Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Adapting to Life at Sea – Returning to the Ship
As Trafalgar D. Luo and his crew made their way toward the port, they were about to turn a corner when, out of nowhere, a person suddenly rushed out in front of them. Instinctively, Law reached out and pushed the person aside. The shadow flew and collided with two others who were following behind.
When they grabbed hold of that person, Law realized who he had nearly collided with.
It was the woman who had left the day before. As he was still processing this, he saw her take a punch to the face and then be thrown to the ground. Law hesitated for a moment before taking a step forward, but he didn't manage to catch her in time. Instead, he watched as she landed at his feet.
A third person cursed loudly and moved forward, one of his arms bleeding profusely. The wound appeared to have been caused by something akin to a bite. Law looked down and noticed blood on Jialai's mouth.
Without waiting for Law's signal, Jebaru stepped forward and kicked the thugs away.
How dare they ignore the Heart Pirates! Unforgivable!
Turning his attention back, he saw the woman standing up with the help of Bepo. Judging by the way she hunched over, the impact from earlier had likely injured her spine. The punch had also swollen her face to the point where it resembled a pig's head.
When he saw her handing hats to Bepo and Jebaru, Law couldn't help but think that her taste in accessories was terribly poor. Bepo's hat was passable, but on Jebaru, it made him look like a clown.
And yet, both of them endured wearing those hats. Law's smile deepened slightly as his gaze shifted to the one remaining hat in Jialai's hands.
When Jialai mentioned that the hat was for herself, Law's smile faded a little. He continued walking toward the port, as departure time was approaching.
Once back on the ship, Law saw Jebaru carrying Jialai.
It was surprising to see the normally rough Jebaru showing such consideration for her. Leaning against the side of the ship, Law's lips habitually curled into a slight smile. Seeing this, Jebaru walked up to him, still carrying her, and spoke.
"Captain, Jialai's injuries are quite severe," he said, implying that Law should take a look at her.
"We're about to set sail," Law replied, casually glancing at the person Jebaru had put down.
"Captain…" Bepo stepped forward with a slightly pleading tone. It seemed that Jialai's attempt to act cute had worked on Bepo.
Jialai knew that Law still didn't want to take her in, and she didn't want to shamelessly cling on. However, if her wounds weren't treated soon, they might cause long-term problems. With her head lowered, she said, "Bepo, just find someone to treat my wounds. Once it's done, I'll leave." After all, most of the crew on board were skilled in medicine.
"Captain," Bepo ignored Jialai's words, still looking at Law with persistent hope. Law remained silent for a moment before turning and walking toward the ship's cabin. Halfway there, he casually called out, "Bring her over, prepare."
Bepo beamed with joy and gestured for Jialai to follow. Jebaru turned and went off to prepare with the rest of the crew.
Entering the room for the second time, Jialai instinctively sized up her surroundings. Law stood by a table and glanced at Bepo.
"Close the door," he instructed.
Bepo obediently shut the door, leaving the two of them in the space.
"Come here." His tone was habitual and commanding. Jialai noticed the seriousness in his expression, and as she moved closer, she tried to straighten her back but was halted by a sharp pain.
Feeling guilty, Jialai quickly sat in a chair, her swollen face directly facing Law. Inside, she couldn't help but feel tears welling up. Why did she have to be seen in such a pathetic state?
She closed her eyes, trying to compose herself, but his movements were so rough. Did it really need to be so painful just to treat her wounds? She snapped her eyes open, gazing at him with tear-filled eyes, her puffy face looking utterly pitiable—there was no beauty in it at all.
Law finished applying the medicine to her face and placed a large bandage on it. He shot her a look full of mockery, signaling for her to turn around.
Jialai obediently turned her back, feeling him tear open the back of her clothes.
From her shoulder to her back, the skin was torn, with blood seeping through and sticking to the clothes. Law didn't hesitate to rip the clothes apart, causing more blood to seep out from the wound.
Jialai gritted her teeth, unwilling to make a sound, gripping the corner of her clothes tightly.
After pressing her back a few times, Law confirmed that the injury was superficial and hadn't affected her internal organs.
"The wound on your back is not serious. Just change the dressing regularly in the next few days," Law instructed, then added, "Don't overexert yourself until it heals."
"Mm." Jialai lowered her head in acknowledgment, her lips twitching upward slightly.
Once the wound on her back was treated, Law used his powers to summon a large, thick coat and tossed it to Jialai without saying a word before turning and walking away.
Since boarding the ship, Jialai had been wearing clothes that Bepo had given her, which she had altered herself. After all, she wasn't from the North Sea and wasn't used to those thick, enveloping clothes. She didn't want to stand out too much, so she made some compromises—long sleeves became short sleeves, and long pants became shorts. However, this coat was clearly not one of the altered clothes.
It was Law's coat. Jialai felt her heart race uncontrollably, and as she sensed that Law had left, she secretly buried her head in the fabric. The clean smell of freshly washed clothes, faintly scented with sunshine, made her lose herself in the sensation.
After a long time, she finally put the coat on. The long coat covered her hips. Jialai returned to her room, took the coat off, carefully folded it, and placed it under her pillow. Then, she pulled out a piece of altered clothing from her chest and put it on, a smile spreading uncontrollably across her face.
Jialai's injuries slowly began to heal, and she had been asking Law to change her bandages regularly. Although they didn't talk much, Jialai felt content.
Then one day, while changing her bandages, Jialai saw an old newspaper on Law's desk. Her face immediately grew serious.
Finding an excuse, she borrowed the paper from Law. Flipping to the page she had seen earlier, she saw a large photo of Fire Fist Ace with a block of text beside it, stating the time of his execution.
