Chapter 18: chapter 18
Kael stepped onto the 50th floor, his breathing steady but his heart pounding. The air was thin, the atmosphere crackling with an overwhelming energy. Every fiber of his being told him this floor was different more dangerous, more unforgiving. The ground beneath him shimmered like molten glass, reflecting the blood-red skies above. A deafening roar echoed through the barren expanse, shaking the very foundation of the tower.
Kael froze, his eyes narrowing as he looked ahead. In the distance, two massive figures emerged from the crimson haze. The Valstrax dragons the same monsters that had slaughtered his guild master and mates, and left him to die a broken man. Memories of that day flooded his mind the screams of his comrades, the searing pain, and the overwhelming despair. His fists clenched, the knuckles white with rage.
"Riven..." he whispered, his voice low and filled with fury. The memory of his fallen guild mates burned in his chest like an unquenchable flame. This wasn't just another floor. This wasn't just another fight. This was vengeance.
The Valstrax dragons were larger than he remembered, their sleek metallic bodies gleaming like obsidian armor. Their wings were massive, pulsating with energy, and their aura alone was suffocating. One of the dragons lowered its head, its glowing red eyes locking onto Kael. The other spread its wings wide, causing the air to vibrate with an ear-piercing hum. They weren't just fast they were speed incarnate, their movements so rapid that Kael's eyes could barely keep up.
But Kael wasn't the same weak hunter. Not anymore.
The first dragon lunged, its body vanishing in a blur of red light. Kael's instincts screamed, and he barely managed to sidestep as the ground where he had stood exploded into a crater. The shockwave sent him flying, but he twisted midair, landing in a crouch. His heart raced as the second dragon followed, its claws slicing through the air like jagged blades.
Kael raised his sword just in time, the sword intercepting the attack. Sparks flew as the blade clashed against the dragon's claws, the force of the impact nearly buckling Kael's knees. But he held firm, his muscles straining as he pushed back.
The dragon snarled, its breath like a furnace, and Kael retaliated with a swift slash across its chest. The blade cut deep, but the dragon's armored hide resisted, leaving only a shallow wound. The second dragon took flight, its wings beating with such force that the wind alone sent Kael skidding backward.
Kael's eyes narrowed. Speed alone wasn't enough. If he wanted to survive this, he'd need to outthink them.
The dragons coordinated their assault with terrifying precision. One came from above, its claws glowing with a fiery red energy, while the other flanked Kael with its gaping maw, preparing to unleash a torrent of draconic breath. Kael's mind raced as he darted between their attacks, his movements a blur.
The ground erupted in flames as the first dragon's breath engulfed the area, but Kael was faster. He disappeared in an instant, his speed now rivaling theirs. The air cracked and sparked as he reappeared behind the second dragon, slashing upward with all his might. his sword sliced through the base of the dragon's wing, drawing a screech of pain as black ichor sprayed into the air.
Before he could follow up, the dragon struck with its tail, the impact sending Kael tumbling across the battlefield. He gritted his teeth, rolling to his feet just as the second dragon unleashed another blast of draconic breath, the flames scorching everything in their path.
Kael didn't run. Instead, he charged forward, his agility and speed now matching the dragons' own. As the flames licked at his heels, he leaped high into the air, spinning mid-flight to dodge the claws of the first dragon. His sword ignited with mana as he drove it straight into the second dragon's neck.
The beast howled in agony, shaking violently to dislodge him, but Kael held on, driving the blade deeper. Its thrashing grew more erratic, and Kael was forced to leap away as the first dragon joined the fray, slamming into its injured kin.
Kael landed on shaky feet, his body battered but his mind sharp. His regeneration was working overtime, knitting his wounds as he analyzed their movements. The dragons were fast, deadly, and relentless but they were also reckless. And reckless enemies could be manipulated.
Kael focused his mana, his breathing steadying as a plan formed in his mind. He darted forward, slashing at the first dragon's legs before retreating. It roared, lunging after him, but Kael moved faster, leading it toward the second dragon. The two beasts snarled and snapped, their frustration mounting as Kael danced between them.
"Come on," he muttered, his voice low. "Just a little closer…"
The first dragon unleashed its draconic breath, a fiery inferno that scorched the earth. Kael dodged at the last second, the flames slamming into the second dragon instead. The injured beast screeched in fury, turning on its ally. For a moment, the two monsters locked eyes, their primal instincts overriding their coordination.
Kael seized the opportunity. Channeling all his remaining mana, he drove his sword into the ground, releasing a shockwave that destabilized the area. The dragons, already locked in a violent clash, stumbled as the ground cracked beneath them.
The second dragon lunged at the first, its jaws snapping shut around its ally's neck. The first retaliated with a fiery blast, their combined attacks creating a massive explosion that shook the entire floor. Kael shielded himself from the shockwave, his body trembling as he watched the two titans collapse in a heap of scorched and bloodied scales.
Kael stood amidst the carnage, his chest heaving as he lowered his sword. The battlefield was silent now, save for the crackling of flames. The two Valstrax dragons lay defeated, their massive forms slowly dissolving into ash.
He dropped to one knee, exhaustion washing over him. His body was battered, his mana nearly depleted, but he had done it. He had avenged Riven, his guild mates, and his past self.
A faint smile crossed his lips as he looked up at the red sky. "This time… I won."
