Chapter 84: Chapter 84: Han Yu’s Proposal
Captain America was eagerly testing his shield, now enchanted with a loyalty spell. Even with his usually composed demeanor, he resembled an excited boy playing with his newly beloved toy, marveling at the vibranium shield that could now fly back to him.
Stark and Fury were left speechless by this display. Initially, they assumed the process would take ages—perhaps ten days or even half a month. But to their astonishment, it was all done in less than ten minutes!
"By the way, what does the Level 3 Thorns enchantment do?" Captain America suddenly remembered the additional enchantment and turned to Han Yu for clarification.
"Hmm, why don't you ask Director Fury to help you test it out?" Han Yu stroked his chin, a mischievous glint flashing in his eyes.
"Me?" Nick Fury pointed at himself. "Isn't this a passive ability?"
"Here, give Captain America's shield a good whack, but don't use too much force," Han Yu suggested, handing Fury a stick he had seemingly produced out of nowhere. Clearly, he wanted to give the idle Fury something to do.
Taking the stick, Fury cast a suspicious glance at Han Yu. But seeing the innocent smile on his face, Fury doubted there was any malice involved. Without further hesitation, he gripped the stick with both hands and struck Captain America's shield hard.
The moment the stick collided with the shield, Fury's expression turned crimson. A sudden, sharp pain coursed through his body, causing his hands to tremble. As the stick fell to the ground with a clatter, Fury let out a yelp of pain.
"What just happened? It felt like someone hit me with a stick!" Fury gasped, his face contorted with discomfort.
Han Yu suppressed a smile. "Ah... that's the effect of the Thorns enchantment. If someone attacks the shield, it reflects 45% of the damage back to the attacker. It's an excellent countermeasure in the face of multiple enemies."
"Are you serious?"
All three of them were stunned by this revelation. The ability to reflect damage? That was insanely powerful! If someone were to unleash a barrage of bullets on Captain America, the shooters could very well end up killing themselves before even reaching him.
Hearing the explanation, Captain America became even more attached to his shield. He had never felt such a deep sense of affection for this trusted companion.
"Steve, stop playing with it. We've got more serious matters to discuss," Fury said, exhaling deeply as the pain subsided. He couldn't blame Captain America for being so excited—after all, this shield had been with him for the longest time.
"More matters?" Han Yu raised an eyebrow. He had assumed this was their only agenda. Could it be that Stark also wanted to upgrade his equipment?
Thinking this, Han Yu turned to Stark, who immediately shook his head, looking innocent and signaling that he had nothing to do with it.
Fury spoke up, "We'd like to hire you as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s equipment support. You name your price."
Hearing this, Han Yu's face remained expressionless. He sighed softly and said, "Supporting S.H.I.E.L.D.? That's just helping people get into trouble."
"Why do you say that? We're the good guys," Fury said, clearly puzzled.
"The good guys? S.H.I.E.L.D. has already lost its way. There are things happening within your organization that even you, the director, aren't aware of," Han Yu said with a wry smile and a shake of his head.
"What could possibly be happening in S.H.I.E.L.D. that I don't know about?" Fury asked indignantly. As the director, he had the highest level of clearance. How could there be anything hidden from him?
"Well then, as an exchange, give me the highest clearance in S.H.I.E.L.D., and I'll tell you," Han Yu said with a faint smile.
"The highest clearance? Are you dreaming?" Fury chuckled in disbelief. This was the first time someone had ever suggested trading S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top clearance for anything.
"I'm not insisting," Han Yu said nonchalantly. "If you don't agree, that's fine. But if you do, S.H.I.E.L.D. might actually be useful to me. If it's on the brink of collapse, I'd step in to save it. Otherwise, whether it survives or not has nothing to do with me."
Han Yu smirked nonchalantly. He wanted S.H.I.E.L.D.'s highest clearance to use its satellites to locate mutants worldwide—a critical step in initiating his mutant sanctuary project.
If he couldn't get it, so be it. Han Yu wasn't about to force the issue. He could always spend some money and have Ultron build a satellite for him.
After all, Han Yu could carry the satellite himself, fly it into orbit, and place it near Earth, saving even the launch costs.
"S.H.I.E.L.D. will collapse? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard," Nick Fury retorted, his voice tinged with sarcasm.
To Fury, Han Yu now seemed like an unscrupulous and unreasonable businessman. Even someone as composed as Fury couldn't help but sound snide at this point.
"If you don't believe me, feel free to leave," Han Yu replied calmly, ignoring Fury's tone. He gestured toward the door, inviting them to leave.
"You... Wait a moment. Han, how about this? If your information turns out to be valuable, I'll personally ensure you get S.H.I.E.L.D.'s highest clearance. I won't go back on my word. What do you say?"
It was Captain America who stepped forward to mediate. In his experience, Han Yu had always been easy to talk to. Back at a previous banquet, they'd had a pleasant chat, and Han Yu had been nothing but friendly.
More importantly, Steve didn't believe Han Yu would fabricate a lie just to gain S.H.I.E.L.D.'s clearance. With Han Yu's abilities, there was simply no need for such tactics.
After receiving the enhanced vibranium shield, Captain America was convinced that Han Yu could easily storm into the homes of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s leadership and forcibly obtain the clearance if he wanted to.
The fact that Han Yu was offering an exchange instead showed that he wasn't a brute. He didn't want to forcefully alter S.H.I.E.L.D. or its structure.
"Fine. For the Captain's sake, I'll agree," Han Yu finally relented.
He trusted Captain America's integrity. Steve's unwavering commitment to justice was what made him Captain America in the first place. Kindness and honesty had always been at the core of his character.
Without those traits, Steve might have strayed long ago, especially after Dr. Erskine, the scientist who believed in him and chose him for the Super Soldier Program, had passed away.
"Earlier, Mr. Fury mentioned a mission you're undertaking in a few days. Actually, it's tonight, isn't it? You're heading to a mobile satellite launch platform. I believe it's called... The Lemurian Star?" Han Yu said, pausing for a moment as if recalling the name.
"You hacked our system?" Fury's expression darkened even further, his tone sharp. Han Yu's information was spot on.
The mission was indeed scheduled for tonight. Fury had planned to upgrade Captain America's equipment beforehand but hadn't yet briefed him on the details.
For Han Yu to know, he must have accessed the information through some means. To Fury, the most plausible explanation was that Han Yu had hacked into S.H.I.E.L.D.'s database.
