One Piece: My code name is Green Bull

Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Staff Department, Vice Admiral Tsuru

Jon Lyons frowned immediately when he saw his department assignment.

While Akainu and the others were assigned to combat units, he had been placed in the Staff Department.

Although Jon didn't fully understand the relationships between the various departments at Marine Headquarters, he knew one thing: the Staff Department wasn't a combat unit.

He couldn't understand why Zephyr had assigned him there.

Even if he didn't understand, there was no way to question Zephyr about it.

The assignments had been announced and could not be changed.

Jon was frustrated.

He had desperately wanted to join a combat unit, where he'd have the chance to fight on the front lines and use those battles to improve his strength.

What he lacked most was practical combat experience.

But now, being assigned to the Staff Department, it seemed unlikely that his wish would be fulfilled anytime soon.

"Jon, you're lucky. Zephyr-sensei clearly favors you, sending you to the safest department," Peveton said enviously.

Jon was frustrated, but Peveton was full of jealousy.

This slacker had always hoped to stay in Headquarters logistics.

Instead, he'd been assigned to a combat unit, making him immensely envious of Jon.

In the dormitory, Jon and Monkey D. Dragon were packing their belongings.

Everyone had been assigned to their respective departments and needed to report.

New dormitories would be provided, and they wouldn't return here.

"Jon,"

As they were packing, Kizaru appeared again, with Akainu following behind him.

"We're all about to go our separate ways, so I came to say goodbye," Kizaru said.

Jon looked at Kizaru and Akainu, then said slowly,

"Kizaru, Akainu, you two need to be careful. The New World isn't like here—don't let yourselves get killed out there."

Akainu and Kizaru were the standout individuals in their cohort.

Not only did they hold high ranks, but they were also assigned directly under Admiral Sengoku, each serving under a vice admiral.

They were set to head to the New World soon, which was why Jon made this remark.

Kizaru laughed.

"The ones who should worry are those pirates, not us."

Akainu added,

"Jon, Dragon, you two take care as well."

"Jon's right," Monkey D. Dragon said.

"The New World is chaotic, and pirates are everywhere. Be careful, you two."

Dragon, as expected of someone with connections, was assigned directly under Vice Admiral Garp and would remain on standby at Headquarters.

The four of them said their goodbyes, and their little group disbanded.

Jon carried his belongings and headed to the Staff Department to report.

He had spent enough time at Marine Headquarters to know his way around, so after a bit of searching, he found the Staff Department.

As a key department of Marine Headquarters, the Staff Department had its own designated area, located beside the main building.

"So, this is the Staff Department?"

Jon looked at the building, his expression a little odd.

It wasn't that there was anything wrong with the building itself; it was the two guards at the entrance.

They were tall, imposing female Marines, each about three meters in height, completely different from the soldiers he'd seen before.

Having two women standing guard struck Jon as unusual, but he still approached them respectfully.

"Ensign Jon Lyons, reporting as ordered."

"An ensign?"

The two female Marines looked puzzled.

One of them stepped forward, took Jon's documents, and began reviewing them carefully.

"He really is."

After confirming his identity, their expressions turned curious.

They gave Jon a thorough once-over before one of them went inside to report, leaving the other to keep an eye on him.

"Little brother, we haven't had a new recruit join us in ages—especially not a man," the remaining Marine said.

"Little brother?"

Jon shivered.

An ominous feeling crept over him, and he grew even more frustrated.

It was bad enough that he wasn't as tall as most men, but now even two random female soldiers were taller than him.

He couldn't stand it!

After a year of training, Jon had grown significantly and was now about two meters tall.

But in this world of pirates, where the average height was three meters, it still wasn't enough.

At a loss for words, Jon chose to remain silent, standing stiffly with a serious expression.

A few minutes later, the first Marine returned and said,

"Ensign Jon Lyons, come with me."

Jon obediently followed her.

They soon arrived at an office, where the Marine instructed him to knock and enter on his own before leaving.

Jon, unsure of what to expect, gently knocked on the door.

"Come in,"

A woman's voice called from inside.

Jon opened the door and stepped in.

The office was spacious and contained two people:

One was seated in a chair, the other stood nearby.

Jon didn't recognize either of them.

Nonetheless, he saluted and said loudly,

"Ensign Jon Lyons, reporting as ordered."

The woman in the chair looked up.

She was a dignified, middle-aged woman wearing a Marine vice admiral's uniform, exuding an air of authority.

Standing beside her was a tall, beautiful teenage girl.

"Jon Lyons,"

Vice Admiral Tsuru began speaking in a serious tone,

"Son of Walston Lyons, base commander of South Sea Branch 47.

Born with strong Observation Haki.

A user of a plant-based Devil Fruit, capable of controlling and destroying vegetation.

One of Zephyr's first students.

Outstanding, reserved, with a calm mind and some leadership ability."

Jon listened quietly.

He had already displayed these traits, so it wasn't surprising that this information had been collected.

"Disappointed that you weren't assigned to a combat unit?" Tsuru asked.

Jon replied, "Not really."

"Good. It's best if you have no other thoughts."

Tsuru nodded.

"My name is Tsuru. From today forward, I will be your direct superior.

Although you've joined the Staff Department, as a newcomer, you won't have many responsibilities for now.

Your primary tasks will be to continue learning and training."

Jon's face fell.

He had already spent a year learning and training.

Now that he was finally assigned to an official unit, he still had to do more of the same?

"Don't be discouraged," Tsuru said.

"Even though you've graduated, you're still too inexperienced to fight pirates.

The Staff Department isn't a combat unit.

Our job is to devise battle plans, oversee logistics, and coordinate operations for front-line forces."

"Other officers in the department have their own tasks.

You will be assigned directly to my team.

Starting tomorrow, all your learning and training will be conducted with my unit. Any questions?"

"Yes," Jon said.

"Vice Admiral Tsuru, where will I be staying?"

Tsuru replied,

"The Staff Department has accommodations, and yours has already been arranged.

Gion will show you the way."

The girl standing nearby said,

"Follow me."

She opened the door and stepped out.

Jon followed without hesitation, leaving the office.

As she watched him go, Tsuru couldn't help but shake her head and sigh.

"That Zephyr… he really handed this kid over to me."

The new recruit assignments had nothing to do with her initially.

But Zephyr had insisted on assigning Jon to her.

He said Jon was too young and full of potential, requiring more refinement before being sent into combat.

That might be true, but her unit wasn't like others.

"I hope the kid's mental fortitude is strong enough. Otherwise, he'll be a handful," Tsuru muttered.

The thought of potential chaos brought a rare smile to her face.
