Chapter 102: Chapter 102: The Flashpoint Paradox
In Han Yu's memory, Charles was Professor X, the most powerful telepath. Yet now, it seemed his ability was to control magnetic fields—a power belonging to Magneto, Erik Lehnsherr!
Han Yu clasped his fingers together under his chin, his expression tense. Suddenly, a phrase popped into his mind: "Damn it, the Flashpoint Paradox!"
The so-called Flashpoint Paradox is a concept from the DC Universe. In it, when the Flash alters a past event through time travel, it creates a series of butterfly effects that change the future, resulting in a new timeline. This phenomenon is known as the Flashpoint Paradox.
Han Yu had initially thought his presence in this world might at most accelerate or delay the timeline of certain events. But now, it seemed his arrival had caused something far more profound—it had triggered a Flashpoint Paradox.
In a world influenced by the Flashpoint Paradox, everything diverges from the original path. Heroes can turn into villains of the worst kind, while villains can transform into virtuous individuals.
"I can't even begin to guess how many things this paradox has impacted. It looks like I'll have to help guide events along to prevent uncontrollable chaos," Han Yu mused, stroking his chin.
In his past life, anything involving the Flash inevitably included time-line disruptions. Those speedsters seemed to delight in toying with time, constantly darting back and forth, reshaping the world.
Never did Han Yu imagine that his own arrival would lead to something so similar. Truly, it was a case of "living long enough to see it all."
"Mr. Han, are… you okay?"
Charles, sensing Han Yu's prolonged silence, worried that his display of superpowers had overwhelmed him.
"I'm fine. Let me be direct." Han Yu's eyes gleamed as he asked, "If there are more mutants in this world, and humans refuse to accept them—hunting them down instead—what would you do?"
Han Yu's gaze sharpened. In his memories, Magneto had always been a villain, even though he occasionally worked with Professor X. Still, Magneto's overall role leaned heavily toward the antagonist. Now, he was curious to see how a Charles possessing Magneto's powers would respond.
It was a loaded question, testing Charles' values and resolve. For Charles, this was the first time anyone had ever posed such a question, and it left him momentarily speechless.
Han Yu waited patiently, refraining from interrupting. He was prepared to act. If Charles harbored dangerous thoughts, Han Yu would use his psychic powers to create a mental prison within Charles' mind.
It wouldn't kill him, but it would seal his abilities, making him forget he ever had powers. Han Yu was acutely aware of just how far this kind of ability could evolve.
Mutants are categorized into five levels, with Level Five being the highest—Omega level. Among the vast mutant population, there were only a handful of Omega-level mutants. Magneto's powers reached Level Four. Though not the highest, they were terrifyingly formidable, capable of moving planets.
Such power placed Magneto among the monarchs of the mutant world, a figure of awe and dread alike.
After five minutes of contemplation, Charles sighed deeply and finally answered, "If that day ever comes, I would take the mutants I know and hide. I'd try to keep us from being discovered by ordinary humans. To be honest, I've spent years searching for other mutants, but I haven't found a single one."
Charles' response brought a smile to Han Yu's face. Thankfully, despite the change in powers, Charles remained as kind-hearted as Han Yu remembered. This realization brought a wave of relief.
Magneto, Erik, and Professor X, Charles, were crucial individuals Han Yu needed to locate. In his memory, these two had established the mutant academy and worked to aid their kind.
Even though Erik's methods later became extreme—seeking to exterminate humans to protect mutants—Han Yu understood the reasons behind it.
Erik's hatred for humans stemmed from the trauma of his childhood, where he suffered under Nazi persecution and exploitation for years. He already harbored a deep resentment toward ordinary humans. Witnessing his "fellow mutants" being hunted and killed only drove him further down the path of vengeance.
"Great, that's exactly why I've come to find you this time," Han Yu said with a firm tone. "I'm planning to establish an academy specifically for mutants from all over the world. I hope you'll join and become a teacher there. Not all mutants have your perspective or family background. For many of them, their families and friends only see them as monsters."
"Excessive rejection can distort their minds, leading to tragedies that are hard to resolve. That's why I want to gather them together and have experienced individuals like you guide them—to teach them how to control their powers."
Han Yu's words struck a chord deep within Charles. It reminded him of why he had chosen to remain a schoolteacher instead of accepting high-paying offers from research companies. Over the years, he had come to realize that mutant genes often manifest in childhood, rather than suddenly appearing later in life.
Charles had stayed at the school to observe students, identifying those who might show signs of being mutants, so he could protect them from external harm early on.
But Charles knew his efforts were limited. At best, he could only monitor the students within Berlin. Beyond that, he was powerless.
"What do you plan to do?" Charles asked.
Han Yu replied, "I've developed software capable of detecting mutants on a large scale. I'll give it to you. Once we find one more key individual, I'll leave the rest of the work to the two of you. The only problem is, I have no idea where to find this person. His abilities seem to be dormant, and I'm not even certain he's a mutant."
Charles raised an eyebrow. "Who's the other person? What's his name?"
"Erik. Erik Lehnsherr. He's likely a powerful mutant as well, but where in this vast world am I supposed to find him?"
Han Yu sighed, visibly troubled. To his surprise, Charles slowly raised his hand, his expression turning peculiar. "Erik? He's our school's gym teacher. I'm actually pretty close to him. He's the only person who knows I'm a mutant."
Han Yu: "???"
Is this even possible? In the movies, you're best friends, and now in reality, you're still best friends? Truly, fate works in mysterious ways.
"That's fantastic! Where is he now? Let's go find him," Han Yu said eagerly. He knew Erik couldn't be at the school at the moment, otherwise, the X-System would have detected his mutant gene.
"He's probably at home. Hang on, I'll call him and ask him to come over," Charles replied.
Without wasting a moment, Charles pulled out his phone. His expression carried a mix of excitement and nervousness. For over twenty years, Erik had been the one constant source of comfort, assuring Charles he wasn't a freak for being a mutant.
Now, hearing that Erik might also be a mutant was thrilling. If he could convince Erik to join, Charles would feel even more motivated in this mission.
The phone rang several times before a deep, magnetic voice came through. "What is it, Charles? I'm trying to sleep."
"Sleeping in the middle of the day? Stop skipping school when you don't have classes. Something urgent has come up. Be here in half an hour, and don't be late!"
Before Erik could protest, Charles hung up abruptly, leaving no room for refusal.
