Chapter 52: Chapter 52: Just a Little Stronger
Sorting out the mess took Jack far longer than he had anticipated. The hatred between the three nations ran deep—so deep, in fact, that Jack had to destroy two cities and countless smaller towns just to instill enough fear to quell any further resistance.
Even then, it took the fearsome reputation of the Beasts Pirates and Jack's overwhelming strength to suppress dissent on behalf of Hedarn. This alone consumed over half a year. Adding to the delay was Jack's discovery of rich mineral veins across the continent, which temporarily shelved his plans to set sail again.
The discovery came during his rampage through several towns. After a preliminary survey by Hedarn's team, it was confirmed: the veins contained an abundant supply of minerals—far more than Jack had initially imagined. For the rapidly expanding Beasts Pirates, this was a stroke of incredible fortune. The minerals could be used to forge weapons or sold for a steady stream of revenue. And it wasn't just iron, there were other valuable ores as well.
With Kaido and Kurozumi Orochi enforcing a strict isolationist policy in Wano, Jack had no choice but to rely on Den Den Mushi to contact Black Maria. When bored, Jack often called her to pass the time and deepen their bond. Their conversations frequently lasted the entire night. Thankfully, Onigashima didn't block Den Den Mushi signals, giving Jack some solace when dealing with troublesome "dogs" like Rim and the others.
"Hey, babe! Miss me?" Jack said with his usual cocky grin.
"Jack, my sword sheath misses you terribly," came the reply.
Jack's smug expression faltered as he sighed in exasperation.
"Big Brother King, don't you have anything better to do? Can you just hand the Den Den Mushi to Maria, please?"
"Shut up, Jack. You're hopeless!" King barked, cutting him off.
"And you two over there—stop slacking off!" King scolded Yamato and Black Maria, who had been sneaking glances in Jack's direction. Taking the Den Den Mushi aside, he continued in a commanding tone, "Jack, is your mission complete? Quit hogging the Den Den Mushi all day—you're interfering with their training!"
"If this keeps up, I might have to install signal-jamming Den Den Mushi here on Onigashima!"
Jack panicked. "Wait, King! Don't be so cruel! Have you ever been in love? Do you know how crazy love-struck couples can get? We can't meet in person, and now we can't even talk? That's way too harsh!"
"Besides, Maria and I go way back. Childhood friends, you know? You can't just tear us apart like this!"
"You—"
"Shut up, Jack! Do you actually have something important to say or not? Speak now!" King's patience was wearing thin.
Jack chuckled nervously, knowing full well that if he were standing before King right now, he'd probably get clobbered. Not yet strong enough to take him on, Jack decided to get to the point.
"King, the situation is settled, but I've stumbled across something big—some major mineral veins."
"Mineral veins? Are you sure, Jack?" King's tone shifted, now laced with interest.
"Absolutely! I had them surveyed, and they're rich enough to last us decades without running out."
"Excellent, Jack!" King exclaimed. After a brief pause to compose himself, he added, "I'll request additional manpower from Kaido-sama and send some officers to oversee things. I'll come personally as well. Until then, stay put and guard the site!"
"Got it! Oh, by the way, can you—"
Click.
Staring at the now-closed Den Den Mushi, Jack muttered under his breath before shoving it into his pocket.
"What a guy… Whatever, back to work."
Thanks to Master's intelligence network, Jack had been dealing with a group of elite fighters. Though not as strong as Raul, they were formidable enough to warrant generous rewards for their capture. Their tenacity amazed Jack, they'd rather die than surrender. He treated them well, providing food, rest, and even medical care. Yet for every one he healed, he executed another. Nine were dead so far.
As for the rewards, aside from a few minor stat boosts, all he'd gotten were flashy trinkets like gold chains and pocket watches. Only one remained—Number Ten. This one was the strongest of the lot, rivaling even Lauren. Jack found himself eager for the challenge.
In the ship's hold, Holdem limped over, his arm in a sling and his movements awkward. Master's Purification Fruit wasn't as effective on injuries as it was on diseases, merely accelerating recovery. Holdem still bore the wounds from his ill-fated encounter with Number Ten. If not for Rim's timely intervention, Holdem would have been dead.
"Jack-sama! Is it time?" Holdem asked, his face alight with anticipation. He couldn't wait to see the one who had humiliated him meet their end.
Jack nodded. The moment Number Ten's shackles were removed, they attacked without hesitation. Unlike last time, they were rested and prepared, convinced they could defeat Jack.
But reality was harsh. This time, Jack defeated them even faster than before.
As he wiped the blood from his spiked club with the remains of Number Ten's cloak, Rim, who had been observing from the sidelines, tilted his head and asked, "Jack-sama, have you gotten stronger? Your aura feels different—more powerful."
Jack smirked, flexing his fist as he checked his stats. With his agility now at 84 and three attributes reaching SR, his character card now displayed SSR.
"Just a little stronger," he said lightly. Then, with a mischievous glint in his eye, he added, "And Rim, stop using Observation Haki to check me out. My preferences are perfectly normal!"
