23 - The Entrance Exam
Morning.
Warm sunlight shines on my face. The sound of birds chirping reaches my ears, and the soft feel of the blanket wraps me in comfort.
“Mmnya.”
There was also the option to get up, but I boldly abandoned that choice.
I curled up and pulled the half-lowered blanket up to my chin. My eyes hadn’t been open for a while.
‘And no one to wake me up.’
Unlike the shabby room in the log cabin, this inn room where I’m staying for a fee is truly a place optimized for a good night’s sleep.
“Chirp chirp!”
Except for this bird sound right next to my face.
“Chirp chirp!”
I had heard from adults before. Babies wake up at all hours and make life difficult for their parents.
But who would have known? That this applies to birds, not just mammals. Not to mention, I’m not even this bird’s parent.
“Chirp!”
“I’ve heard that the early bird catches the worm…”
But I’ve never heard that the early bird pecks at its owner’s eyes.
“Alright, I’ll get up.”
The effect of the beak massage was tremendous, and I finally had to get up from bed, rubbing my stinging eyes.
“Tweet, you know what?”
“Chirp?”
As I asked while putting on my clothes, Tweet tilted its head.
Seeing that annoying gesture, mischief rose up and my mouth began to open.
Well, it’s not like it would understand anyway.
“Writers who write novels should never abandon the heroines they’ve created. Why? Because if they do, they’re truly screwed. But…”
“Chirp?”
Despite being just a baby bird, Tweet made an expression as if asking what nonsense this was.
Though my eyebrows twitched at the very impertinent attitude, I ignored it and continued speaking as I handed Tweet a piece of bread.
“A bird like you with no breasts can be abandoned. Why? Because no one expects anything from a bird like you.”
“Chirp!”
Could it actually understand my words? When I spoke nonsense, Tweet screeched as if angry.
How could I lose? I dropped bread crumbs in front of Tweet and kept running my mouth.
“Now, imagine you’re a reader. What do you think you’d prefer? Would you want to mate with a pretty, high-status heroine with plenty to touch, or would you want to mate with a breastless bird?”
“Chirp…”
“Tweet, I may have saved you for humanitarian reasons, but I have no expectations of you. So please…”
Was the bread not to its taste? Tweet, who couldn’t have understood my words, made a sickly sound and plopped down in place.
“Don’t cause trouble and grow up quietly. That’s the only way saving you will have meaning.”
I said this while stroking Tweet’s small head with a satisfied smile as it sat there looking dejected.
“Sigh, why am I talking to someone who can’t understand me…”
Suddenly I felt self-deprecating.
No matter how much this bad bird disturbed my sweet sleep, still.
To be spitting facts at a baby bird that hasn’t even grown up.
“Chirp!”
That appearance must have seemed very ugly even to a baby bird, as Tweet started screeching again.
“Alright. I won’t talk nonsense, just grow up healthy.”
Feeling somewhat sorry, I stroked Tweet’s head with my finger and thought.
The truth is, I do have some expectations for Tweet.
The Tweet chirping in front of me is unmistakably a baby blue bird. But in the game, it wasn’t like that.
It swept through the air with a house-sized body, spewing black magic energy all over the world.
Not just that. It even carried the Seven Deadly Sins on its back, reigning over the sky.
But.
‘This bird is now mine.’
Now it’s different. I rescued Tweet and will raise it myself.
So it will be Kamel and Tweet, not the Seven Deadly Sins and the Monstrosity, who reign over the sky.
Suddenly I feel pumped up. Because I imagined my future self wielding two swords while reigning over the sky.
“Hehe.”
“Chirp…?”
When I smiled with ambition, Tweet tilted its head.
“Here, I’ve prepared plenty, so wait quietly.”
Whether it does or not. I placed plenty of bread crumbs on the desk, then started getting ready to go out.
Because today was the day of the entrance exam.
“Entrance exam…”
I felt strange. Me, a freshman at Arden Academy.
It’s clear that life ahead won’t be all smooth.
Nevertheless, I can’t help feeling excited.
“Whew, I’ll be back.”
After calming my pounding heart with deep breaths, I opened the door and stepped outside.
Arden Academy was absolutely bustling with people.
There were so many carriages stretching endlessly from the main gate and beyond, and various age groups were continuing their own conversations in front of the main gate.
The interior of the academy, where only current students and exam takers could enter, wasn’t much different.
Were there this many applicants? I can see hundreds of young people with various expressions heading towards the exam hall on the vast grounds.
Perhaps because there were so many people, various types of humans were visible.
Those trembling with nervousness.
Those full of confidence.
Those exchanging greetings with close friends.
And even those who have already started gossiping.
“What’s with him? He’s walking here alone.”
“Must be a commoner. Look at that. He’s carrying two swords without any class.”
“Clearly just a show-off.”
“Guys like that need to be trampled to taste good.”
“But he is handsome. I really hope he fails.”
Is it because of my uncommon black hair? Or perhaps because I have a fairly good appearance?
People I’ve never seen before glance at me and speak.
I don’t pay attention. Most of them will fail the exam anyway.
And since compliments like “handsome” were also heard, I didn’t feel too bad.
Eventually, I arrived inside a large auditorium.
“Oh…”
I had to let out an exclamation.
How should I put it? It was a scene reminiscent of a colosseum.
The interior boasted a magnificent size that could accommodate more than a thousand examinees with room to spare.
In the center was a training ground large enough to be called a field, surrounded by seats packed like spectator stands.
And above all.
‘Magic really is convenient…’
What caught my eye was a rectangular hologram floating in the air above the training ground, manifested by magic.
‘Wouldn’t it be better without that?’
I grumbled as I sat in the first empty seat I saw.
Because for me, knowing the purpose of that hologram, it was honestly troublesome.
‘I wonder how everyone will react.’
On the other hand, I was also intrigued.
After all, everyone here can watch the students taking the exam through that hologram.
The entrance exam is conducted with “illusion magic,” and its content is truly interesting.
When an examinee places their hand on the crystal ball placed on the training ground, illusion magic activates.
What’s projected on the hologram is the inner mind of the examinee under the illusion spell.
What the examinee witnesses is the illusion of the being they fear most or consider the strongest.
When the examinee faces a wall they haven’t been able to overcome.
What the examiners want to see is not the outcome of victory or defeat, but the will and skill shown by the examinee.
How much skill they demonstrate.
How much will they possess.
The reason this is made public to all attending is to provide stimulation.
By showing walls that can’t be overcome, they aim to enhance academic enthusiasm.
By showing the illusions of others, they aim to spark competition.
Arden Academy has conducted entrance exams this way for a long time.
“The problem is…”
When my turn comes, the being that will appear before me is predetermined.
Why say it twice? That being is definitely my master. Because I’ve never seen anyone stronger or more frightening than her.
“I can’t just take it easy.”
If I do, I might be defeated by Master instantly and fail the exam.
So I needed to show some effort, if not my best.
“In front of these novices.”
I muttered, looking around at the crowd that had gathered densely.
Despite the large number of people, unfortunately, only a very small number among them possess skills equal to mine.
In such a situation.
If Master appears on that hologram?
If I show myself fighting on par with her?
“They’ll all faint.”
That was the troublesome part. I couldn’t imagine how much those novices would fear me after realizing my level.
As I was thinking this, an unfamiliar voice came from beside me.
“What are you muttering about by yourself? Do you have personality issues?”
Ah, was I too absorbed?
Looking to the side, I saw a boy with light golden hair frowning as he placed his index finger against his lips.
“…”
Feeling embarrassed, I smiled awkwardly and gestured an apology.
‘So he was next to me.’
A memorable face despite being male. I felt momentarily glad, but decided to just keep my mouth shut.
Because.
‘It’s troublesome.’
He was a main character who would inevitably be involved in the main episodes, but not now.
Above all, he was also male.
“We will now begin the entrance exam.”
As I was thinking this, a voice filled with mana began to resound throughout the auditorium.
“The exam is…”
Looking towards the source of the sound, I saw a presenter with a cheerful demeanor giving guidance about the exam to the examinees.
“Whew…”
Was he nervous? The friend who had criticized me from the side exhales.
“Then we will start the exam. When your name is called, please come up here. Now, the first examinee…”
Starting with the first examinee, the exam proceeded quickly.
‘This is interesting.’
Perhaps because everyone has lived different lives, the beings appearing on the hologram were extremely diverse.
From ordinary beings like their fathers or magical beasts encountered in forests, to beings difficult to approach like sword saints, holy men, heroes, emperors, and so on.
Watching each person try to break through walls they couldn’t overcome was more interesting than I thought.
“Rose Van Darmian.”
A familiar name reaches my ears amidst the enjoyment.
Looking down, I saw Rose walking confidently on the training ground, her bright red hair fluttering.
‘I wonder who will appear for her.’
Although I couldn’t ask directly, I was curious inside.
‘Cayden? Jeti? Dunkel?’
Weren’t they all utterly vicious fellows? Among them, if there’s a top one, I’d like to curse them together later.
As I was thinking this.
Rose placed her hand on the crystal ball, and a being I never expected appeared on the hologram.
“…!”
“…!”
Could they sense that being’s strength? The faces of the professors sitting at the judges’ seats were filled with astonishment.
“Eh?”
I too had to tilt my head and rub my eyes.
“Why are you appearing there?”
That being opened her delicate lips as she fluttered her glossy platinum hair that hung down to her waist.
“Child, whether you’re Rose or a weed, didn’t I tell you not to come here?”
It was my master.
