Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Shadows in the Dark

The Assassin's Calling Card

Kai knelt beside the fallen scout, his fingers grazing the hilt of the black dagger embedded in the man's chest. The blade gleamed under the dim lantern light, and an unmistakable insignia was carved into the handle—a coiled serpent biting its own tail.

Lyra sucked in a sharp breath. "That's the mark of the Viper's Hand."

Vale's face darkened. "The Duke has sent assassins after us."

Kai pulled the dagger free and held it up, studying the craftsmanship. This wasn't the work of ordinary killers—these were elite assassins, trained in magic, stealth, and silent execution. If the Duke had hired them, it meant he was done playing defense.

The war had taken a deadly turn.

A Race Against Time

Edric clenched his fists. "We need to move now. The longer we stay here, the more vulnerable we are."

Kai nodded. "We have two options: stay and fight, or relocate before they strike again."

Lyra shook her head. "No, we turn the tables on them. If we can eliminate the assassins before they regroup, we send a message—we're not easy prey."

Vale smirked. "I like the sound of that. But we need information first."

Kai looked toward the rooftops, his mind already forming a plan. "Then we hunt the hunters."

Tracking the Vipers

Using the dagger as a lead, the team followed the assassin's trail into the lower districts of Ravencourt. The streets were eerily quiet, shadows stretching long in the moonlight.

Kai moved silently, his senses sharp. Every instinct told him they were being watched.

Then—a whisper of movement.

A shadow detached from the alley. A blade flashed.

Kai spun, barely dodging the strike. His attacker wore a dark cloak, a mask covering their face. The assassin moved like a wraith, fast and precise.

Lyra fired an arrow—but the assassin deflected it with a twist of their dagger.

"Impressive," the assassin murmured. "But not good enough."

The Battle in the Alley

The fight erupted in a blur of steel and magic.

Kai's sword clashed against the assassin's twin daggers, sparks flying as they exchanged rapid blows. Lyra and Vale circled, looking for an opening, while Edric roared and charged, forcing the assassin to retreat.

For a moment, the assassin vanished—only to reappear behind Kai.

A cold whisper tickled his ear. "The Duke sends his regards."

A blade plunged toward his back.

At the last second, Kai twisted and caught the assassin's wrist, flipping them onto the cobblestone ground. The assassin barely had time to react before Vale's dagger pressed against their throat.

Kai knelt beside them, his eyes cold. "Who sent you?"

The assassin chuckled, even as blood dripped from their lips. "You already know."

Kai's grip tightened. "Then give the Duke a message—we're coming for him."

The War Escalates

By the time dawn broke, the assassin's body was left in the streets—a warning to the Duke's forces.

But in the depths of Ravencourt Manor, Duke Alistair received the message with an amused smirk.

Beside him, Lucian Ravencourt watched the flames in the fireplace, a glimmer of anticipation in his violet eyes.

"It seems the rebellion is bolder than I thought," the Duke mused.

Lucian smirked. "Good. Let's see what they're truly capable of."

A Storm on the Horizon

The Duke's Counterattack

Deep within Ravencourt Manor, the Duke stood before a grand war table, its surface carved with a detailed map of the city. His fingers traced over the key locations under his control—the palace district, the merchant quarter, and the heavily guarded eastern gates. But the outskirts, where the rebellion had taken root, were a growing stain on his dominion.

Lucian Ravencourt lounged in a chair across from him, violet eyes gleaming with intrigue. "So, dear brother, how do you plan to deal with these… pests?"

The Duke's lips curled into a smirk. "Simple. We burn them out."

With a wave of his hand, dark flames flickered across the map, consuming the areas held by the rebels.

"The assassins failed," the Duke continued. "But that only means one thing—it's time to bring the war to their doorstep."

Lucian leaned forward, his chains now gone, his power slowly returning. "And what do you need from me?"

The Duke's gaze hardened. "Your magic. Your strength. And your ruthlessness."

Lucian chuckled. "Oh, Alistair… You really shouldn't have unchained me."

Kai's Strategy Meeting

Back at the rebels' hideout, Kai, Lyra, Edric, and Vale gathered in a dimly lit chamber. The night's battle had given them a victory, but it also made one thing clear—they were running out of time.

Kai spread out a map of the city, marking the supply routes, guard patrols, and weak points in the Duke's defenses. "We've hit their supply lines, taken down assassins, and built alliances with some of the outlying districts. But that won't be enough."

Lyra frowned. "You're right. The Duke has yet to retaliate—but he will. And when he does, it won't be just assassins next time."

Vale leaned against the wall, flipping a dagger between his fingers. "Then what's our next move?"

Kai's eyes darkened. "We strike first."

The Plan to Seize the Armory

Kai pointed to a location on the map. "Here. The Eastern Armory. It's where the Duke stores his enchanted weapons and armor."

Edric's eyes widened. "You want us to raid the armory? That place is crawling with elite guards!"

Kai nodded. "That's exactly why we need it. If we take it, we arm our people with weapons strong enough to stand against the Duke's forces."

Lyra's brow furrowed. "And if we fail?"

Kai's voice was steady. "Then we die fighting."

A heavy silence filled the room.

Then Vale smirked. "Well, when you put it like that… how can I say no?"

Lyra exhaled. "If we're doing this, we need to move quickly. The longer we wait, the tighter their defenses will become."

Kai rolled up the map. "Then let's prepare. Tomorrow, we take the first real step toward toppling the Duke."

A Shadow Watches

Unbeknownst to them, a hooded figure stood in the darkness just beyond the hideout, watching. Listening.

A smile curled their lips as they whispered into a black crystal.

"They're planning to attack the armory," the figure murmured.

On the other end of the crystal, the Duke's voice echoed back—smooth, calculated.

"Good. Let them come."
