Chapter 11: The battle against the leader

When it seemed like they were having the upper hand, two of the Arcanine suddenly broke away from their opponents and turned the tide.

They ran toward the third Arcanine and performed a move Kay recognized instantly.

Energy transferred from the two Arcanines into the third one, and its body glowed with energy. With frightening speed, it lunged forward and used Crunch on a Krabby it was facing.

The devastating attack hit Krabby directly, and the Pokemon died instantly. Kay and the team froze after seeing this scene.

It was the first time Kay had ever seen a teammate's Pokemon die in battle. The sight of Krabby's lifeless body sent a chill down his spine despite the heat around him.

Suddenly, the team leader's voice broke through the silence, sharp and commanding.

"Hey! Stay focused! The battle isn't over yet!"

The shout snapped everyone back to reality. Kay gritted his teeth, pushing aside his shock, and he quickly commanded Eevee to use Helping Hand on a Poliwhirl.

Fueled by Eevee's support, Poliwhirl unleashed a powerful Water Jet attack. The high-pressure blast of water struck the three Arcanine, sending them reeling backward.

The opening was enough for the other trainers to launch their final attacks. With a combined effort, they defeated the three Pokemons.

The team let out a sigh of relief, but it was short-lived. Their Pokemons were battered, bruised, and barely standing.

They had used up all their potions in this battle, and the final challenge still awaited them; the battle with the dungeon leader.

The intense battle with the three Arcanines had finally ended, but the real nightmare was only beginning.

From the smoke and flickering flames stepped forward the dungeon leader; a massive Arcanine with intimidating glances. Its eyes glowed with a fierce light, and its presence alone made the air feel heavier.

Kay's hands trembled slightly as he raised his Pokedex to scan the creature. The screen displayed its stats:

Arcanine

Potential: Purple

Stage: Silver

Kay's heart sank. The strongest Pokemon in their team were only at the Bronze Stage.

The gap between Bronze and Silver was like the difference between a small campfire and an igniting fire.

The gap became bigger the higher the stages, this gap represented massive differences in raw power, durability, and skill.

The five trainers and Kay stood side by side, their Pokemons ready to fight. Every single one of them knew this battle would determine whether they would live or die.

The fiery presence of the Arcanine leader made it look almost invincible under the dark volcanic sky.

The battle began. Kay remained at the back, sticking to his role as a supporter.

The Arcanine leader roared and charged forward, flames bursting from its paws with every step.

Five water-type Pokemons Poliwhirl, Golduck, Staryu, and Psyduck surrounded it, launching water-type attacks from all directions.

But despite being surrounded and attacked continuously, the Arcanine seemed barely damaged.

Moments later, in a moment of distraction, Arcanine lunged at Psyduck. With a single thunder fang, it crushed the water-type Pokemon and tossed its lifeless body aside.

Kay froze in place as he watched another one of his teammates fall along with his Pokemon.

The presence of the leader Arcanine increased the temperature of the environment and the smoke in the air.

As the Pokemon died their trainers dropped to their knees trying to take a breath.

The dungeon's harsh heat and smoke affected them immediately. The bond between the Pokemon and the trainer increased the trainers' strength, helping them endure the extreme environments of dungeons.

But when their Pokemon died, that protection vanished, leaving the trainers weak and vulnerable.

Only three Pokemons are left now: Golduck, Poliwhirl, and Staryu. All three were Bronze Stage.

Eevee stood behind them, still casting Helping Hand, boosting their strength as much as possible.

The team leader's Golduck stepped up, firing a rapid series of Water Pulse attacks at Arcanine. Each pulse hit its mark, leaving some damage on the Arcanine.

It seemed that this Golduck was on the verge of breaking through to the Silver Stage, as his attacks were the most effective among all the other Pokemons on the Arcanine.

Poliwhirl and Staryu moved in closer, trying to hit with physical attacks with the support of Eevee.

The combined attacks were starting to show some signs of damage to Arcanine's body, but it wasn't enough.

The air grew even hotter, and Kay felt sweat dripping down his face. After the Arcanine leader sensed the danger, it growled lowly and its body began crackling with electric energy.

After Kay remarked on this behavior, he shouted at the team. "Tell your Pokemon to dodge, it's going to use Wild Charge!".

The Arcanine roared, electricity bursting out from its body as it dashed forward in a blinding arc of light.

Golduck and Poliwhirl managed to jump aside at the last second, narrowly avoiding the attack.

But Staryu wasn't as lucky. The electric attack struck it directly, and the star-shaped Pokemon was flung backward, landing hard on a volcanic rock.

Kay could tell immediately that it wasn't moving. The light in the gem at the center of Staryu's body had faded completely; it was dead.

The trainer who owned Staryu fell to the ground, gasping for breath, clutching his chest.

Kay was sure that in just a few moments this trainer would face the same fate as the other members who were now just cold corpses after moments from the death of their Pokemon.

After using Wild Charge, Arcanine staggered slightly, its body crackling with leftover sparks from the recoil damage.

For the first time, Kay noticed visible damage marks and fatigue on the majestic beast.

The team leader's Golduck continued to follow the same tactic and attack with Water Pulse without stopping.

The Arcanine's movements became slightly unsteady, its fiery eyes blinking more often. Kay realized that Golduck's Water Pulse had finally managed to confuse the Arcanine.

As Arcanine was one stage higher than the Golduck, he needed a long time to become confused.

Its mental strength and resistance were much higher, making it harder to affect with status conditions from lower-stage Pokemons.

The Arcanine growled deeply, shaking its head in frustration as if trying to shake off the attack's disorienting effects. Then, without warning, its entire body began to glow with intense heat.

A massive wave of heat erupted from the Arcanine, spreading outward in all directions.

The wave wasn't just aimed at the Pokemons; it was large enough to hit the trainers too. Kay's mind went blank as he realized there was nowhere to run.

The wave of heat hit them with overwhelming force. Kay closed his eyes and braced himself for the pain, fully expecting this to be the end. But instead of feeling the heat, he felt… nothing.

When he opened his eyes, he was shocked to see the team leader standing in front of him and the other trainer.

His back was facing the Heat Wave, and his arms were outstretched like a shield.

After the attack finished Kay asked worriedly," Leader… are you okay?".

The leader turned around slowly, and Kay was stunned by what he saw. The leader's clothes were burned, but he seemed unharmed by the attack. Underneath the torn fabric, Kay noticed a faint metallic glimmer.

"A shield…" Kay muttered in disbelief.

He suddenly remembered something he had read in a league-issued guidebook. The league had developed special protective shields that trainers could wear.

These shields were powered by the Power Stone of the trainer's Pokemon. When active, they could absorb damage from attacks.

But these shields were incredibly expensive, far beyond what an ordinary trainer could afford. They were usually reserved for elite trainers or league officials.

Kay couldn't believe he was seeing one in action. The leader adjusted his burnt clothes and smirked slightly. "Don't worry. While my Pokemon is still alive, this shield will protect me from most standard attacks."

While they were talking, Arcanine was preparing for another attack. But as the leader remarked, he shouted, "Everyone, focus! This is our chance. While it's still confused, Forget the defense and just focus on the attack!"

Kay then looked with a confused expression toward the leader and asked "..."
