Chapter 13: Experiment 10 - Reality Strike
While the Research Team observed SCP-9743's behavior inside his containment cell Dr. Alexander Grimm was working on a deep understanding for future experiments.
Given SCP-9743's resurrection ability and the clear behavioral and power differences observed before and after revival, Dr. Alexander Grimm would likely focus on controlled experiments to dissect the mechanics, triggers, and implications of this shift. The goal would be to understand the anomaly better while minimizing unnecessary risks. Here's a logical progression for the next experiment:
Next Experiment Proposal: Testing Emotional and Cognitive Influence
Dr. Grimm may hypothesize that SCP-9743's "pre-revival" and "post-revival" states represent two distinct personalities or consciousness states, influenced by environmental factors, emotions, or physical trauma. The experiment should aim to explore the psychological and emotional triggers behind these shifts.
Experiment Details:
SCP Interaction Partner:
Introduce SCP-239 ("The Witch Child") or SCP-343 ("God"). These SCPs have unique mental and reality-bending capabilities that could provide insights into SCP-9743's psyche and metaphysical nature.
Why SCP-239? She has immense telekinetic power and a childlike mentality. Testing SCP-9743's ability to communicate with or protect itself from SCP-239's abilities would provide insights into its resistance to reality-bending effects and emotional response when interacting with an unpredictable and innocent SCP.
Why SCP-343? His godlike wisdom and understanding might provoke a deeper existential conversation with SCP-9743, shedding light on its purpose, origins, and dual nature.
Triggering the Resurrection Mechanism:
The test could involve controlled simulations of death in a variety of ways (non-lethal, but enough to force SCP-9743's body into its resurrection state). This would confirm:
The required conditions for revival. Whether the "post-revival" state always emerges with the same demeanor or if it can adapt to circumstances. Whether SCP-9743 remembers its actions post-revival in detail.
Cognitive and Emotional Testing:
Introduce a series of cognitive and emotional challenges during the experiment:
Engage SCP-9743 in philosophical debates or moral dilemmas to analyze differences in reasoning before and after revival. Simulate high-stress situations to gauge how it processes emotions and how that relates to the switch between states.
Environment Testing:
Place SCP-9743 in different environmental settings that might elicit different behaviors:
A high-stakes combat scenario. A peaceful and serene environment. An interaction with artifacts like SCP-914 to test its adaptability.
Energy and Power Analysis:
Utilize tools like energy sensors to measure the amount of anomalous energy SCP-9743 exudes before, during, and after resurrection.
Experiment Hypotheses:
Primary Hypothesis: SCP-9743's "post-revival" state may represent a primal or subconscious aspect of its personality, designed to protect itself or enact judgment.
Secondary Hypothesis: SCP-9743's abilities may tie into a larger metaphysical or reality-bending mechanism, potentially linked to other SCPs or its own self-imposed "role" in the world.
Dr. Alexander Grimm would likely push for the SCP-239 experiment first, as her childlike innocence might disarm SCP-9743, forcing it to reveal more of its deeper nature without engaging in outright combat.
Once Dr. Alexander finished, he finally paid attention to the monitors, as one of the Research Team wanted him to know. Dr. Alexander Grimm observed, and saw SCP-9743 still sitting, but now, he wasn't holding the red bright knife, but instead, he was caressing his head with his right hand, and his right leg was posed in V, while his left hand was against the ground, and for a sudden, he turned to look slightly at his left, but his eyes were looking as if something or someone was behind his left shoulder.
SCP-9743: "Alright, kiddo, just... Just have caution, okay?" Sighs, and gives a small smirk. "I love you, kiddo. Yeah yeah, heh. Lets continue talking the normal way, I'm not sure if anyone's hearing or not, but..." He turned to look at the cameras, before turning his head down. "They're definitively observing."
After a moment, SCP-9743 is surprised by seeing a kid entering his containment cell, but he remains sitting, and just react with a surprised expression, not expecting to see a kid. SCP-239 slowly approaches SCP-9743, both looking at each other, and then SCP-9743 got up.
SCP-239: "You look so weird and... Creepy..."
SCP-9743 looks intrigued, then at himself up and down, and then back at SCP-239.
SCP-239: "Are... Are you a normal human?" She asks with a slight shiver in her voice.
SCP-9743: "Yeah, I am. And thanks, I guess? I like being creepy. But I'm just 6'8 feet tall, for myself, I'm not tall."
SCP-239 reacts shocked, surprised.
SCP-239: "I mean... You're so tall! You're towering me, and I feel... So small right now!"
SCP-9743: "But you're more cute than me, and you're more agile than me."
SCP-239: "I'm cute, huh?"
SCP-9743: "Yeah? But well, I don't want anything weird, so... What is a kid like you doing in... A strange place like this?"
SCP-239: "I'm here because I have a very powerful ability. I can bend reality... But I don't have full control over it, so I got brought here!"
SCP-239 says in a proud tone, but SCP-9743's reaction is a tired stare, as if he already passed for something similar.
SCP-9743: "Reality... Control?..."
SCP-239: "Mhm! I can do anything I want with my powers! But... I do need to use spells to perform them. Oh, and I get to have a lot of toys, books, and stuff! What about you, hmm?"
SCP-9743: "... I have magic and determination."
SCP-239's eyes widen, as she also smiles after hearing SCP-9743's response.
SCP-239: "Magic like my magic?! And determination, huh? That's the thing that makes you refuse to die until you get what you want, right?"
SCP-9743's expression become more darkened, as his pupils just vanished, and his expression seems more tired than before.
SCP-9743: "Not like yours, but... How you know about determination?"
SCP-239: "I just know about determination in general, and what it is. It's something that, even if you fail time and time and time again... You just keep going..."
SCP-9743: "... Alright? And so... What type of spells you can cast?"
SCP-9743 is very suspicious against SCP-239, as his expression is very clear, and not trusting SCP-239 even the least. What makes SCP-239 hesitate in what she should answer.
SCP-239: "Well, I can cast spells like... 'Luminara', 'Torrida', 'Aera', 'Aero', 'Glacies', and a whole lot more!"
SCP-9743: "... No idea of what is any of those spell."
SCP-239 reacts pouting and crossing her arms, looking frustrated at SCP-9743.
SCP-239: "They're basic combat spells! One of them makes light, one of them controls and produces fire, the next is air, and the last one is air!"
SCP-9743: "Huh, create light, fire, air, and ice? Are you the mage of elements?"
SCP-239 nods with excitement.
SCP-239: "Mhm! I'm like a... an element mage!"
SCP-9743: "I can also create fire and control it."
SCP-239: "You can?! Fire is very cool! Can you create and control other things other than fire?"
SCP-239 acts very excited, and looks at SCP-9743 with curiosity.
SCP-9743: "Well... Manipulate someone's gravity, create and control bones... I'm not sure though of everything I could do, but... I have quite the arsenal."
SCP-239: "Wow, that's... A lot of stuff... Hey, do you mind if I ask you something?"
SCP-9743: "What is it?
SCP-239: "I was just wondering... You said you could manipulate other's gravity. Can you manipulate your own gravity as well?"
SCP-9743: "... That... No... I don't think so..."
SCP-239: "You don't think so? So you aren't sure?"
SCP-9743: "I never tried, but I don't think is possible. I think is like... The wizard can't cast a spell that could directly harm it."
SCP-239 thinks for a moment in the phrase, trying to understand, but she remains confused.
SCP-239: "That's stupid. Why can't a wizard cast a spell that can harm it? Aren't there spells for self defense... Self defense isn't a harmful spell, right?"
SCP-9743: "Exactly. Any spell you can is for protect you, and attack others, not for attack yourself."
SCP-239: "I still don't understand, though..." Can you give me an example or something?"
SCP-9743: "For example, a shield. You cast to have a shield, alright? The shield can't harm you, but can be used for push others away, that is some sort of attack, while protects you from others."
SCP-239: "Oh... I get it now... So... You can't use any spells to directly harm yourself, right?"
SCP-9743: "Well, why would someone do that in first place? You wouldn't, no?"
SCP-239: "No, that's true... But what if someone wanted to harm themselves? What then?"
SCP-9743: "Well, I don't think the spell would work, or the wizard wouldn't receive damage. I'm not sure though, never got to know the answer."
SCP-239: "... Hey, I have a weird question to ask you."
SCP-9743: "Yeah?"
SCP-239: "Say, if I wanted to try something... You would stop me, right?"
SCP-9743: "Well... Why you ask that?"
SCP-239: "Just say that I have an idea. An idea that involves magic, but could potentially harm myself."
SCP-9743: "... Better don't try. Do it only when you're safe, if you don't know what can happen."
SCP-239: "I will be safe! I-I've thought everything through. There is no way anything bad will happen! So... You'll let me do it?"
SCP-9743: "No. And don't think about it. Better let it easy, and done."
SCP-239: "But I already thought everything through! I've planned everything carefully, so I don't see how anything can go wrong! If you just let me try it once, that would be better than- wait... Do you care about me or not?"
SCP-9743: "... While I have you in front of me, and no one else is there to take care of you, I feel I'm the one that has to do so and take care about you, so... I guess?"
SCP-239: "Then why are you refusing to let me try what I want to do?"
SCP-9743: "Because is risky? At least try it when I'm not near."
SCP-239: "So you don't care if I'm doing something that can hurt me when you're not around?"
SCP-9743: "If I don't know, how am I supposed to stop you? That would make you learn by yourself though."
SCP-239: "What if I don't learn by myself, huh?! What if I do something incredibly stupid and I... I..."
SCP-9743: "... Are you trying to make me become your parent or something?"
SCP-239: "No! It's not anything like that...! It's about the fact that you don't seem to care about me!"
SCP-9743: Sighs before speaking. "Just... I did learn, and prefer be alone. I honestly don't care about anyone, and is the first thing I learnt by the hard way. So, please, I don't want to do anything or be involved, thanks."
SCP-239: "You... You don't care about anyone? No one? Not even a... A friend?"
SCP-9743: "I don't have friends, and want it stay that way."
SCP-239: "You... You din't have any friends?"
SCP-9743: "Come on, it's time for your nap."
SCP-9743 turned SCP-239 around, and started to push her towards the containment cell's door, wanting to be alone, and end the interaction immediately.
SCP-239: "Hey! Wait, what are you doing?! I don't wanna nap! I'm not even tired!"
SCP-9743: "But I am of dealing with others. I have a hard day today, and want to relax and not have to deal with anything, so please, practice risk by your own, and learn."
SCP-239: "B-but... I don't want to be left alone! And I don't want to take a nap!"
SCP-9743: "And I don't want to deal with anything, and much less to have to deal with someone who is trying to manipulate me very clearly. So, I don't like emotional manipulation."
SCP-239 stopped struggling, and gave up on trying to refuse with SCP-9743, she sighed before the containment cell's door was opened, and guards leaded SCP-239 back to her containment chamber. She didn't wanted to admit, but she was trying to manipulate SCP-9743, attempting to make him worry and feel bad for not letting her do what she wanted to do, as how she thought about herself, as the little brat she was.
After the interaction, Dr. Sophia Adler did an interview to SCP-9743 again, in search for see how would he answer this time, and his answer were...
SCP-9743: "I already had enough dealing with kids, not only that are physically, but also mentally. I'm also done with dealing with little girls who have the ability to manipulate reality. I'm just tired of all of that..."
During the interview, SCP-9743 shown to be very expressive with his hands and interacting with his body, than talking, as some times, he struggled. Once, he acted as he was going to throw up, but instead of normal, used the gesture of his hands as were everything, rolling them while moving them slowly from his neck to more in front of him and down.
SCP-9743: "It's just... Is like one behind another... Your world always being manipulated over and over again... You just lose track at some point... Even of what is real or not, and... I just... I don't even know though..."
Then, SCP-9743 struggled with his nerves, and was unable to answer properly, without repeating the same words while trying to speak normally.
Evaluation Report by Dr. Alexander Grimm on SCP-9743's Interaction with SCP-239
Subject: SCP-9743
Evaluator: Dr. Alexander Grimm
Date: 03/16/2022
Experiment Overview:
This experiment aimed to observe SCP-9743's behavioral response to SCP-239 ("The Witch Child"), a powerful reality-bender with the appearance and mindset of a child. The test sought to assess SCP-9743's capacity for interpersonal interaction, its tolerance for manipulation, and its emotional resilience when confronted with a being capable of reality alteration.
Initial Interaction:
SCP-9743's Reaction to SCP-239:
SCP-9743 appeared visibly surprised upon seeing a child enter its containment cell. Its initial reaction—remaining seated while displaying a neutral expression—demonstrated restraint, though its curiosity and slight unease were evident. SCP-9743 showed no outward aggression and instead engaged SCP-239 with dialogue, balancing intrigue and skepticism.
SCP-239's Behavior:
SCP-239 approached SCP-9743 with cautious curiosity, displaying a mix of pride in her anomalous abilities and a desire for validation. Her remarks about SCP-9743 being "weird and creepy" were met with an unbothered response, as SCP-9743 acknowledged its appearance with an air of self-awareness and mild humor.
Behavioral Dynamics:
Discussion of Abilities:
SCP-9743 and SCP-239 exchanged information about their respective anomalous abilities. While SCP-239 displayed excitement about her reality-bending capabilities, SCP-9743 responded with subdued skepticism, particularly at the mention of "determination." Its reaction became noticeably darker and more suspicious when SCP-239 elaborated on her spells and expressed curiosity about SCP-9743's powers.
SCP-9743 demonstrated wariness throughout the exchange, as evidenced by its suspicious and reluctant tone when discussing its abilities. This caution reflected an awareness of the dangers posed by SCP-239's naivety and potential for reckless misuse of her powers.
Philosophical Discussion on Magic:
The interaction delved into the theoretical limitations of magic and self-harm. SCP-9743 provided a practical and logical perspective, emphasizing that spells are typically designed for defense and attack against external forces, not self-harm. SCP-239's questions about using magic to harm oneself appeared to unsettle SCP-9743, reflecting a divergence in their understanding of power and responsibility.
Manipulative Behavior by SCP-239:
SCP-239's attempts to manipulate SCP-9743 emotionally became evident when she framed her intentions as a plea for care and attention. SCP-9743, however, remained perceptive and dismissed these attempts, stating explicitly that it disliked emotional manipulation. Its decision to end the interaction and guide SCP-239 to the door underscored its boundaries and preference for minimal interpersonal involvement.
Post-Interaction Observations:
SCP-9743's Emotional Strain:
During the follow-up interview conducted by Dr. Sophia Adler, SCP-9743 expressed visible frustration and exhaustion with the interaction. Its remarks indicated a deep-seated aversion to engaging with individuals who exhibit immaturity or manipulative tendencies, whether physically or mentally. SCP-9743's gestures, including mimicking nausea and rolling its hands, conveyed a strong sense of emotional and psychological fatigue.
SCP-9743's statements, particularly its reference to the frequent manipulation of its "world," suggest past experiences with reality-benders or similar anomalies that have left lasting emotional scars. This adds a layer of complexity to its psychological profile, revealing a strong resistance to further entanglement with such entities.
Verbal and Nonverbal Communication:
SCP-9743 struggled to articulate its thoughts during the interview, frequently repeating words and using exaggerated gestures to compensate for its verbal difficulties. This pattern suggests that the interaction with SCP-239 may have triggered unresolved psychological stress, contributing to its difficulty in maintaining coherent communication.
Key Insights:
Boundaries and Autonomy:
SCP-9743 consistently emphasized its desire for independence and minimal involvement with others, particularly individuals who require emotional or physical caretaking. This preference aligns with its stated goal of avoiding attachments and maintaining a solitary existence.
Emotional Aversion to Reality Manipulation:
SCP-9743's visible discomfort and references to repeated "manipulation of its world" point to a significant emotional aversion to reality-bending anomalies. This aversion likely stems from past experiences where SCP-9743's sense of reality was destabilized, contributing to its distrust of SCP-239 and her abilities.
Resistance to Emotional Manipulation:
SCP-9743's blunt dismissal of SCP-239's attempts to evoke guilt or concern highlights its perceptiveness and unwillingness to be swayed by emotional tactics. This trait suggests a hardened emotional state that may serve as a protective mechanism against potential exploitation.
Recommendations:
Limited Exposure to Reality-Benders:
SCP-9743's interactions with reality-bending entities should be minimized to prevent exacerbation of its psychological stress. Future tests involving such anomalies should be approached with caution, ensuring SCP-9743 is given sufficient time to recover between interactions.
Psychological Evaluation:
SCP-9743's visible distress and difficulty articulating its thoughts during the interview warrant a thorough psychological evaluation. This evaluation should explore its past experiences with reality manipulation and the long-term impact on its mental state.
Emotional Profiling:
Continued analysis of SCP-9743's aversion to emotional manipulation and its preference for solitude may provide insights into its motivations and behavioral triggers. Understanding these factors could inform more effective containment and interaction protocols.
Supportive Framework for Interaction:
If SCP-9743 is to engage with emotionally or mentally immature anomalies, clear boundaries should be established, and interactions should be closely monitored to prevent undue stress.
Conclusion:
SCP-9743's interaction with SCP-239 revealed significant insights into its psychological and emotional framework. Its wariness of reality-bending abilities, coupled with its resistance to manipulation and preference for solitude, highlights a complex personality shaped by past experiences. While SCP-9743 displayed patience and restraint during the interaction, its post-event behavior underscored the toll such encounters take on its mental state.
