Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Advancing to the Next Stage!
The moment the command sounded, Lian instinctively surged forward. This was no ordinary match; every Pokemon here was faster than his Ninjask. Any delay could mean falling behind irretrievably.
As he charged, Lian prepared to unleash Dragon Breath immediately. He wanted to test if the chance of its additional effect had increased; any improvement would be advantageous.
Dragon Breath inherently has a 30% chance to induce paralysis. If this probability doubled to 60%, it would be significantly impactful. Even without doubling, reaching just 50% would still be remarkably potent.
Upon starting the race, the Ninjask flapped its wings and soared into the air, generating subtle vibrations with remarkable speed.
Wasting no time, Lian swiftly cast Dragon Breath at the ascending Ninjask. This was the closest proximity they'd have; once the Ninjask gained altitude, there wouldn't be another opportunity for such a move.
Just as Lian released Dragon Breath, one of the Swallows also initiated an attack on the Ninjask, clearly recognizing it as the greatest threat.
Once Swellow took flight, its wings suddenly sliced through the air, creating an invisible Air Slash blade. Visible only by the disturbance it caused, the Air Slash swiftly targeted the Ninjask.
This move was unmistakably the flying-type special attack, Air Slash. Most moves Swellow naturally learns are close combat-oriented; mastering Air Slash is rare for them, as they aren't particularly strong in special attacks.
However, given the inability to catch up with the Ninjask, Air Slash seemed the most effective option to strike at distance.
Simultaneously, Lian unleashed Dragon Breath, exhaling a fierce gust infused with intense Dragon-type energy directly towards the still ascending Ninjask.
Commentator Tina couldn't miss this moment and quickly focused the camera on the Ninjask, her voice filled with excitement: "Both Charmeleon and Swellow have launched attacks against the Ninjask! Swellow used Air Slash, while Charmeleon employed Dragon Breath. Will the Ninjask be able to evade these two moves?"
As Tina narrated, the Air Slash, resembling a sharp, invisible blade, rapidly approached the Ninjask.
At this critical moment, Ninjask seemingly sensed the impending danger. With its swift flying body, it abruptly shifted course, narrowly avoiding both Air Slash and Dragon Breath.
Given Ninjask's inherently small size and agility, missing with Air Slash was not surprising.
Lian felt slightly disappointed as Swellow's Air Slash missed. Now, all he could hope for was his Charmeleon's Dragon Breath to land a hit. Generally, there was a good chance of success since Dragon Breath is a breath-based move, making it difficult to dodge.
Just after evading Air Slash, Lian's Dragon Breath reached Ninjask. The intense gust disrupted Ninjask's flight, creating a struggle between its flapping wings and the powerful blast.
The fierce wind overwhelmed Ninjask, causing it to lose control of its flight. Its wings barely managed to fold inward as it focused all efforts on resisting the Dragon Breath.
It connected!
Lian's heart surged with excitement. Although Dragon Breath alone wouldn't significantly impair Ninjask's combat ability, what mattered most was whether reaching the move's limit would enhance any additional effects.
This was their only chance; one Swellow had already missed with its Air Slash, and the second Swellow clearly lacked long-range moves, focusing solely on flight.
If Lian's Dragon Breath did not affect the Ninjask's speed this time, there would be no second chance.
"Unfortunately, Swellow's Air Slash missed Ninjask, but Charmeleon's Dragon Breath hit successfully. However, at first glance, it doesn't seem to have caused significant..." Tina paused mid-commentary, her expression revealing surprise.
After being struck by Dragon Breath, although injured, the Ninjask appeared relatively unharmed and quickly regained its balance, ready to continue flying.
But suddenly, the Ninjask froze, its thin wings becoming momentarily immobile. When it managed to flap them again, only after a short distance, the Ninjask felt its movements stiffen once more, unable to fly normally.
"Ninjask seems to have entered a Paralysis state, which is incredibly detrimental at this moment. Clearly, this was caused by Charmeleon's Dragon Breath move," Tina exclaimed, astonished.
The unexpected onset of paralysis on the Ninjask caught everyone off guard. Even during intense battles, if Dragon Breath induced Paralysis once out of ten attempts, it was considered quite effective.
Inducing Paralysis on the first attempt was akin to winning the lottery; it seemed even fate didn't favor Ninjask's qualification for the finals.
With Ninjask paralyzed, its speed significantly decreased, quickly falling behind. Unless it could regain momentum during its initial boost phase...
However, with its reduced velocity, the two Swallows were now able to catch up easily. They unleashed Wing Attacks simultaneously, defeating Ninjask before it had a chance to accelerate.
The Ninjask Trainer fumed, feeling incredibly unlucky that his Pokemon entered paralysis at such a critical moment. As soon as he saw Ninjask lose combat effectiveness, he knew its chances of reaching the finals were dashed.
"Unfortunately, Ninjask has lost its combat capability. While regrettable, these are the rules. Despite being consistently the fastest participating Pokemon, Ninjask seems to have run out of luck," Tina commented sympathetically.
Seeing Ninjask defeated, Lian felt relieved. Now, it was just him and the two Swallows competing.
The Dragon Breath move proved pleasantly surprising for Lian. With Dragon Breath at its maximum proficiency, the likelihood of triggering additional effects greatly increased, although the exact probability remained unclear. Nonetheless, it was undoubtedly higher than 50%.
At this moment, the two Swallows were significantly ahead, with Lian struggling to keep up, having lost some time due to executing his move earlier.
Currently, releasing Dragon Breath from this distance was barely manageable; it would be ideal if he could get closer. The Swallows maintained a considerable flying height.
If Dragon Breath triggered its additional effect again, Lian's chances of advancing to the finals would greatly increase.
After sprinting at full speed for a while, Lian realized that waiting any longer would only widen the gap. Just as he prepared to unleash another Dragon Breath, the two Swallows suddenly engaged in combat mid-air.
Lian immediately halted his attack. Their confrontation worked to his advantage; ideally, he could benefit like a fisherman reaping rewards without much effort—a perfect scenario.
Once only Frogadier remained, although being a Water-type Pokemon posed some threat to Lian, his superior speed made all the difference. Currently, Frogadier trailed far behind, hardly posing any significant challenge.
As the Swallows continued their flight, they exchanged moves, both relying on their signature Wing Attacks, repeatedly colliding with each other.
This presented Lian with an opportunity to overtake them. Initially, he couldn't catch up, especially considering their high-flying altitude, which made accurately hitting them with Dragon Breath challenging.
As time passed, the two Swallows finally determined a winner. The victorious Swellow was the one that had learned Air Slash and also possessed greater speed.
Meanwhile, Lian had overtaken both Swallows, leading at the front, but not by a significant margin. Soon, the winning Swellow swiftly caught up to him.
The Swellow appeared unwilling to engage with Lian, considering its recent injuries. Its goal was now to focus on flying full throttle and reaching the finish line as quickly as possible.
With the two fastest Pokemon already out of commission, this remaining Swellow became the quickest among them.
Don't want to fight me? Think again.
However, how could Lian let the Swellow comfortably surpass him? Currently in the lead, he knew he had to obstruct the Swellow's advance.
Just as the Swellow flew close enough to overtake him, Lian seized the opportunity. With a powerful leap, he swiftly unleashed Hidden Power (Ice), sending a blue-white burst of awakened energy straight towards the Swellow.
This was his decisive moment; if he could hit the Swellow, victory would be virtually assured. Given the Swellow's existing injuries, the potency of Hidden Power (Ice) would likely render it incapable of further combat.
This move would likely raise suspicions with Kalia, but Lian couldn't worry about that now. Hidden Power (Ice) was more reliable; if Dragon Breath failed to induce Paralysis, given Swellow's speed, there would be little chance for a comeback.
The blue-white aura of Hidden Power (Ice) rapidly approached Swellow. Sensing imminent danger, the fully airborne Swellow immediately detected the ice energy within and felt threatened.
However, Lian had anticipated this reaction. Unless Swellow could abruptly halt, which wasn't feasible at full flight speed, it wouldn't have time to react effectively.
As the ice-infused aura struck Swellow continuously, causing damage, its body quickly covered in frost, leading it to plummet towards the ground.
"That's not Hidden Power (Rock)?" Kalia, watching on the big screen, was taken aback. The power released by Charmeleon clearly wasn't a Rock-type Hidden Power; the color alone differed significantly. Hidden Power (Rock) has a light brown hue, while blue-white signifies either Hidden Power (Water) or Hidden Power (Ice).
However, Kalia distinctly remembered Charmeleon had learned Hidden Power (Rock).
Announcer Tina, riding her Staraptor, swiftly caught the falling Swellow. They then descended to the ground, placing Swellow on the field for medical staff to attend to its injuries.
"I'm sure everyone is as surprised as I am. Yes, Charmeleon defeated Swellow and now holds the title of the fastest Pokemon here. Just moments ago, Charmeleon unleashed an Ice-Type Hidden Power," Tina exclaimed with excitement.
"This Charmeleon is undoubtedly the biggest dark horse in this Extreme Speed Conference. Unless there's an unexpected turn, it will advance to the finals."
As time passed, Lian could already see the finish line, leaving Frogadier far behind, out of sight.
His mood suddenly lifted, knowing only the final round remained ahead.
