Chapter 30: I, the Geo Archon Morax with 2.1 Billion Mora, Have Joined a Chat Group [30]
"We've lost contact with Instructor Tsuruoka?"
"The target area has fallen into chaos!"
"The Committee is requesting immediate updates…"
"The audience at the Imperial Broadcast Hall in Toyama is waiting…"
"Deploy the stationed ground troops from the Ability User Base. Begin satellite imaging analysis…"
"Ability Response Team, stand by."
"And make sure Unit X is ready—Tsuruoka's pet project might finally be of use."
"Don't forget to inform the public. Incidents like this are great for ratings…"
"It's been over a decade since we've had an event like this."
"True, but during Instructor Tsuruoka's tenure, our nation hasn't had any major issues. In fact, we've expanded into several lucrative side ventures."
"Still, these so-called 'special ability beasts' are nothing but glorified high school dropouts. What can they possibly achieve? Hmph."
"Ensure we recover Instructor Tsuruoka—he's a valuable asset to the Committee."
"Understood, sir!"
---
The heavy thrum of helicopters filled the air as their rotor blades neared. Zhongli looked skyward, then shifted his gaze back to the ground. The rumble of armored vehicles' engines grew louder with each passing moment.
"Half an hour to respond," Zhongli mused aloud, glancing at Nana. "Is your military always this efficient?"
"Tch~~!" Accelerator scoffed, his hands buried in his pockets, a sly grin playing on his lips.
"Why even ask? Obviously, this was all pre-planned. They probably have a base stationed within three to five kilometers of here."
"In my world, where the tech is way ahead of this one, not even the mobile Anti-Skill units or the teleporting Judgment squads can respond this fast."
"If I'm right, this is just the appetizer. The main course is still out there."
"No!" Nana suddenly screamed, panic seizing her voice. "If they're responding this quickly, my classmates are in danger! Other than the immortal ones, no one else can withstand the military's weapons!"
Accelerator's sneer deepened, his tone laced with disdain.
"Your so-called ability users are weak as hell. Even their powers come with glaring weaknesses. Why would these normal people with modern weapons even be afraid of a revolt? It doesn't add up."
"Do you really think a handful of ability users could achieve anything? You're less than 0.0000001% of the population! What are you going to do, overthrow the world?"
"Unless one of you is on my level, which, surprise, you're not, it's ridiculous to think you'd ever be a threat. From what you've described, even a regular guy with a thousand-meter-range sniper rifle could pick you all off before you knew what hit you."
"W-What…?" Nana stammered, her mind a blank slate.
Her lips moved as though to argue, but no words came.
Every possible rebuttal felt illogical, even to her.
"And another thing," Accelerator continued, his voice dripping with contempt. "Your precious Committee talks about ability users evolving into something stronger, but have they ever shown you what that looks like? No records of it, right?"
"Why do you think that is? Maybe they're saving that 'experience' for you."
He spat to the side.
"Or maybe those so-called 'higher citizens' just enjoy the thrill of watching you slaughter each other."
"Think about it," he pressed on. "You said the military showed up the day after your friend died. How did they time that so perfectly? You don't find it suspicious that they're always watching you? Maybe even enjoying your killing sprees?"
His words struck Nana like a lightning bolt, shattering the mental walls she had built to shield herself from the truth.
She had never noticed these patterns before. Worse yet, she had never even considered them.
"I'm done here," Accelerator grumbled, stuffing his hands deeper into his pockets. "Think about it yourself, you idiot."
Without another word, he turned on his heel. With a light tap of his foot, a gust of wind enveloped him, carrying him toward the approaching helicopters.
Puri-Puri Prisoner sighed dramatically, his flamboyant demeanor softened by a note of genuine sympathy.
"Well, Zhongli-san, I'm off too. As for you, Nana-girl…" He paused, giving her a pointed look.
"You've done a lot of bad things. It's time to reflect on them. From now on, you'll be living with the weight of those responsibilities, for the rest of your life."
His massive form broke into a run, each step shaking the already fractured ground beneath him.
Dust and debris exploded into the air as he charged, the sheer force of his movement eclipsing even the rumble of the distant armored vehicles.
Like a human battering ram, he barreled toward the oncoming tanks.
Zhongli, however, remained seated. Calmly sipping his tea, he addressed Nana with measured precision.
"If I were to reverse time and resurrect your classmates, it would take approximately a month. During that time, I would be unable to move, as the process requires my full concentration."
He placed his teacup down.
"However, the living must also be saved. Therefore…"
Severing another finger, Zhongli tossed it forward. A shimmering image of himself materialized nearby—a perfect replica.
"This avatar will accompany you," Zhongli explained. "It has only a fraction of my power, so you must exercise caution."
Nana stood frozen, staring at Zhongli's composed, almost otherworldly visage. Finally, she lowered herself into a deep bow, her voice trembling with gratitude.
"You've said before that you only act through contracts—that everything must be fair. But no matter how I think about it, I have nothing of equal value to offer you."
"If you ask for my life, or for me to do anything, I'll gladly comply. Even if it means suffering in hell for a thousand years, repenting daily, I'll accept it."
"Thank you. Thank you so much!"
Zhongli tapped a slender, pale finger against the stone table, his golden gaze focused on the ripples in his tea.
"There is no need for such worry," he said, his lips curling into a faint smile. "Your share of the contract's cost has already been received. It is a fair exchange."
Though Nana didn't understand what she could possibly offer, her heart felt lighter.
"Thank you, Mr. Zhongli. I'll never forget this."
She turned, determination alight in her tear-streaked eyes.
"I'm going now."
"Good luck," Zhongli said, his voice calm as ever. "Now… let's resolve what's right in front of us."
The sound of helicopter blades and roaring engines grew deafening as the battlefield loomed ahead.
