Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The Raid on the Armory and War

Under the Cover of Darkness

The night sky was heavy with clouds, shrouding the city in an eerie gloom. The streets near the Eastern Armory were unusually quiet, but Kai knew better than to assume it was unguarded.

Dressed in dark cloaks, he and his team moved through the alleys, avoiding patrols. The plan was simple: get in, take what they needed, and get out before the Duke's forces realized what was happening.

Lyra crouched beside him, whispering, "The front entrance is too well guarded. What's the play?"

Kai scanned the structure—a fortified stone building with runed iron gates and watchtowers on either side. "We go in through the side. Vale, you handle the locks. Edric, be ready for a fight."

Edric grinned, gripping his warhammer. "Always."

Breaking In

Vale worked quickly, his lockpicking skills proving invaluable. The moment the side gate clicked open, they slipped inside.

The armory was vast—racks of enchanted weapons lined the walls, crates of armor stacked high, and shelves of alchemical potions.

Kai's eyes gleamed. If they could take even half of this, the rebellion would have a real chance.

Lyra moved swiftly, grabbing bows and quivers of enchanted arrows. Edric lifted a massive adamantine shield, testing its weight.

But as Kai reached for a blacksteel longsword, a chill ran down his spine.

Something was wrong.

The Duke's Trap

A slow clap echoed through the armory.

From the shadows, Lucian Ravencourt stepped forward, his violet eyes glowing with amusement. "Well, well… Look what we have here."

Kai immediately drew his sword, but Lucian raised a hand, and dark energy flared around him.

"You really thought it would be that easy?" Lucian smirked. "My dear brother knew you'd come. So he left me a little gift to welcome you."

With a snap of his fingers, the walls trembled. Hidden panels slid open, revealing elite guards clad in enchanted armor, weapons drawn.

Lyra cursed. "It's a trap!"

Edric raised his hammer. "Then let's break our way out!"

Battle in the Armory

The fight erupted in chaos.

Kai parried a strike from a heavily armored knight, spinning to drive his blade through the gaps in their armor. Vale moved like a shadow, daggers flashing as he cut down guards.

Lyra leaped onto a crate, loosing enchanted arrows that exploded on impact, sending enemies reeling.

But Lucian? He didn't even move.

Instead, he watched with a lazy smirk, fingers glowing with dark magic.

Then, with a simple gesture, the very shadows in the armory came to life.

Dark tendrils wrapped around Kai's legs, pulling him down. Lyra screamed as the same shadows snatched her bow away.

Edric roared and charged at Lucian—only for the noble to vanish in a swirl of darkness, appearing behind him.

Lucian whispered something, and suddenly Edric froze, his eyes wide with fear.

Kai struggled against the shadows, his mind racing. Lucian wasn't just using magic—he was wielding fear itself.

A Desperate Escape

Kai forced his body to move, his willpower pushing through Lucian's magic. With a surge of strength, he broke free, slicing through the shadow tendrils.

"Everyone, fall back!" he shouted.

Vale tossed a smoke bomb, filling the armory with thick, choking fog. In the confusion, they made a run for it.

Kai could hear Lucian's cold laughter behind them. "Run all you like, rebels. This is only the beginning."

As they stumbled out into the night, bruised and bloodied but alive, Kai knew one thing for certain—

They had just declared war.

War Has Begun

Retreat Into the Underground

The night air was thick with tension as Kai and his team fled through the winding backstreets of the city. Their bodies ached, their breaths came in ragged gasps, but they couldn't stop—not yet.

The moment they burst into the hidden entrance of the Underground Sanctuary, Vale slammed the metal doors shut behind them, locking the heavy bolts. They were safe… for now.

Lyra leaned against the stone wall, pressing a hand to her bleeding arm. "That was a disaster."

Edric wiped sweat from his brow, frustration burning in his eyes. "It was a trap from the start."

Kai remained silent, his fists clenched. Lucian had played them like pawns.

Vale, still catching his breath, muttered, "We underestimated them. The Duke knew we'd come for the armory… and he sent his brother to toy with us."

Kai exhaled sharply. "Lucian isn't just another noble. He's a monster in human skin."

Silence fell over the group. They had come so close to securing weapons that could turn the tide of battle—only to barely escape with their lives.

But Kai wasn't going to let this defeat break them.

"This war isn't over," he said, his voice low but firm. "We might have lost the armory, but we learned something valuable."

Lyra frowned. "And what's that?"

Kai's eyes darkened. "The Duke thinks he's untouchable. We need to show him he isn't."

The Duke's Wrath

Meanwhile, back at Ravencourt Manor, the Duke stood in his grand chamber, listening as Lucian recounted the events at the armory.

"You let them escape?" Alistair Ravencourt's voice was cold, controlled—but beneath it was a dangerous edge.

Lucian smirked, reclining lazily in a chair. "Of course. Killing them now would be too easy. I want them to feel fear… to know that no matter what they do, they are always one step behind."

The Duke turned to the window, gazing out over his city. "You play with them like a cat with a mouse, Lucian. But I want results."

Lucian's smirk widened. "Then perhaps it's time we remind them who owns this city."

The Duke's fingers tightened around the hilt of his ceremonial dagger. "Burn the Underground. Flush them out. If they want war, we'll give them war."

The Rebellion Strikes Back

Three nights later, the streets of the capital erupted into chaos.

Kai and his rebels launched a series of coordinated attacks across the city—setting fire to supply wagons, ambushing noble caravans, and targeting the Duke's key outposts.

Every explosion, every act of defiance, sent a message:

The rebellion was no longer hiding.

Kai led one of the teams himself, striking a weapons convoy moving through the merchant district. He and Vale moved like shadows, cutting down the guards before they even had a chance to react.

By the time reinforcements arrived, the rebels had already vanished—taking the stolen weapons with them.

A Dangerous Proposition

Later that night, as Kai and Lyra planned their next move, a messenger arrived—a hooded figure who claimed to have information that could change everything.

They spoke in a hushed whisper.

"There is someone who wishes to meet with you. Someone who hates the Duke as much as you do."

Kai narrowed his eyes. "And why should I trust you?"

The hooded figure smirked. "Because they hold the key to bringing the Duke to his knees."

Kai exchanged a glance with Lyra.

This could be a trap.

Or… this could be the opportunity they needed to finally strike at the heart of their enemy.

Kai exhaled, then nodded. "Tell them we'll meet."

The war had truly begun.
