22 - The Monstrosity
Adenia, the island where Arden Academy is situated.
This island, boasting the largest area in the Iselos Empire, is so vast that even graduates haven’t visited many places on it.
What does this mean?
Being the main setting of the game, there are many hidden quests and events scattered throughout.
I’m currently crossing the “Unknown Forest” located in the northwest part of the island to check one of them.
“I’ve arrived.”
As I emerge from the forest, the first thing I see is an endless expanse of emerald sea.
Next is a cliff. How high is it? Looking down from the edge, I see a breathtaking view far below.
“Let’s see, the largest tree is over there…”
At the edge of the forest stands a particularly tall, solitary tree.
I visually draw the shortest straight line from that tree to the edge of the cliff.
“If I look down from here…”
Looking down from the end of that straight line, I see a protruding landform.
If I go down there, there’s a cave which is today’s destination: the “Monstrosity’s Nest.”
The giant raven, the Monstrosity.
This creature didn’t show itself until the middle of the game, but began to appear in the latter half after being tamed by the Chaos Church group.
A house-sized body sweeping through the air,
Area attacks with indescribable power.
These two facts alone made it quite troublesome, but it even appeared carrying the Seven Deadly Sins.
“…It was terrible.”
The Seven Deadly Sins already boasted a grotesquely difficult level, and then this terrible magical beast on top of that.
I had to invest a lot of time and effort to defeat this Monstrosity and the Seven Deadly Sins.
I still remember.
After strategizing for over a month, when I finally defeated them for the first time, the thrilling sensation that ran through my entire body.
And the Monstrosity strategy guide that was posted on the community the next day.
[Finally found how to defeat the Monstrosity bastard]
-It’s simple. Just go here and kill it before the late game lol
-Note: Accessible after the second-year part
-Oh, and to the idiots trying Seven Deadly Sins + Monstrosity, just stop. How can you beat that? lol I guarantee even the game developers can’t beat it.
-(Attachment: MonstrositysNestLocation.jpg)
As soon as I saw the strategy guide posted on the community, I immediately commented with trembling hands.
-I beat it.
I secretly hoped someone would acknowledge me.
But my comment, containing a month’s worth of effort, was heroically sacrificed, buried under countless ‘BS’ replies.
“…”
As those emotions resurface, an unknown motivation begins to well up.
Standing at the edge of the cliff, I immediately threw myself down.
Perhaps because it’s the residence of the massive Monstrosity.
The inside of the cave was large and spacious, and with luminous gems embedded throughout, visibility wasn’t an issue.
After walking for some time.
I began to sense a considerable amount of dark magic energy ahead.
‘The quest still isn’t appearing.’
In the game, the Monstrosity elimination quest notification would have appeared by now.
Seeing that no notifications have come so far, it seems this will also be a waste of time.
“Well, it was a creature I needed to kill anyway.”
I wasn’t disappointed. After all, the main reason I came all this way was because I wanted to swing my sword.
Thinking this, I slowly began to draw up my mana.
Deceive the Scale. Wrap acceleration and enhancement magic around my body.
I draw my two swords as I feel the dark magic energy gradually approaching.
Just around that corner, a giant black raven should be waiting.
“Whew.”
I took a deep breath, prepared to swing both swords immediately, and turned the corner.
Just as I was about to swing my swords.
I witnessed the Monstrosity’s shocking form and had to stop mid-swing.
“Chirp chirp!”
“…”
Cute little cries reach my ears.
For a moment, I was dumbfounded.
And for good reason. What I saw wasn’t a giant black raven, but a tiny baby bird no bigger than my palm.
“A blue bird?”
I didn’t think I was color blind.
Thinking this, I rubbed my eyes and looked ahead again, but.
“Chirp chirp!”
There was no transformation from blue to black.
Next, I saw something massive.
“Ah…”
The baby bird was desperately rubbing its body against that massive thing while chirping, and I had to swallow.
“Chirp chirp!”
That massive thing was the corpse of a giant black raven that had already passed away.
A dead giant raven, a crying baby bird.
‘It must have been its mother.’
As the situation became more or less clear, my mood began to sink.
Looking closely, tears were welling up in the eyes of the baby bird desperately rubbing against the body.
Strong dark magic energy emanates from the mother’s corpse.
Looking with my Penetrating Eye, various black magical formations are visible, inscribed all over the dead bird.
“Subjugation, brainwashing, confusion, tracking…”
I don’t know who cast them, but one thing was certain.
They had done every possible terrible thing they could.
“Chirp chirp!”
My gaze lowers. I see a small black magical formation inscribed on the baby bird’s chest.
“Ha.”
Confirming that the inscribed magic was tracking magic, I had to let out a deep sigh.
I couldn’t help it. I had come here largely to relieve stress, but instead of relieving it, I was feeling increasingly uncomfortable.
“So that’s why.”
The reason the Monstrosity followed the Chaos Church group in the game was because the Chaos Church had invested a lot of effort in that baby bird.
The reason gamers couldn’t access the “Monstrosity’s Nest” until they entered the second-year part was because during that time, the baby bird had to suffer terrible things from the Chaos Church.
“Chirp…”
Perhaps exhausted from crying? The baby bird buried itself in the corpse’s embrace and tried to close its eyes.
“What should I do with it.”
There are two choices I can make here.
The first option is to kill this baby bird that will become the Monstrosity if left alone.
By doing so, I can definitely prevent the Seven Deadly Sins from rampaging around the world riding the Monstrosity.
The second option is for me to take in and care for this baby bird.
This inevitably comes with risk. Because the Chaos Church will surely try to find the Monstrosity they lost.
And what if they happen to encounter me, a “Vessel of Sin”?
It was obvious. The Chaos Church would use every means to recover both me and the Monstrosity.
‘Cutting off the bud early is the best method, but…’
Seeing that pitiful sleeping figure, I just can’t bring myself to do it.
A safe but reluctant method,
A dangerous but peace-of-mind method.
After wavering between the two, I was finally able to make a decision, draw up my mana, and reach out my right hand towards the baby bird.
“Chirp…”
Did it sense my mana? The baby bird, waking from its brief sleep, blinked and looked at me.
I placed my hand on the baby bird’s chest.
“I’m sorry, but you.”
Saying this, I pulled my hand.
Then the black magical formation inscribed on the baby bird’s chest began to come along with my palm.
“You’ll have to come with me.”
I placed my palm on the mother bird’s chest, transferring the black magical formation there.
“Let’s go.”
Afterwards, I extended my palm to the baby bird, conveying my wish for it to ride on it.
“Chirp!”
Does it understand what I’m saying?
The baby bird hesitated for a moment, then climbed onto my palm.
“Kid.”
Although I didn’t relieve my stress.
‘If I raise it well, I might be able to ride it?’
Nevertheless, it wasn’t a bad feeling.
As I was about to turn around, savoring that feeling.
A notification appeared in mid-air after a long time.
[Hidden quest ‘Precious Blue Bird’ is now in progress.]
[You can obtain rewards upon meeting conditions.]
[Please give it a name.]
After checking the notification, I looked at the blue bird chirping on my shoulder for a moment.
“A name for a chirping blue bird…”
The baby bird’s name was decided in an instant.
I was on my way out with the baby bird ‘Tweet’ on my shoulder.
“W-What’s that?”
“W-Who are you?”
When I encountered two men wearing black robes.
“And who might you gentlemen be?”
I asked while examining their appearance.
“Ah, Chaos Church believers.”
I didn’t need to look closely.
Because I saw the markings clearly engraved on their foreheads.
So I.
“This guy— Gugh!”
“Kheuk!”
Without bothering to hear their answer, I swung my sword first.
Thud, thud.
Then I heard something falling to the ground.
I deliberately avoided looking in that direction and started walking again.
It was the moment I had finally achieved the purpose of coming here.
Black robes, markings engraved on foreheads.
And an ominous aura subtly perceptible.
They were certainly Chaos Church believers.
Worried they might be up to something, I had been secretly following them and watching, but.
“W-What?”
What the woman witnessed was the heads of those men soaring into the air after a single sword strike from a man who appeared to be her age.
