Chapter 4: chapter 4
The victory over the dragon brought no joy to the people of Carven. As the massive beast lay dead, its blood seeping into the ruined streets, the surviving citizens gathered in silence. The air was heavy with the weight of loss—families torn apart, homes obliterated, and countless lives snuffed out in a single night.
Eli, Clara, and Jaren stood at the center of the devastation, their bodies battered and spirits drained. For a moment, none of them spoke. The gravity of their pyrrhic victory was undeniable.
"We won," Clara said, her voice trembling. She clutched her staff, using it to support herself as exhaustion threatened to pull her to the ground.
Eli stared at the horizon, where the sun began to rise over the smoldering ruins of their city. "At what cost?" he muttered. His body ached, every muscle screaming in agony from the toll of his Boost. Blood still dripped from his lips, a stark reminder of how close he had come to pushing too far.
Jaren, leaning heavily on his sword, surveyed the wreckage. "This isn't over. Not for Carven. Not for any of us." He took a deep breath, though his ribs protested the motion. "If we don't act now, this will just happen again."
The three exchanged glances, their exhaustion momentarily pushed aside. They knew the fight wasn't just about survival—it was about ensuring something like this never happened again.
As Carven's survivors began clearing the bodies and debris, grim news arrived from outside their borders. Messengers brought reports of similar attacks in cities across the world. Each account told the same story: monsters emerging from mysterious portals, wreaking havoc on unprepared populations. Many cities had been wiped off the map, their defenders overwhelmed.
"The portals," Jaren said grimly as he listened to one such report. "They're the source of this chaos."
Eli clenched his fists. "Then we need to find out how to stop them. We can't just sit around waiting for the next wave."
Clara nodded, her voice resolute. "If this is happening everywhere, we're not alone in this fight. There have to be others like us out there—people who've awakened.
The Birth of the Hunter Association
Carven's leadership, alongside surviving scientists and strategists, convened to discuss their next steps. The city's mayor, a weary but determined woman named Alina Vos, called for a city-wide assembly.
"We cannot let our losses paralyze us," Alina said, addressing the crowd. "We've survived the worst, but this is only the beginning. To protect Carven and rebuild stronger than ever, we must take action."
Under her guidance, the Hunter Association was born. Its purpose was clear:
To study the monsters and portals that had devastated their world.
To organize and support awakened individuals, ensuring they could harness their powers effectively.
To create strategies and weapons capable of defending against future invasions.
The association quickly set up research labs to analyze the remains of the slain monsters. Their experiments led to the discovery of monster cores—small, glowing orbs found within the creatures. These cores contained condensed energy that could be harnessed for various purposes:
Weaponry: Blades infused with core energy could cut through the toughest monster hides ,armory:. armors created from monster cores can absorb some certain amount of damage depending on the core quality.
Infrastructure: Cores powered makeshift energy grids, accelerating the rebuilding of Carven.
Medicine: Some cores had regenerative properties and helps replenish mana.
As the association delved deeper into its research, more portals began to appear across the land. At first, these rifts were unpredictable and terrifying, spewing forth waves of monsters. But as scientists studied their patterns, they discovered that the portals emitted a measurable energy field—a phenomenon they called mana flux.
To better understand these rifts, a team of awakened hunters and researchers ventured into one. What they found was astonishing:
Mana Stones: Crystalline formations embedded in the portal landscapes, brimming with raw energy. These stones became a crucial resource, used to forge stronger weapons, fuel advanced technologies, and even stabilize smaller portals.
New Worlds: The portals led to dongeon filled with strange landscapes and untold dangers. But they also offered opportunities—resources that could be harvested to rebuild humanity's shattered world.
The first wave of awakened individuals, now organized under the Hunter Association, formed Carven's inaugural guild: The Vanguard. Its members were a mix of battle-hardened survivors Jaren, Eli, and Clara, and newly awakened recruits eager to prove themselves.
The guild's primary mission was twofold:
.Close high-risk portals before they unleashed more monsters.
. collect monster corpse, cores and mana stones.
The Vanguard exploits inspired others to join the fight. Soon, more guilds began to form, each specializing in different aspects of monster hunting and portal exploration. This newfound unity gave Carven hope—a chance to stand tall in the face of an uncertain future.
Months passed, and Carven transformed. What had once been a city in ruins now stood as a beacon of resilience:
Monster cores powered towering skyscrapers and defensive barriers.
Guilds trained tirelessly, their members honing their skills to face the growing threat of portals.
The Hunter Association expanded its reach, connecting with other cities to share knowledge and resources.
To manage the increasing number of portals, the association developed a mana-level detection device. This device measured the energy emitted by each portal, classifying them by threat level. With this technology, guilds could prepare accordingly, ensuring no one faced overwhelming odds unprepared.
Eli, Jaren, and Clara stood together on the balcony of a newly rebuilt tower, overlooking the bustling city below. The streets buzzed with activity as workers, hunters, and civilians worked side by side to rebuild their home.
"It's amazing," Clara said softly. "We were on the brink of destruction, and now… look at us."
Eli crossed his arms, his expression pensive. "We've come far, but we can't let our guard down. The portals aren't stopping."
Clara rolling her eyes. '' can u stop being biased for once who doesn't know that portals keep opening up..... urgg.''
Jaren placed a hand on his sword, his gaze steady. "Then we keep fighting. For Carven. For everyone we've lost. And for what's still to come."
As the three watched the sunset over their city. Together, they were ready to face whatever came next.
