Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Jon Takes Action

Since the four had not yet met Doflamingo, they were still looking for someone worthy of their allegiance. Joining Coleman's pirate crew was simply a way to test whether Coleman had what it took to lead them.

After spending some time with Coleman, they quickly realized that he wasn't the one they were searching for. He lacked the qualities of a king. However, because their own strength hadn't reached its peak, they didn't dare to leave the crew so easily.

Although they were still young, they had been pirates for some time and had developed all the traits of seasoned criminals—cruelty, violence, and a complete disregard for morality.

These four weren't content with being ordinary pirates. After meeting one another, they banded together and swore to seek out a true king to follow.

At that moment, as Coleman faced an overwhelming enemy, their first thought wasn't to fight alongside him but to flee the battlefield and abandon the crew.

"We can't fight the Navy head-on. The moment we find an opportunity, we retreat."

"Agreed."

The four quickly came to a consensus: the moment they saw a chance, they would escape.

After absorbing the life energy of the surrounding plants, Jon's stamina recovered rapidly, and he soon opened his eyes.

"Major Matt, the remaining pirates have escaped from the forest I created."

Matt immediately issued an order:

"Pursue them! Surround them! Don't let a single one escape!"

At this point, Matt was filled with admiration for Jon and wasted no time in directing his forces to encircle the pirates.

Coleman, still hesitating, suddenly found himself surrounded by the Navy. His expression twisted into a feral snarl as he abandoned his plans to flee and decided to fight to the death.

"Attack!"

Matt gave the command, and the Navy clashed with the pirates in an all-out assault.

Although the pirates were outnumbered and had suffered heavy losses, a few among them—including Coleman and his close subordinates—were still powerful fighters. Several Navy soldiers fell under their blades.

Initially, Matt didn't intervene personally. However, when Coleman killed several soldiers, Matt's fury boiled over, and he charged at the pirate captain himself.

"Pemberton, take your team and assist Major Matt!" Jon instructed.

Though Jon's stamina had mostly recovered, he was still mentally drained and needed more time to fully recuperate.

"Got it. Leave it to me!"

Pemberton led his team into the fray and engaged one of the stronger pirates.

While Pemberton's strength wasn't on Jon's level, he had earned his place in the elite training unit with his talent and combat prowess. His opponent was formidable, but the battle was evenly matched, with neither side gaining the upper hand.

However, the situation was much worse for Matt. Coleman, with a bounty of nearly 90 million berries, was not only ruthless but also exceptionally strong. Matt soon found himself at a disadvantage.

Fortunately, the Navy soldiers coordinated their attacks to support Matt. While they couldn't defeat Coleman, they at least managed to prevent his victory, though the battle reached a stalemate.

"You damned Navy scum! You've slaughtered my crew! Now I have to start over! I'll kill every last one of you!"

At first, Coleman had been wary of the person who had summoned the forest. But after engaging the Navy in combat, he gained confidence. In his mind, the Navy wasn't as strong as they seemed. Fueled by rage, he roared and fought even harder.

In this world, individual strength often made all the difference. One powerful combatant could easily take on hundreds.

While Coleman wasn't considered one of the top-tier pirates, his opponents included only a Navy major. In the grand scheme of the Navy's ranks, a major was merely a mid-level officer—not someone expected to defeat a pirate with an 89-million-berry bounty.

Even so, Matt showed no sign of retreat. He fought with all his might.

The Navy's duty was to eradicate pirates—there could be no retreat when facing them. Backing down would dishonor the uniform and the symbol of justice it represented.

More importantly, Matt knew that if he could hold out a little longer, Jon would have time to recover. And once Jon was back at full strength, Coleman would be finished.

Jon watched the scene closely. Seeing Matt struggling, he decided he couldn't wait any longer. Ignoring the lingering pain in his head, he sprang into action.

"Die!"

Coleman rammed into Matt with all his might, sending the major flying as blood sprayed from his mouth. Seizing the opportunity, Coleman raised his massive sword and prepared to strike the finishing blow.

"No!" Matt's heart sank.

"Bang!"

Suddenly, Coleman froze. Thick vines had appeared and wrapped around his arm, preventing him from swinging his sword.

"Who's there?!" Coleman roared in fury and turned his head, only to see a young Navy officer staring coldly at him from the other end of the vines.

"Ensign Jon!" Matt's eyes lit up with hope when he saw Jon.

"Leave the rest to me, Major Matt."

Jon's voice was icy. Though he still felt slightly dizzy, it no longer hindered him. His gaze was locked onto Coleman, filled with killing intent.

With a powerful tug on the vines, Jon dragged Coleman several steps forward. Coleman dug his heels into the ground and swung his sword, slicing the vines apart.

"You little brat! You think you can fight me? I'll tear you apart!"

Bellowing in rage, Coleman brandished his massive two-meter-long blade and charged at Jon.

"Soru!"

Before Coleman could reach him, Jon vanished and reappeared behind the pirate.

"Rankyaku!"

A vacuum blade sliced through the air toward Coleman, who quickly turned and blocked the attack with his sword. Despite successfully parrying, the force of the strike drove him back several steps.

Jon pressed the offensive, unleashing a barrage of Rankyaku slashes. His relentless assault forced Coleman onto the defensive, making him stumble backward. Though some strikes landed, Coleman's injuries weren't yet severe.

"Shigan Barrage!"

Jon's mastery of the Shigan and Rankyaku techniques shone as he unleashed a flurry of piercing attacks.

Back at the Navy Academy, Jon had specialized in the "Rokushiki" techniques because he knew how powerful and versatile they were. He had chosen to focus on them because they would remain useful for a long time.

Among his classmates, Jon was undoubtedly the most dedicated to mastering the Rokushiki. Even Akainu, known for his relentless pursuit of strength, hadn't studied them as deeply as Jon had.

With Z himself as his instructor—an expert in the Rokushiki—combined with Jon's knowledge from his past life, Jon had developed unique insights into the techniques.

Z had praised Jon on more than one occasion, calling him a genius in the art of the Rokushiki.
