Chapter 40 Battle on the Lake_2
"Alright, these are the more official ways of saying it, geared for accuracy but a bit dull. The students of Yuanting Academy are often referred to as 'Bird Tamers' in the federal breeding circles, known for commanding thousands of birds."
"However, due to the decline of the Yuanting clan, this title has also lost much of its luster in the past hundred years."
As the two of them spoke, they arrived at the lakeside. Hexia chased three ducklings into the water, letting them swim on their own and try to catch prey, while she sat on the shore fishing and continued chatting with Agnes. It was then that they overheard a conversation between two senior students approaching from a distance, drawing their attention.
"It's been a long time since we've sparred, Terry," said a tall, skinny boy wearing a black coat and long pants, with a white shirt underneath.
"Hehe, are your hands itching? o(* ̄︶ ̄*)o."
The boy opposite him was dressed similarly, but had a considerably plumper figure.
"Cut the chatter, let's have a match today."
"No problem, but I'll need to wait a little for my Great Pond Goose to return," the chubby student waved his hand.
"Fine."
The two then advanced toward the lake, seemingly planning to duel over the water. Just as Hexia and Agnes were considering whether to avoid them, a flapping sound came from above their heads.
"Alright, my Great Pond Goose has arrived. What about yours?" The chubby boy patted the pelican almost as tall as himself, its feathers primarily white but with grey edges on its wings, indicating it was likely a variant of a Transcendent animal.
"That's easy," the tall, skinny boy said as he took out a whistle and blew it. Five black dots plummeted from the sky, then flapped their wings to hover behind him.
Slashing Blade Sequence 4 · Black-and-White Crested Myrna. The birds had soft black heads and backs, but their bellies and the undersides of their wings were snowy white, with lively black eyes.
Unlike the average Transcendent fighter, Breeders always adhered to the principle of outnumbering their enemies, just like High-Rank Transcendents can enhance their power with various weapons and equipment, Breeders often cultivate multiple Transcendent animals as their assistants.
Still in high school, yet owning five Slashing Blade Sequence 4 animal companions, this boy was indeed one of the top-performing students at Yuanting Academy, no wonder he was so confident earlier.
"You're not telling me that all year you've just bred this one Great Pond Goose, are you?" The opposer teased, looking unimpressed at the chubby student.
"Hehe, you'll find out soon enough." Unperturbed, the chubby student merely replied as their Crested Myrnas and Great Pond Goose took to the skies above the lake. After some preparation, the battle commenced.
Compared to the larger Great Pond Goose, the five Crested Myrnas were incredibly agile. Their "Flight" Skill rating could possibly be Lv.5 or above. Initially, they did not swarm in but split up, with two attacking as a test while the other three circled around, waiting for an opportunity.
Two black-and-white figures swept rapidly across the surface of the lake, and like scissors, they crossed paths in an attack on the Great Pond Goose. The edges of their wings shimmered with a faint light, razor-sharp.
In sharp cutting, the Slashing Blade Sequence had always excelled, and the efficiency of Magic Power conversion to attack in this Sequence was also extremely high. A full-power Slashing Blade Sequence 4, even a Sequence 5 Transcendent of another breed, would have to avoid its edge. However, it had its drawbacks: despite the high Magic Power efficiency, its approach was very singular, and without assistance, it could easily be caught in a predicament.
The two Crested Myrnas' cutting crossed past the Great Pond Goose, lifting a great number of feathers and even drawing traces of blood. Although the Great Pond Goose remained stable in flight, it was clearly at a disadvantage.
Puzzled by this, the tall, lanky boy shook his head slightly and gestured again. The two Crested Myrnas turned back for another dive, turning into two intersecting grey lines from the sky.
Compared to his opponent's leisurely demeanor, the chubby boy became more focused, watching closely as the Crested Myrnas plummeted from the sky, and just as the two sides neared each other, he suddenly shouted.
"Open your mouth!"
The Great Pond Goose opened its wide beak as far as it could, unleashing an invisible sonic wave. Even Hexia and Agnes, who were relatively distant, felt a sudden tightness in their chests, struggling to breathe. The two Crested Myrnas flying fast through the sky faced the direct impact up close, veering off course and missing the Great Pond Goose before splashing into the water.
Taking advantage of the two Crested Myrnas falling into the water, the Great Pond Goose dived in as well. Using both wings and feet, it pursued the underwater birds and quickly gulped down one, with the other one in imminent danger.
Unlike the Great Pond Goose, which was accustomed to water, the Crested Myrnas were birds of the forest and high mountains, not adept at water fighting. Once their feathers were soaked in the water, their speed and agility plummeted. Despite struggling, it was eventually swallowed by the Great Pond Goose.
With a wobbling gullet, the Great Pond Goose continued to struggle with the two Crested Myrnas inside. It was only after a while that, at the chubby boy's command, the goose opened its beak to release the two birds.
"Hmph." The tall boy sneered coldly, signaling for the two Crested Myrnas to land beside him and bow out. He continued to direct the remaining three birds.
Learning from the previous lesson, the three Crested Myrnas became much more cautious. They still alternated attacks on the Great Pond Goose but didn't swarm it all at once and deliberately avoided certain angles to prevent falling into the water.
Even if a Crested Myrna was stunned by the Great Pond Goose's sonic wave, its companions would immediately intervene, delivering heavy slashes to the head of the goose to prevent it from easily catching a teammate, and then counterattacking.
