School Days | A Shadow Slave Fanfic

Chapter 9: Chapter 9

Cooking was a talent that Nephis prided herself in. Although she had servants who were ready to cook the best meals possible at merely moment's notice for her, she vehemently refused in favour of having them teach her how to cook instead.

Independence wasn't a goal to Nephis, it was the standard. Moments like these, cooking for Sunny as he slept in his room were what she had strived to craft her cooking skills from scratch to be able to accomplish. A ring at her doorbell distracted Nephis from her gliding movements across the kitchen but only for moments as she focused her attention back onto her cooking once more.

Kai's melodious voice echoed its way through her home as Nephis resisted the urge to greet him in favour of focusing on her cooking. Usually, Kai wasn't present in school as he continued to spread his excellent music wherever he went. But on rare occasions he dropped by to visit her, and this was one of them.

Wit him, came Effie. She made it no secret that she was ogling Kai however he didn't pay it much attention, eyes glancing around the room as he searched for Nephis. Moving to ask, he was cut off by one of the maids who predicted his question with scary accuracy.

"Lady Nephis is cooking for her…guest." The slight delay that was left as she said the word friends sent alarms ringing through Kai's head as a mischievous smile settled itself across his face. Turning to Effie, who was wiping drool off her face, Kai smiled pleasantly.

"Do you know anything of this friend that Neph has made?" Effie's mischievous smile outshined his in moments as she scanned the house for any trace of Nephis new friend. Unconsciously, they had already walked into the kitchen where Nephis had her hair tied up and an apron tightly wrapped around her waist.

"Hey Neph! Where's your boy toy?" Nephis face became stone still as she continued cooking, ignoring Effie's question. Kai picked up where she left off as he questioned her too "I heard that you've made a new friend, which is surprising on its own. But it's a boy!?"

Mock surprise erupted from his tone as Nephis glanced back at him with an annoyed expression. "Why do I feel insulted? What do you mean you're surprised I made friends, I'm very…sociable." Kai didn't need to be a lie detector to tell that Nephis didn't believe her own words as he shook his head at her slowly.

"Yeah…sociable. But what type of boy did he have to be to meet up to your supremely high standards, and have you excited to cook for him no less!?" At the last comment, Nephis face burned red as she turned off the fire under the stove. Thankfully, she had already finished cooking by the time they had arrived.

"Is it that obvious I'm excited?" She grumbled before turning to the two. "He's nice, speaking of which I shouldn't let him go hungry any longer." Before waiting for a reply, Nephis burst past the two of them with speed that would put many runners to shame.

Arriving at his door, Nephis lightly knocked receiving no reply. Deciding to take matters into her own hands, she shifted the door open slightly only for Sunny to already be there, standing at the door with water cascading from every inch of his body. He had a towel on his shoulder too, indicating Nephis was interrupting something.

"I'll come back in a second then." She commented, turning around to leave. However, Sunny caught her hand in his own barring her exit. "It's fine, you can stay here just give me a second to dry off." Opening his door wider, he turned around and made his way deeper into his room before wiping his body off gently and turning to Nephis.

"I smell something amazing; did you cook?" A smile beamed across his face as his eyes shone with excitement. Nephis nodded indifferently before Sunny burst past the door and bolted downstairs, not even bothering to put a shirt back on. Horror arrived on her face as she realised, he was shirtless too late, grabbing the nearest article of clothing before following him.

Despite appearances, when he wanted to be, Sunny was fast. Extremely fast. By the time she had made her way down the stairs, Sunny was already seated at the dining table with an eager smile on his face as he awaited to be served. It seemed Effie had noticed him first.

"Woah, I didn't know Nephis kept this body all to herself." She teased; Sunny stared at her blankly before slowly blood rushed to his face. Covering his eyes in an attempt to disappear from the world, Sunny ignored her comment until he felt her extend her hand.

"We've met before, but you didn't seem like you were in a very social mood. I'm Effie, and the magnificent, glorious looking guy back there is Kai." Upon laying eyes on the aforementioned Kai, Sunny's eyebrow twitched in annoyance. The young man was a little too good looking for his liking.

Before much conversation could continue, Nephis finally appeared at the table, panting slightly it took effort to even try to keep up with Sunny's speed. Gathering herself for a few moments, she walked towards Sunny before handing him a shirt. Smiling to show his thanks, Sunny slid the shirt onto his body as Effie whined in disappointment.

Disappearing into the kitchen, Nephis returned with a bowl of fried rice in hand before placing it in front of Sunny. Before he could attempt to help her, everyone had been served. Sunny ate quickly and in silence, his eyes still unconsciously glancing around the room with suspicion.

"I'll excuse myself first, I need to do something." Nephis commented. Leaving Effie and Sunny in a room together wasn't to her tastes but her mission took precedence. Disappearing into Sunny's room, she 'borrowed' his used towel before replacing it with a dry one. Burying his towel under her pillow with an indifferent expression before leaving.

An hour had passed, it was quite a pleasant period Sunny had spent with the three. He even found himself smiling and laughing often at Effie and Kai, yet the entire time his eyes remained constantly focused on Nephis. "Sunny, I've wondered. Would it be ok if I signed us up for self defence classes?"

The question took Sunny aback as he raised an eyebrow. "I'm not against it really, but I think I've had enough fighting for an entire lifetime." Nephis nodded "I agree, that's why with self defence classes people will think twice about even wanting to engage with you. And who knows, it might be…fun."

"I've had a few candidates for teachers lined up, maybe you could check them out if you're interested." Nephis glanced at her phone as she scrolled through potential candidates with a focused expression. Kai and Effie leaned over her shoulder as they analysed the candidates too.

"I assume the self defence classes are because Sunny got beat up right?" Effie's voice caught Sunny's attention as he glanced up with wide eyes. He hadn't wanted that topic to be brought back up any further than this. Kai's head snapped towards Sunny with a worried expression.

"If you want, I can hire you a bodyguard." Sunny shook his head vehemently as he got up from the table and made his way to Nephis, leaning over her shoulder to look at the potential candidates. With the life he's lived, Sunny didn't feel like he needed any. Most of his agreement to this was for Nephis part, lest she get injured from associating with him.

Suddenly, Sunny's eyes landed on a single man. He had golden flowing hair with golden eyes, at the sight of him, Sunny's breathe quickened, he placed a hand on his chest as he staggered back. 'Gilead, what's Gilead doing so close to here!' Nephis turned around with a look of shock on her face, rushing to Sunny to help him.

But before she could intervene, Sunny passed out.
