The next day.

As soon as Lian opened his eyes, he sat up, recalling yesterday's actions within the System space. He was eager to test if any changes had occurred.

While Kalia was still asleep, Lian jumped out of bed and walked over to the small training area in the room. Facing the floor, he unleashed Dragon Breath.

A fierce blast erupted, continuously striking the ground. Remarkably, the energy seemed absorbed by the floor without causing damage or producing significant noise.

After finishing the release, Lian didn't feel any noticeable difference, except for a reduced cooldown time between uses.

"No way, it can't be that simple."

Lian shook his head. While reducing the cooldown interval for Dragon Breath was expected, he felt there must be more to it than just this. Perhaps releasing it arbitrarily like this couldn't reveal the true change; he needed to test it in actual combat.

He glanced at Kalia, who was still asleep. Grovyle now preferred staying inside its Poké Ball due to its increased size, making it more convenient.

Lian then attempted to unleash Ice-Type Hidden Power. A blue aura condensed and struck the floor, leaving visible traces of frost on the surface.

"Wait!"

A sudden realization struck Lian as he walked over to the floor and touched the frost, feeling its bone-chilling coldness.

If his memory served him correctly, Hidden Power (Ice) should not have any additional effects; it merely releases ordinary ice-type energy. However, the icy frost produced by the recent use of Hidden Power (Ice) persisted for quite some time without dissipating into the ground, indicating that it was clearly not just simple ice-type energy.

Lian suspected that when Hidden Power (Ice) reaches its maximum potential and hits an opponent, it might induce a freezing effect. This could be one of the transformations occurring once a move achieves its peak mastery.

Many moves have secondary effects, such as Fire Fang and Ember, which have a chance to inflict a Burn status on the target. Although the probability is not high, these effects can sometimes dramatically alter the course of battle.

If Hidden Power (Ice) gained a secondary freezing effect, even if the likelihood is low, hitting an opponent could potentially slow them down or even immobilize them with a frozen state.

First, I need more sleep.

After pondering, Lian decided to test his theory during actual combat later. It wasn't yet dawn, so he returned to bed for some extra rest.

The second round of the Extreme Speed Conference was nearing its conclusion; eight out of ten matchups had already been completed, with today featuring the ninth and tenth groups.

Naturally, Grovyle got eliminated. Lian watched that race, where Swellow immediately surpassed all other Pokemon from the start, leaving them unable to catch up or even disrupt it.

Only Grovyle managed to somewhat keep pace at the rear, but the distance between them continuously widened until it became just a distant black silhouette in the sky.

Comparing Grovyle's speed ability value, this Swellow seemed slightly faster than Lian's, albeit not significantly so.

In this year's Extreme Speed Conference, there were not just one but three Swallows participating. Taillows are relatively easy to capture, and evolving them into Swallows isn't difficult either. Any beginner Trainer determined to catch a Taillow would eventually succeed in evolving it into a Swallow.

Although Swallows have modest base stats and represent their final evolution form, their exceptional speed still allows them to hold their own in Pokemon battles.

Currently, a total of eight Pokemon, including Lian's, have advanced. Among them, two Swallows made it through, while the third did not qualify. Additionally, a Ninjask has also progressed, boasting an extraordinary speed that secured its spot effortlessly.

There was only one Ninjask, as Nincada lacked impressive moves prior to evolution, relying mainly on Scratch attacks in battles. Without learning new moves through Move Disks, it had to evolve into Ninjask to truly showcase its strength.

However, being weak before evolution made combat challenging for Nincada, resulting in slow growth. To accelerate its development quickly required substantial resources.

In comparison, Taillow was significantly stronger even before evolving. It possessed preemptive moves like Quick Attack, could learn Wing Attack and Double Team, and most importantly, Taillow's Stalwart Nature allowed it to courageously face opponents regardless of their strength.

This fighting spirit often led many Trainers to prefer capturing Taillow over Nincada, despite Ninjask being more likely to win Extreme Speed Conferences.

Apart from Swellow and Taillow, successfully advancing were Frogadier, Emolga, and Skiploom.

Among them, Skiploom also secured its spot by leveraging its Ability. With a base speed stat of 80, Skiploom benefited from Chlorophyll, which doubled its speed during sunny weather conditions, surpassing other Pokémon.

Apart from Swellow and Ninjask, Lian was particularly concerned about Skiploom's performance. With its Chlorophyll Ability doubling its speed, once activated, Skiploom could effortlessly outpace even Swellow. Even Ninjask might struggle to match Skiploom's speed before triggering its own acceleration Ability.

However, Skiploom had one drawback: it needed to spin the petals on its head while utilizing wind assistance to fly higher and faster.

Time passed swiftly, and the morning races soon commenced. In Group Nine, a Raichu advanced, while in Group Ten, another Swellow secured its spot in the next round.

A total of ten Pokemon qualified for the third round, scheduled for the afternoon. Similar to previous rounds, they would be divided into groups, with five Pokemon competing based on their speed. The top two from each group would then proceed to the final showdown.

Lian felt the pressure mounting but knew he had no choice but to give it his all. He wasn't overly worried about Emolga or Frogadier, but Swellow, Ninjask, Skiploom, and Raichu posed significant challenges.

Raichu possessed the Static Ability, and many of its moves could induce Paralysis on opposing Pokemon, with a speed base stat as high as 110.

Fortunately, Lian had leveled up yesterday; otherwise, he wouldn't have stood a chance against Raichu. Now, it's hard to say, but he believes he should be faster.

At the Blue Grasslands.

After lunch, Lian accompanied Julian to the competition area for the third round draw, determining the group assignments.

"Charmeleon, you gotta give your all! Our chances at winning the prize depend on you," Julian muttered nervously while preparing to draw lots.

Since Lian advanced to the second round, Julian felt renewed hope. Winning the prize would yield a substantial sum of twenty thousand Alliance Coins, not a small amount by any means.

Julian randomly picked a paper ball, unfolded it, and found out they were assigned to Group One.

"What terrible luck." Julian grimaced.

"I can't believe we ended up in Group One," Kalia echoed, feeling equally unlucky. Had they been in Group Two, there might have been a better chance, but Group One seemed daunting.

Lian glanced at the large screen, and his expression changed abruptly—the worst-case scenario materialized. In Group One, there was a Ninjask alongside two Swallows and a seemingly inconsequential Frogadier.

Lian realized that securing a spot in the finals would be exceptionally challenging with this lineup, but it wasn't entirely impossible.

The Swallows were likely to target the Ninjask, as their Trainers knew it posed the greatest threat. For them, defeating the Ninjask would significantly increase their chances of winning.

After the drawing concluded and groups were finalized, there was a brief wait before the first match of the third round was set to begin.

Lian approached his team, glancing at the four Pokémon beside him. Although victory seemed unlikely, a confrontation between the Swallows and Ninjask was inevitable; no Trainer would pass up the chance for their Pokémon to reach the finals.

He planned to strike at the Ninjask first. If both Swallows also engaged, they could potentially overwhelm and eliminate the Ninjask outright.

"Hello everyone, I'm Tina, and we're now in the third round of the Extreme Speed Conference. The Pokémon advancing this far are truly exceptional. In Group One, we have Ninjask, Swellow, Charmeleon..."

"This match is sure to be unprecedentedly intense! Ten seconds until it begins; let's eagerly await the action."

As the countdown progressed, Lian grew increasingly focused, contemplating his next moves. Without defeating other Pokemon, he wouldn't stand a chance of qualifying for the finals.

He decided to start with Hidden Power (Ice), even though Kalia would likely notice. However, this move could deal significant damage to Ninjask.

With only one Ninjask present, once it was eliminated, Lian would have more strategic options. Although Swellow had impressive speed, it wasn't yet fast enough to completely outpace him.

Wait!

A sudden realization struck Lian. If reaching the move limit with Hidden Power (Ice) resulted in an additional Freeze effect, what about moves that already have secondary effects?

Dragon Breath, for instance, has a decent chance of causing Paralysis. So, if Dragon Breath reaches its move limit, would the secondary effect also enhance, such as doubling the probability?

"Begin!"

Just as Lian pondered these possibilities, the referee signaled the start of the match.
