Chapter 103: Chapter 103: The Former Magneto
At home, Erik stared at his phone, utterly baffled. He'd heard Charles loud and clear, but he hadn't even been given the chance to ask what was going on. This wasn't like the Charles he knew. Still, his friend sounded urgent, so Erik decided to get up, freshen himself up, and head to the school.
Meanwhile, back in the room, Han Yu looked at Charles, who had just hung up the phone. "You've known each other for a long time?" he asked.
"Yeah, we went to the same school from high school through college. Now we've ended up teaching at the same school again. Pretty coincidental, huh?" Charles replied with a chuckle.
Han Yu rubbed his forehead with a sigh. At least things hadn't veered into a worse direction. It seemed the changes caused by the Flashpoint Paradox weren't all bad.
While waiting, the conversation between Han Yu and Charles became even more animated. Now that their mutant identities were out in the open, they delved deeper into discussions about mutants, as if there was no end to the topic. Much of the focus remained on exploring Charles's abilities.
"Oh, right. What's your ability? Can you show me?" Charles asked curiously. He'd been the one demonstrating his powers so far, and he was eager to see what Han Yu could do.
The question caught Han Yu off guard. Strictly speaking, he didn't have a signature superpower. If he mentioned the Green Lantern ring, it was technically a tool, not an innate ability. Apart from the Immortal Seal, which offered little offensive capability, his heightened mental strength granted him abilities like mental communication, deterrence, and defense.
Mental deterrence could harm ordinary humans, but against mutants with strong psychic powers or deities, his abilities were mostly defensive, preventing himself from being mentally overpowered. They lacked real destructive force.
"My abilities are a bit different from yours. You could call them… spatial manipulation and weapon-based powers?" Han Yu said, casually making up terms.
With a flick of his hands, a black-glowing Haotian Hammer appeared in one hand, and the icy Hyorinmaru materialized in the other.
The room's temperature immediately plummeted. On this scorching day, the sudden chill caused thin layers of frost to form on the walls.
Charles instinctively tried to rub his hands together for warmth, but he quickly realized his movements had slowed. His eyes shifted to the Haotian Hammer, drawn to its faint but undeniable pressure.
Even Charles could feel the oppressive aura emanating from the hammer, which explained his sluggishness.
Seeing Charles struggle, Han Yu quickly dismissed the weapons. Though Charles was a mutant, his physical body was still that of an ordinary human and couldn't handle the pressure of these weapons.
Once the weapons were gone, Charles let out a long breath, visibly relieved.
"Sorry about that," Han Yu said with an apologetic smile.
"It's fine. I asked to see it. But wow, those are incredible! Just summoning a sword and hammer caused such an effect. I can't imagine anyone standing a chance against you in a real fight," Charles said, inspecting the frosty walls in astonishment.
Han Yu merely smiled, not bothering to elaborate. There would undoubtedly be opportunities for Charles to witness his abilities in action someday.
About twenty minutes later, a figure burst into the room, slightly out of breath. The man's gaze immediately locked onto Charles before darting to a slightly bent spoon on the table. His expression changed as he hurried forward, pulling Charles behind him protectively.
"Are you okay? Did he hurt you?"
The man was none other than Erik, the "former" Magneto. At that moment, he carefully inspected Charles, as if fearing Han Yu had harmed him.
"I'm fine! Why would anything be wrong?" Charles replied, utterly confused.
Erik cast a wary glance at Han Yu, then at the bent spoon on the table. Lowering his voice, he asked Charles, "Did you use your powers just now? I told you not to use them in front of strangers! What if it causes trouble?"
His tone carried a trace of anger, though it was clearly fueled by concern for Charles's safety and the potential dangers of exposing his mutant abilities.
Han Yu couldn't help but find the scene amusing. The brotherly bond between the two was far deeper than he'd anticipated. It seemed that, in this world, Erik hadn't suffered under the Nazis. Otherwise, he wouldn't have ended up as Charles's colleague.
Hearing the worry in Erik's angry tone, Charles stepped between the two men. "Let me introduce you. This is Han Yu, from New York. He's also a mutant."
"Another mutant?" Erik eyed Han Yu skeptically, clearly not believing it.
Han Yu shrugged and didn't elaborate. Instead, he pulled out the Haotian Hammer and Hyorinmaru from his system space right in front of Erik, flashing them before putting them back. That was enough to convince Erik.
"You mutants and your talks—why do you need me? Don't tell me you want to use me as target practice. I might be a gym teacher, but I'm no punching bag," Erik said, taking a few steps back.
Han Yu couldn't help but laugh. Where had the cold, aloof Magneto from his past life gone?
"No, Han just told me you might be a mutant too!" Charles said.
"Me? That's impossible," Erik replied, shaking his head. "I've never shown any signs of being a mutant. Haven't we already tested this?"
Charles thought for a moment. "Well, that's true."
Charles looked at Han Yu, silently asking what to do next.
Charles's abilities had manifested early, and back then, Erik had tried to see if he had any powers too. They had tried everything—cold baths, jumping off three-story buildings, and even slapping themselves hard—but nothing worked.
While Charles hadn't been seen as a freak, Erik had been considered one by others because his actions were so unusual.
Han Yu opened the X-System on his phone and explained, "This software can detect mutants. Right now, it's in direct detection mode. If the person is a mutant, the light will turn red. If it's white, they're not a mutant. Let's test it outside."
The three of them walked out of the room. It was already after class, so the café was filled with students. Han Yu tried the software on a few people. All of them showed white, but when it was pointed at Charles, it lit up red.
"See? It's real."
Han Yu tested it again, switching between Charles and a regular student to confirm it was accurate. Once satisfied, the three of them returned to the room.
"Are you ready? I want to tell you that Charles and I plan to start a school for mutants. If the test shows you're a mutant, I hope you'll join us and help take care of the school with Charles. Of course, if you don't want to, we won't test you. Your abilities won't awaken on their own if you don't want to activate them."
Han Yu said seriously. Once they walked down this path, it meant they were no longer ordinary people, and the events ahead would drastically change their lives.
At that moment, Charles didn't say anything about wanting Erik to join. He had already awakened his powers and knew well that anyone with abilities like his was no longer the same as regular humans.
He understood that the road ahead might be dangerous. Erik was his friend, and if Erik could lend a hand, that would be great. However, if Erik wasn't willing to take this step, Charles would never force him. This was Erik's life, and Charles had no right to change that.
Both Han Yu and Charles silently waited, watching Erik. Erik didn't respond immediately, instead thinking it over carefully. Finally, he placed his hand on Charles's head and smiled.
"Of course, I'm in! How could this bookworm, who can't even win a fight, survive without me?"
