Chapter 68: Chapter 68: Your Shooting is Amazing
In a large abandoned warehouse, a fierce battle between a group of ghouls and the CCG was underway.
"Break through! Quick!"
"We can't, boss! The retreat is blocked."
"These CCG investigators have gone insane!"
"Rat-tat-tat!"
A burst of gunfire rang out. Su Xiao stood behind a tall concrete pillar, which was getting riddled with bullets, sending up clouds of dust.
He was fighting against a ghoul faction of over a hundred members, led by an S-rated ghoul.
Surprisingly, this group was heavily armed with firearms. Judging by the firepower, they had at least a hundred guns, both long and short.
This was the third ghoul group Su Xiao had targeted since the battle at the abandoned building, and it was also the last ghoul stronghold he could locate.
"First Class White Night, their firepower is too strong. We can't break through," said Mado Akira, standing beside Su Xiao.
Bullets continuously struck the concrete pillar, raising dust. Occasionally, a grenade explosion echoed around them.
Just as Su Xiao was about to peek out, he suddenly felt a prickling sensation on the back of his head. Instinctively, he pushed off the ground, grabbing Mado Akira and leaping behind another concrete pillar nearby.
This was a massive warehouse, with over a hundred concrete pillars, each about a meter wide.
"Boom!"
Just after Su Xiao moved, a wave of heat hit his back, and the shockwave from the explosion made him stagger.
Mado Akira slumped behind the pillar, staring in disbelief at the explosion's aftermath.
"A rocket launcher?!"
Not only was Mado Akira shocked, but Su Xiao was also taken aback. He hadn't expected the ghouls to have a rocket launcher.
He raised his automatic rifle and fired blindly at the ghouls without aiming, just to suppress their fire.
"Rat-tat-tat!"
Two screams from the ghoul side confirmed that Su Xiao had somehow hit them, and a notification popped up—his CCG contribution points had increased.
It was pure luck; Su Xiao swore he hadn't aimed at all.
"First Class White Night, your shooting is impressive," Mado Akira remarked, unaware of Su Xiao's haphazard shooting style, only seeing the downed ghouls.
"Well, it's... alright," Su Xiao replied, feeling a bit awkward.
Ghoul extermination usually involved close combat, but this had turned into a full-blown gunfight.
"Boss White Night, we can't hold on much longer," reported a middle-aged investigator named Itakura, holding a riot shield.
Some of the investigators who had followed Su Xiao to clear out multiple ghoul groups had started calling him "Boss" out of respect.
"Itakura, where did you get that?" Su Xiao asked, eyeing the shield with interest.
"During a backdoor assault, a ghoul was holding this. I blew him up with a grenade," Itakura replied proudly, handing over the shield to Su Xiao.
The shield was jet black, about 1.4 meters tall, with a rectangular viewing port embedded with bulletproof glass at the top.
"Boss White Night, this is a Chinese-made FXF6-T riot shield, rated at level six! It can block anything short of a heavy sniper."
Su Xiao took the shield. It felt heavy and reliable in his hand.
"Everyone, get ready. I'm going to create an opening. Prepare to wipe out these ghouls!"
With the shield in his left hand and his sword in his right, Su Xiao charged out from behind the pillar.
"Rat-tat-tat!"
Through the bulletproof glass in the shield, Su Xiao saw a row of ghoul-held guns firing, their black barrels spitting fire and sending a barrage of bullets his way.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
A dense volley of bullets struck the shield, slowing Su Xiao's advance. The force of each bullet was considerable, and there were dozens, even hundreds of them.
Seeing Su Xiao charging with a shield, the ghoul leader, a former mercenary, was stunned. He recognized Su Xiao—the man who had killed six of his subordinates in mere seconds in close combat.
"Stop him! Don't let him break through!" the mercenary ghoul ordered, his facial scars twitching as a cruel smile formed on his lips. Suddenly, he reached for something behind him: a massive sniper rifle, over two meters long.
"Let's see you block this!"
With a vicious glint in his eyes, the mercenary ghoul was about to pull the trigger. At this range, he didn't even need to aim.
Su Xiao, watching through the bulletproof glass, saw this unfolding but remained calm.
He put his sword away, retrieved a metal sphere the size of a fist from his back, and tossed it toward the mercenary ghoul.
Clink.
The sound of metal hitting the floor echoed as the grenade rolled to the ghouls' feet.
"Damn it!"
The mercenary ghoul cursed, dropping the sniper rifle and curling into a ball as his kagune wrapped around him.
"Boom!"
A wave of fire erupted, filling the warehouse as dust rained down from the ceiling.
Fragments from the explosion rattled against Su Xiao's shield with a loud clattering noise.
This was a high-explosive grenade, something Su Xiao had applied for twice from CCG headquarters before they reluctantly approved it.
Most of the ghouls' firepower fell silent as the scent of burning flesh filled the air.
A mangled leg, charred black, landed in front of Su Xiao. The shredded pant leg was still smoldering.
Su Xiao had wanted to use the grenade earlier, but the ghouls' suppressive fire was so intense that throwing it from a distance would likely have resulted in it being shot out of the air.
"Charge!"
At Su Xiao's command, the investigators broke from cover and rushed forward.
Su Xiao led the charge, advancing on the ghouls.
The mercenary ghoul staggered to his feet, dazed and confused. His kagune had been blown apart, blood trickled from his ears, and he was in a state of shock.
Before he could recover, Su Xiao was upon him, decapitating him with a swift strike before moving on to other targets.
The battle quickly turned into a one-sided slaughter. What had once been an even fight was over in minutes.
Half an hour later, the only ones left breathing in the warehouse were the CCG investigators.
Su Xiao sat on a broken chair to rest. The chair had been damaged by gunfire, leaving it with only three legs, making it uncomfortable to sit on.
The investigators began gathering the ghoul corpses.
"First Class White Night, all ghouls have been eliminated. We took down 147 ghouls in total. Our losses are..." Mado Akira reported the status.
After hearing the report, Su Xiao nodded, signaling Mado Akira to handle the aftermath.
Tomorrow, Shinohara Yukinori would be transferred to the 20th ward. Su Xiao had already cleared out all the ghouls he could find in the 14th ward.
Little did Itori know, the map she casually drew had indirectly caused the deaths of over a thousand ghouls.
Su Xiao's mission completion rate now stood at:
[First Class Investigator, Contribution Points: 2053/2000. Do you wish to promote?]
Su Xiao chose to promote, and the notification from Reincarnation Paradise disappeared.
Now, all he had to do was wait for confirmation from CCG headquarters to complete the main mission.
This gave Su Xiao a sense of relief. He didn't want his fate tied to CCG.
Just as Su Xiao was beginning to relax, a new notification appeared from Reincarnation Paradise:
[The Hunter has eliminated 95% of the ghouls in the 14th ward. Of these, 34% were killed directly by the Hunter, and 46% were killed indirectly. 15% escaped the ward.]
[Due to the Hunter's actions, a large number of ghouls in the 14th ward have died or fled. The Hunter has completed the "Scavenger" achievement mission.]
[Achievement Mission: Scavenger. (Requires the Hunter to personally eliminate 30% or more of the ghouls in a specific area and cause the death or escape of 90% of the ghouls in that area.)]
[Scavenger Achievement Reward: +1 Attribute Point, +7% World Source.]
[Current World Source obtained: 14.3%.]
(End of Chapter)
