REINCARNATION PARADISE

Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Making a Name in the 14th Ward

The outskirts of the 14th Ward were a beautiful area, ideal for living, with its pleasant scenery and excellent geographical location. However, due to the rampant presence of ghouls, many humans had moved away, and the area had become desolate.

Inside an abandoned building, hundreds of ghouls were gathered. They exchanged information, traded "food," and some even sought out potential mates.

"Did you hear? The Auction House and the Cannibalistic District were wiped out by the CCG. Those fools were asking for it."

"How could I not hear? Every ghoul in the 14th Ward knows about it. The CCG transferred in a madman. His name is something like 'White...'"

"White Night. I heard about him from a friend who was in the Cannibalistic District. He saw that guy with his own eyes..."

A ghoul, who looked like a student, trailed off mid-sentence. The surrounding ghouls leaned in closer.

"Come on, don't stop halfway. Tell us what that lunatic, White Night, looks like. We need to know so we can avoid him if we ever run into him."

The student-like ghoul smirked, hands in his pockets, and looked at the others.

"Sigh... I'm starving. The CCG's pressure has been so intense lately, I haven't eaten in half a month."

The ghouls exchanged glances, understanding his unspoken request.

"Tagawa, don't you have some 'rations' left? Share some with him."

"Why me? My rations are for emergencies. As for this 'White Night' lunatic, I don't care to know what he looks like."

The group, eager for gossip, looked menacingly at the student ghoul.

"Come on, man, just tell us."

"I'm not scared or anything, okay? But we're all ghouls here, so life isn't easy for any of us."

The others smiled at each other. They weren't actually looking for a fight—just trying to intimidate him a little.

"Fine, fine. I get it. Now, let me tell you what I know..."

The student ghoul cleared his throat and began to recount the information he had, and the surrounding ghouls listened intently.

Meanwhile, outside the abandoned building, tall grass concealed numerous figures advancing slowly.

"Team One, take the left flank. Team Two, the right. Team Three, prepare for a frontal assault. Team Four, block off the large exit at the rear."

Su Xiao crouched in the grass, closing in on the building. The number of ghouls inside was significant. According to thermal scans, there were at least 240, possibly more.

If he charged in alone, he would be outnumbered. However, with the support of the other investigators, things would be different. He would lead the charge, while the others provided cover. After a bloody battle, they would surely be able to wipe out all the ghouls inside.

"Team One, ready."

"Team Two, ready."

"Team Three, ready."

"Team Four is in position."

Drawing his Dragon Flash sword, Su Xiao tapped his earpiece.

"Go."

With Su Xiao's command, the investigators from Teams One, Two, and Three simultaneously fired grenades into the building.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Dozens of metal canisters, similar to tear gas, were launched inside.

Initially, Su Xiao had wanted to use actual grenades to blow up the ghouls, but oddly enough, the CCG didn't stockpile them. The reason given by the armory was that grenades weren't particularly effective against ghouls and could endanger civilians.

Su Xiao found this explanation suspicious, considering they were operating in the countryside, far from any civilians. Perhaps the CCG was concerned about some of their more extreme investigators using explosives recklessly in urban areas? It wasn't impossible, but it seemed like a flimsy excuse.

Regardless, Su Xiao didn't care about CCG politics. His priority was completing the main storyline task. Digging too deeply into the CCG's inner workings could anger the higher-ups, jeopardizing his mission.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

A series of muffled explosions echoed from inside the building, and white gas spread rapidly throughout.

This wasn't ordinary tear gas—it was CRc gas. Once concentrated enough, CRc gas would significantly impact ghouls, reducing the activity of their Rc cells, making it difficult for them to deploy their kagune.

With the time right, Su Xiao charged toward the building, followed by dozens of investigators. The sounds of gunfire, clashing weapons, and screams filled the air as the battle immediately escalated.

"The CCG is here! Run!"

The ghouls inside panicked. The sudden CRc gas had prevented them from even using their kagune. But the building wasn't sealed, and the gas was quickly dissipating.

Su Xiao led the charge, cutting down several ghouls with his blade, clearing a path of blood. The investigators behind him covered his rear, allowing him to fight more freely. Ghouls fell one after another under his sword.

Two hours later, Su Xiao sat on the ground, covered in blood. He tore a piece of cloth from a nearby ghoul corpse and wiped down Dragon Flash.

The battle had lasted two full hours and had been brutal. The ghouls had attempted to flee, but Su Xiao had set up teams outside to block their escape.

By then, the CRc gas had been blown away by the wind, and the ghouls had gone berserk, fighting desperately.

After wiping off his blade, Su Xiao discarded the bloody cloth and sheathed Dragon Flash. Looking around, he saw piles of ghoul corpses, but not a single treasure chest had dropped. Perhaps his luck from the previous shiny chest had run out.

Despite the massacre, Su Xiao earned 367 CCG contribution points. His mission progress now stood at:

[First-Class Investigator, Contribution: 1264/2000.]

Even though they'd wiped out over 200 ghouls, not all of them had been killed by Su Xiao, so he only received a portion of the contribution points. Still, he was getting closer to completing his main storyline task. An idea began forming in his mind—if it worked, he could earn a lot more free time.

"Akira, report the casualties."

True to her strong-willed nature, Mado Akira hadn't taken leave, despite her father's recent death, to participate in today's mission.

"Out of 128 investigators, 78 were lightly injured, 15 were severely injured, and 23 were killed. The remaining 12 sustained only minor injuries."

She too had suffered a light injury but stayed composed as she reported.

Su Xiao wasn't surprised by the casualty count. Driving out ghouls was never an easy task—it required lives. Only losing 23 investigators was a resounding success.

If Su Xiao hadn't led the charge, the death toll would have likely been much higher, possibly even exceeding half.

"Consolidate the team. Send the dead to headquarters and the injured to the hospital. How many men can still fight?"

Su Xiao was already preparing to clear out the next ghoul stronghold. Time was running short.

"About fifty or so can continue to fight."

"Give me the exact number."

In the midst of all this killing and fighting, Su Xiao had developed a unique kind of presence.

"Fifty-three."

Akira instinctively stood straighter.

"Fifty-three... not enough. Contact Special-Class Investigator Shinohara and tell him we need more men."

Shinohara had previously discussed the 14th Ward purge with Su Xiao, and he had stated that he could accept up to 100 casualties. If the number exceeded that, Shinohara would be forced to halt the operation.

To wipe out a large number of ghouls, there would inevitably be deaths. There was no such thing as a bloodless battle. Su Xiao wasn't naive, and neither was Shinohara. Both of them understood this clearly.

Those who kill must be prepared to be killed.
