up on downloads he hadn't completed before.
Seeing Gu Pan awake, he kissed her forehead and said, "Awake? I'll make breakfast. Check the residents' group chat, it's just as you said."
Saying so, he handed his own phone to Gu Pan. The couple never had secrets and were always casual about sharing their phones.
With the power still on, Lu Ruisheng treasured the time to use the electrical appliances for cooking.
Gu Pan, watching him bustling energetically, couldn't understand how, after the night's exertions which were typically more taxing for men, she was the one with a sore back while he seemed energized.
Shaking her head in confusion, she sat up and opened the group chat, sighing at the sight of over 99 messages. Maybe these people had their flaws, but if not for the apocalypse, they wouldn't become truly vile. However, the apocalypse could change everything.
Currently, the owner of 101 was posting, "Our windows are already half sealed by the snow. If it doesn't stop tonight, our home will be buried in snow."
Owner of 102 chimed in, referencing a previous conversation, "@Owner of 501, Auntie, it's just you and your grandson at your place, right? Could we stay with you for a few days?"
Owner of 501 replied, "My child is timid and afraid of strangers. I'm really sorry."
Everyone knew that the grandson of 501 was a rambunctious six-year-old, robust and always causing trouble in the elevator. Everyone was secretly troubled by him. Claiming he was scared was clearly a fabricated excuse.
